Mississippi River, Red Wing, MN Pool 4 Walleye & Sauger Fishing Report

This is my first report in quite sometime, It’s been a over week since I have had the chance to hit the river last. Things have not changed a lot since my last outing as far as fishing goes, the bite still remains slow to fair for eater sauger and walleye. If a guy spends a good day vertical jigging a limit of fish can be had. Going vertical in 16’ to 28’ of water has been the best depths for this presentation. Fish have been taken on all sorts of plastics, hair jigs, and plain jig and minnows have produced as well. The littler fish don’t seem to hard to catch but the better than average size walleye have been tough to get in the boat.

I started my short Tuesday afternoon outing pitching jigs to some of my favorite shoreline areas and boated the above big mama walleye that hit the scale at 11lbs even. This fish was caught on a chartreuse pepper ring worm in 10’ of water. I took 2 more fish out of this spot in that typical 17” to 19” range. When the bite slowed in this area I jumped around getting one fish here and another there, but not a lot of fish one certain area. All of my fish on this afternoon, except for the one pictured above, were in the 17” to 19” range.

On Wednesday I spent the day with Willie Kuecker and his friend Don. The early am found us looking in the shallower depths for some more of those big eye’s but we were unsuccessful in our search. With a quick change of pace we moved to the deeper depths and vertical jigged in 16’ to 28’ of water. Shad bodies got the nod as they took a bulk of the few eaters in the 15” to 18” class that we put in the boat. Right around noon we made the decision to spend the rest of the trip looking for a bigger fish. The whole afternoon was spent running around the river pitching various sand bars and rip rap sections with out a fish to show for our efforts. I guess you don’t know if you don’t try!! Thanks for spending a day in my boat guys and I look forward to doing it again in the future. In hope the rest of your vacation was is a pleasant one.

We finally have a bit of current in the river and the visibility has fallen off dramatically. I could see my jig down about 12” to 18” depending on the area we were fishing. The visibility was about the same all the way down to the head of the lake area. There is very minimal debris in the river right now.

This weekend is the first of the in-depthangling.com Walleye Tour tournaments held out of Everts Resort. More information on the tourney can be found here. In-depthangling.com Walleye Tour The weather looks to be nice and there should be a good number of fish make it to the scales. The guys who figure out how to get a couple of the bigger fish in the boat should fair well with the slower bite. But as always, it is fishing and things could really break loose by the weekend bringing a fair share of the participants big fish galore. Good luck to the all who fish!

Until next time, I’ll see you on the river!

  3. am sure happy to see Dustin has not lost any of his TOUCH, after this long winter. a real Beauty. man oh man. keep’em comin’. thanks Jack.

  4. I have not gotton a lot of fish shallower than 10′ of water as of yet. Today we had good action on walleye in 12′ to 13′. No big fish for the day, our fish were all carbon copy 17 inchers . Chartreuse ring worms got the numbers for us but guys fishing hair jigs did better on bigger fish

  5. Hey Dustin I am a new member and enjoy your insigght. I plan on heading to Pool 4 Tues. any advise? I noticed the week end tournament went well, but diddn’t see the results. Thanks and any info will be greatly appreciated. Water depth that are holding fish and the best areas of the river would be gr8

  6. Welcome to the site!

The dam area is still the best place for the numbers game. jig/minnow, hair jigs and plastics have all taken fish for me on the last outing. Guys who ventured down river for the tourney got some bigger fish and a few figured um out in the dam area as well.

I have caught fish in 10′ to 28′ of water, depth has changed daily for the most part.

Here are the results for the 1st of the 4 tourneys. Results

  7. Everts Resort has 3 ramps that can be used and the back channel launch off of HWY 63 is open as well. I think Bay Point still has ice on it .

  8. and baypoint is iced up as of today. tues, 3/23. Evert’s would be the recommended ramp , great shape, docks are and have been in, and no problems. WI back channel is also open. no docks . Jack.

  9. Dustin,

Great reporting. I’m also new, and in the process of relocating from Michigan to Northfield, MN.

A few weeks ago, on a “scouting” trip, I went to Alma, WI, and threw a line in from shore below the dam, working out the kinks in my casting wrist for the summer. Question: Do the Everts Resort ramps get me and the boat on the river below the dam, and how far away is Everts from the dam?

    Thanks,

    Bill

    Captain Cat

  10. CC,

It’s a 3 minute boat ride to the dam from Evert’s(depending on what boat/motor you got). Nice short ride, plus Steve is always very helpful!!

  11. C.Cat, pool 5 starts at the dam at Alma, and down river. there is a boat ramp on the south edge of town. there used to be a gas station and bait shop right across from the turn off 35 to the ramp. Think they are no longer in business. that’s not very good directions. someone elso am sure will be more clear. the dam is probably 1 mile north of the ramp. hope that helps. Jack.
