The Walleyes still aren’t in the river the way we’d like to see them, but it’s still a bit warm. With this cold weather rolling through our area right now, this should start the last of the Shiners to run, which will bring those Walleyes that are packing up just outside the Gaps (Morris & Lighthouse). There are still some Walleyes to be had in the Rainy though…Wheelers Point, Wabanica (The Church), Winter Road River and the Baudette Airport, or at least that’s where the Wigwam Fisherman and Jody nabbed a few this past weekend while fishing the Chili Bowl Fishing Contest at Borderview. It’s only a matter of time till the river bite is on in full force, we’ll keep you updated.
Happy Fishing to all, and to all a good day!
Wigwam Fisherman
My 15 seconds of internet fame! (That is me in the photo with my personal best walleye!)
Thank you to the Wigwam Resort Staff and the Wigwam Fisherman for all of your help.
Our crew put the smack down on some quality fish over the weekend. We brought over 100 fish into the boat on Saturday, the biggest is in the photo, also had several slot fish up to 25″. Sunday we pulled in about 40 in the half day we were out.
Already plotting to see when I can make it up there again. Hopefully it will be a little less breezy for my next adventure.
Congrats on the pig walleye. In the river, out in the lake? Jigs and shiners? I’m thinking about a trip up there next week so anything you can share will be most appreciated.
Our tried and true technique for finding fish on Lake of the Woods is to have breakfast at the Wigwam and to chat with J.P. or Tom before hitting the lake. Have always received great advice and some darn good breakfast as well. (Honestly, just wanting to give credit where credit is due)
Due to the winds over the weekend it was pretty much impossible to get out to the gaps. We trailered the boat over to Zippel Bay State Park and launched from there. We caught most of our bigger fish in about 30′ with gold disco ball jigs with frozen shiners. We also did fairly well in about 24′ but the average size was smaller. Did try a few different jigs and color combos but gold was by far the most productive (surprise, surprise).
I hear ya’ loud and clear. The first thing I did was send JP a message asking him to keep me posted on those fish as they start to come into the river. And I thank you for the info on the Zipple Bay fish.
