Friday afternoon a few of us headed to Red, and again the fish were nothing but short of spectacular. We hit the lake out of the Southend at Rogers Resort and headed to the first pressure ridge to the left. It was out about one mile and as we drilled the first hole it showed life on the Vexilar. Alex Skelly, who was the young man on are trip didn’t take long to find the first 15 inch crappie of the day. Here is a picture with Alex and his Grandpa Wes, with a few of the bigger ones they caught on this outing.
The bite showed us that the school size is pretty small right now as most of the fish were traveling the ridge and we would see a few fish every few minutes and catch 3-5 per school. It was a day bite for us and the rest of the anglers that were set up along this small pressure ridge. The second pic is of Bob Heig of Bowens Lodge, great job on those slabs Bob.
The ice conditions were still driveable as of Friday afternoon, but with the warm weather and rain, it is foot traffic or ATV’s from here on out. Most of the crappies liked the looks of a green glow Demon tipped with a large Chub. It has been another great year up on Red and this will be my last report until we hit the open water, which shouldn’t be to long. If you really want to see some consistantly huge crappies, now until ice out is some of the best fishing on Red.
Nice report Sean. Them Crappies making my mouth water.
Great report! How much ice is there would you say?
Well the last two nights have firmed up the access again, but the forcast is not looking favorable for keeping the ice driveable. I would say as of Friday there was 30 inches yet. There is still plenty of opportunity to get out there, but one may have to take the sleds or wheelers. The best fishing of the year is happening right now. We asgain were out and to the left of Rogers and it sure seemed like everyone out there was catching fish.
Nice report Sean. I went out of Mort’s Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights. We did well all three nights, the bite started up around 7:30. Most of the water that was standing on the ice went under on Sunday morning. Driving out on the ice was nice and smooth on Sunday. West Wind closed access to trucks on Saturday, as far as I know Mort’s is still allowing trucks.
