Our morning started very early the other day with the alarm sounding at 3 am. After arriving at the hotel around 4:30am to pick up fishing clients we began to make our way to the Bay. Having very short windows of fish catching opportunities it is very important to get on the ice early in the dark to drill holes and get in position to jig for Walleyes.
At this time of the season our morning window of opportunity is from around 5:45am till around 8 am or so. We dont get a lot of bites out here but the bites we do get generally are pretty nice fish with the opportunity for a true trophy Walleye with any bite. We typically always jig with either a jig and minnow, jigging rapalas, and jigging shad raps.
Our first fish came shortly before 6am which was a 22 inch fish. Not too long after that I hooked a fish which came unbuttoned. Not too much longer I hooked another fish that went around 5 pounds. I put a new minnow on sent my jig down and was bit again this time a bigger fish which was around a 7 or 8 pound fish which came off at the hole.
A few minutes later a yell came from next to me fish on and when I got over there we landed a very nice fish which again went around 7 or 8 pounds. We landed another smaller male shortly after that fish was caught. We were just about at the end of our window that morning when I got bit one more time which was a big fat 30 inch fish which really made our morning and day for that.

Congrats on those awesome fish, all I can say is wow!!
Someday I hope I get the chance to Ice my own 30″.
Fishing Mille Lacs I’ve pulled up a 27″ that looked like a 30″ down the hole…Lol.
I’ll keep putting my time in.
Nice fish!!!!!
Nice fish
Awesome fish Paul! Are you targeting these fish in shallower water? What makes me ask is the bite window in which you described, it really reminds me of the walleyes i fish in 6 to 15 feet of water.

A 30 through the ice made your morning or day? That would make most anglers season or decade! Congrats on staying on them, sounds like a great bite is going on out there right now if you know where and when to be.
Thanks,
Joel
