After a heads up on an area from great friend Chad of a good quality Gill bite early in the week, Sunday wasn’t going to get here soon enough! Then seeing Bobbyw5’s report on Pool 8, well….. My mouth stared to water with the thought of a fish fry. I prayed the bite would still be happening on arrival. After making a call to Blue Fleck, there was another hoping the bite would last too But no matter we both would agree that the time going to be spent in the boat together would be fun regardless
The 14ft V-haul floater was loaded up with my 4 rods and Tom’s 82 Along with more tackle than a person should own. Funny thing is though……a person only needs a few jigs, Slip bobbers, worms or, 1” gulp Alive Minnows to have a total hoot right now with the pannies
The area the boat made a bee line for was on the slow side of a current seam running 4-8ft in depth. At first while anchored up the only takers where running on the small side. Time past without catching anything sportin’ shoulders and bad thoughts started to enter our heads. Were late, what happened, where did they go About then Tom tied into a bully blue ear, then another took the offering below my rig. Like a switch turned to on, it was game on and a couple fish fry’s were being sorted out of the mix
A good sized log laying just at the seam provided a break that held fish, jigs were lost casting to the sunken wood but the rewards when hitting the bull’s-eye made up for it. Just off the log a ways and in some what deeper water, a few paper mouths were found suspended, nothing like bonus pannies in the mix!
The trip proved Custom Jigs and Spins is not just for the ice. Tom’s tackle was put to the test while using the Gill Pill and piece of worm. My favorite was a Black Diamond Jig loaded with a Gulp Alive Minnow. What started slow ended up being a lot of fun. How could it not be having the UL rods load up with a circle burner after a hook set? Even the 6inch juveniles dug hard trying to make an escape from the obstacle stuck to there face.
At one point the bite died. We both mentioned a snot rocket must have moved in on our prey. Blue Fleck started to fire out a swim jig and it didn’t take long for him to cross the eyes on a fat pike within a few casts. Shortly after getting this river wolf to move on, the orange belly action was once again at a steady pace.
Once the fish fry’s were tossed on ice it was time to appease the casting fix. Of course the Bass Master himself, Tom Donaldson, kicked my butt by tagging the largest green fish of the day. We both had some nice pike take swipes at swim jigs and spinner baits. Tom’s big Bass of the day inhaled a Senko. Short Bass were taken on swim jigs and one good chunk could not resist the shallow running DT Rapala of Tom’s being retrieved across a sand point. Again it was fun for me to take lessons from the man while chasing the green fish.
The day came to a close in a hurry. Where does the time go while being spent on the water with good friends?
Each having a pile of gills was only an added bonus for two guys fishing hungry The camaraderie is what this day of fishing was all about!
Thanks for the company Blue
Good luck fishing people
Custom jigs and Spins, not just for the hard water season

Great report Bret and congrats to you and Blue on a great day! What a great feeling when you set the hook on a big gill and then your line starts going into those big circles getting faster and faster until the gill breaks the surface!
nice report, good job men got to love it when a plan works out.
Great report Bret, I really enjoyed it and could visualize your fishing. Just a sidenote, I got out again today on Monday and killed the bluegill and crappie… and the size is going up(slab city). Starting to get them also on rock too by the way and I also used ice jigs today. Thanks for your report, it sounded like a very nice day!
You can thank me later, I prayed for you guys instead of going fishing.
