We were soaking 8 inch suckers that I found at 4 Seasons Sporting Goods in Red Wing, MN last evening when Tony Capecchi hooked into what turned out to be his new personal best flathead.
We were fishing an area that had a closing dam on on side then under water wood on the other down stream end. We place our bait behind the closing dam and in front of the wood.
Fishing underwater snags is an often overlooked opportunity in my opinion.
Using my sonar, I been watching areas that had above water snags, but the high water of the last couple years have washed them away. At least what the eye can see has been washed away.
Slowly motoring over these spots reveal there is still piles of wood, just that it’s under the water line. This sounds pretty obvious but flatheads don’t really care if the snag they lay in is above the surface or not. LOL!
So last night if another cat person had come by, it looked like we were fishing in the middle of open water.
Friday evening I had the pleasure of going out with Trevor and Mike of the Twin Cities for a channel cat hunt.
We focused on the upper end of Pool 4 and it’s tributaries. Since the rollers are back down it the water it’s slowed considerable. Still very fast for this time of year but the cats have to eat and we were happy to supply some treats for them.
All fish came in on Secret Seven and Sudden Impact fiber bait from Team Catfish with the exception of one that picked up a squashed sucker head.
We moved around to keep the bite going. Seems like we would hook into a couple three fish and then the spot would just die.
We anchored in the main current with no luck, all the fish came from the current seams nearest the shore on either side of the river. The bites came from the slack side of the seams.
Sturgeon dancing will be starting in just a couple weeks. I’m dusting off my dancing shoes!
My lookout spotted you last night. When are you going to tell us the weight on that hog of a flat?
Ya me too Brian, 45 lbs?
That’s not your lookout…it’s not eating a fish!
BTW I’ve only spotted our owl once this year. Kinda miss him.
Tony’s flat pulled the digital to 40 pounds.
Well done Brian. Great report. That’s a heck of a Flathead!
40 lbs is an awesome flathead, congrats to the angler! Good to hear your still getting some good fish Brian!
Looks like the bite is going good everywhere.
Great job Brian staying on fish in the never ending changes of the river
good looking fish congrats tony on a pb. good report
Looks like a lot of fun! Great job Brian putting some more cats in the boat!
Nice fish Brian! Tx for stopping by the other morning. I’d bet I had a bad case of pillow hair eh?
Great Job BK!! THAT IS ONE HECK OF A CAT!! Do you need to tie customers in the boat or to a tree when fishing?
Life jackets Chris…life jackets.
Hey Tim, I was wishing I had my camera for your new avatar!
Tony said “I think it’s a log.” when he set the hook. When the heavy action St. Croix was bent over the side of the boat…I asked him if he still thought it was a log.
I’m kinda mean that way.
Nice Flathead Brian,
sure don’t think it took too long for the log to change his mind. 1/2 a moment maybe ?
looks a little bigger than 40 pounds, you might want to check your scale if you have not done it before
Jack
That was one hell of a great catch, know I’m ready to start fishing for flathead.
Well you better get out there Skinner! Lot’s of large fish being caught NOW!
