Lake Wisconsin Multi Species Fishing Report

It may be awhile before I can get back out fishing on Lake Wisconsin but if that’s the case, these last couple of weekends should hold me over just fine.
The suspended walleye bite is still going pretty strong even though water levels and current flow increased quite a bit. Most of those fish are still running on the small side but we did run into some keepers and slot fish along with a very nice wayward pike and several dandy crappies this past weekend.

I spent most of Saturday morning and then again late afternoon trolling crank baits. We caught a lot of fish again as usual but no keepers on Saturday morning. The one good fish we did catch on Saturday morning turned out to be a big northern pike. She put up a good battle and we rewarded her by gently releasing her back into the lake after a couple of photo’s. Hopefully, she’ll show up on the end of our line again in a year or two.

Saturday afternoon was spent with David & Ryan Sands from Deforest, Wisconsin. The crank bait bite wasn’t bad but it wasn’t quite as good as it has been either. David & his 18 year old son who is going to UW Stout and plans on playing quarterback for the football team ended up with one slot fish, two keeper walleyes, four big crappies and the usual mix of shorts. The one big mistake I made today was not taking any pictures. The crappies they caught were running about 13″ and they would have made for a nice photograph. I know David was snapping photo’s but I totally blew that one.

Jason Reese and I fished from 6:00am to 2:30pm before taking a tour of the lake. Jason is somewhat new to Lake Wisconsin and has been more of a bass fishermen over the years but wants to branch out and learn how to fish walleyes. He couldn’t have picked a better day as this turned out to be one of our best so far this year.
We started out trolling cranks and that put four keepers in the boat along with a lot of short fish. The shorts definitely kept us busy.
Around 11:30am we switched over to pulling crawler rigs behind bottom bouncers and that technique put another three keepers in the boat, a bunch of shorties and a 26-1/2″ bonus walleye.
Late in day as we were fishing, I mentioned to Jason that Lake Wisconsin was easily one of the best walleye & sauger fisheries in southern Wisconsin. His comment was as follows: If you would have told me that before we started fishing today, I might have argued with you. Not any more as Jason scored his first ever legal limit of walleyes and put his personal best in the boat to boot.
Days like this are definitely what makes it all worth while.
