Lake Wisconsin early summer walleyes & saugers

Spent Saturday morning chasing walleyes & saugers with long time friend Mike Jacobs and his grandson Mikey Jacobs, jr.

The goal today was simple, get Mikey Jacobs, jr his first every legal walleye. Anything after that was pretty much a bonus.

With that goal in mind, Mike Sr. and I took turns grabbing rods out of the rod holders, setting the hook and then handing the rod over to little Mikey, who was all to anxious and happy to reel in the fish.

The first thing I noticed was that water temps had dropped drastically from last weekend. A total of eight degrees.

With that in mind, I found it hard to run right past several good crawler fishing area’s just to go troll for suspended fish that may or may not be willing to play. Just couldn’t do it.

The crawler rigs came out and we started catching fish right off the bat. The good bite lasted for the first 2-1/2 hrs before slowing down considerably over the last 1-1/2 hrs.

Crawler rigs for those who haven’t read many of my reports before are either slow death hooks or crawler harnesses run behind bottom bouncers.

Mikey jr. managed to put 17 walleyes & saugers in the boat, four of which were legals while gramps and I assisted anyway possible. Mikey caught his first ever legal walleye, first ever legal sauger and put up a personal best 19-3/4" walleye. Something for him to shoot for on our next trip!

Nancy, Kayla (our 5 yr old lab) & I did a repeat on Sunday morning. We took turns reeling in fish while I did all the re-baiting of the hooks. Man’s work I guess but still a lot of fun. It was actually quite nice to not have to guide this weekend. We didn’t keep any fish this morning. Just fishing for fun with the family.

All in all, it turned out to be a great weekend despite the cooler temps and chillier than expected water temps.

  1. Love those crawlers. Nice to see Nancy in the boat catching some fish. It’s such great fun to see the smile on a youngsters face reeling in some nice fish. We need to keep recruiting the young ones for our sport.

Ecnook – John’s right. Even if we can’t get you in one our boats, I’m absolutely positive we can steer you to some pretty good fishing.
