Black Friday Fishing on Pool 7

Our family spent Turkey day at my brothers in LaCrosse Wi and decided we would spend the night so the girls could get a full days shopping in.. Now I have no desire to get that close and personal with that may shoppers, so my future son in law Josh and I decided to hook up with a good friend Tom Donaldson and do some wingdam fishing.

With the high winds we needed to go to a heavier jig, like the 1/4oz Precision Jig by BfishN Tackle. Water clarity was real good so the more natural colors were putting more fish in the boat.. Fire Cracker, Purple Cracker, Pro Blue and Purple were all catching fish.. The 4" Ringworm and the newer Moxi were the plastics that the smallies were looking to feed on…

These fish were scattered all around the many wingdams we fished today..We found them right on the face, all the way out 10 to 20 feet in front. I was swimming the jig and ringworm just up off the bottom. Using the current flow to assist in the action, I would cast several feet up in front of the wingdam and let the current sweep the bait into the fish.

Tom took us up the the dam and we caught several saugers in the 12 to 14 inch range..the 1/4 oz jigs and either the ringworms, moxie or paddle tail all caught fish.. I think finding the bottom and just hovering the offering a couple inches up was the ticket… I wish we would have had some superdoos… Tom and I were talking about the days we would get to the dam and put the hurt on the walleyes and saugers on this deadly bait..they are rarely talked about.. not sure if most fishermen are keeping this plastic under their hats or if it is just one of those baits that has been passed by…

Thanks Tom !!! We never had to bring a thing this day.. All gear was provided… You are a great friend !!

  1. Way to go Dave! Nice of you to put Tom on fish again! LOL!

    That’s a nice release shot.

You are so correct about the Super-doo’s. I remember the first time I saw one and said to myself “what kind of walleye would bite on that bass bait?”

Ol’ Rivereye’s himself gave me instructions on how to fish them. Drop to the bottom and raise about 6″ and hold as steady as possible while counting to 15. If a person held steady enough…WHACK! Fish ON!

    Fantastic cold water bait!

I really wish I would have gone fishing today.

  2. Great report Dave! I had a fantastic time and I’m glad the Smallies got the memo I sent out earlier in the week about You, Me & Josh fishing the river.

Anytime you and Josh want to hit the water, just let me know. It was my pleasure to have you guys along with me in the boat.

One of these times we’ll find some Walleyes…..
