Free Guided Fishing Trip – Recap

I’d like to give everyone a recap of Captain Don Borgwardt’s day on the water. For those that don’t remember, he won the free fishing trip that I offered to honor a veteran. Don had his choice of three premier fishing trips and he chose the MilleLacs Lake trip.

Don and I hit the water in search of walleye and small mouth. We started out the morning fishing walleye on the gravel in 25′-27′ fow. We boated a nice pile of fish over the next couple hours using Lindy rigs and leeches. After our first gravel spot slowed, we moved around the gravel picking up a few more very nice over fish.

As we approached noon the wind was almost non existent and, as usual, under these circumstances the walleye bite slowed dramatically. So we decided to switch gears a bit and target some sumo MilleLacs smallmouth. We pitched craw tubes and senkos at rocks piles in 7-8fow. A slow retrieve produced most of our fish. All of the fish we caught were extremely fat, including this 21” beast small mouth.

After boating that hawg smallie, we noticed the wind was starting to pick up, so we decided to try for a couple last walleye. After getting back to the gravel, a quick scan with the Lowrance made it clear the fish were back. We were only looking for one or two fish, but 14 fish later we finally decided to call it a day. It was a great end to a great day on the water.

Don, it was a complete honor to fish with you and I couldn’t have been more proud to share the boat with such a great American as yourself. Thank you for your service to this great country!

I bought my first boat when I was 13 and I've spent about every day since on the water or ice. I do most of my guiding on MilleLacs and in the Alexandria Lakes area.
