With the warm weather the past few days and the ice conditions getting worse by the day. I decided that I needed to get out on the ice one last time! Fiday we had temperatures in the 50’s with very light winds. Which made for a great day to be on the ice for some jumbo Mille Lacs Lake perch!
Randy McGrovern and [censored] Robertson made this trip with myself out on the eastside near Hunters Point. We fished some mud area’s around 30 feet deep. Jigging with the help of a under water camera was the ticket. The camera allowed you to pull your lure away from the smaller perch. The perch were hitting small jigging spoons with just a minnow head. The color that worked best for me was a gold colored weseal jigged on the bottom. We ended the day with a nice bunch of perch with the two biggest ones that I am holding above. They both weighed a tad over 1.25lbs each! Nice jumbos……..
The ice depth varied in many areas. One hole that you would drill might take the auger down too the motor and the next might be only 24 inches. The ice is getting vary soft on top from the warm sunshine. The shore line on the eastside is also melting away.
This morning Hook and I went out for only a few hours to see if we could get into some early morning perch. the bite was slow and we ended the day at 10am with just 5 keepers. The shoreline was pretty soft when we got in today. I drove some on the bottom with my ATV getting off the ice and on to shore. This will be my last trip on the ice for this season. It’s time to eat up these perch and get ready for the walleye opener in May!
Sad to hear it end up there Bobber, but I can really use some open water. Nice perch.
