Lake Puckaway, Wi. Walleye Report March 15th 2012

We were out the last 4 days chasing walleyes on the Fox river just above Lake Puckaway, Wi. Lake Puckaway is located between the towns of Montello and Princeton. Both towns are located on the Fox river. Lake Puckaway is a shallow lake which is a widening of the Fox river system. The lake is located about 75 miles north of our capital city of Madison.

I was out 2 days with my folks June and Henry which live about 25 miles south of the lake. Mom and Dad are in their 80,s so it,s always great to get them out when I can for a day in the boat. Both days fishing with them we had over 30 walleyes in the boat each day.

The tactics were using were very simple set ups for the days. One of my favorite ways is to drift with the current and drag 1/32nd to 1/8th once jigs tipped with fat head minnows or night crawlers. For the crawlers we are just using a half of one to keep from getting bit off all the time. Also for the monnows just large fat heads work the best. Colors for the jigs are orange, red, purple, blue and the two tone jigs seemed be the hot ones for the day. We also drift with a split shot rig with colored hooks and beads tipped with the same bait as well.

The key for both days was to watch the depth finder for the suttle drop off to the main channel of deeper water. These fish are spawning and most of them are laying on the top of the drop off spawning in the warmer water. Some of the fish we were getting were as shallow as 3 to 4 feet of water. Lots of the males were milking or all ready milked out that we were catching. Some of the females were getting close to dropping their eggs with water temps up in the 50,s all ready for March is very unusual for this time of the year. But with not too cold of a winter and not much snow fall things really warmed up fast.
