Alma WI, Mississippi River, Pool 5 Fishing Report

Well it has been a while since I wrote one of these reports on Pool 5. So hopefully I will try to remember how to do this. All I can say is I am glad it is starting too finally warm up and the fish are starting cooperate. I have been going through some major withdrawals. My wife says she was thinking of putting me a suicide watch with the lack of fishing I have done in the last two months. LoL! Needless to say I finally back on the water this week and I am feeling good now.

Lot of things are starting to change right now on pool 5. Most the fish are starting to make their way up to the dam from their wintering holes. I have done a lot of presentations this week just to find out what has been going on. The vertical jig bite right now is in great shape. Mostly little fish but with a days effort one has been able to put some descent limits in the boat. Most of the fish right now have been saugers. Most of the people right now have been vertical jigging with FisherFlick jigs, killer jigs or Fireball jigs-with minnows, in the main channel from the landing all the way up to the dam. Areas on tips of wing dams have been producing most of the better fish.

I have also spent a lot of my time pulling cranks. Pulling cranks along the tips of the wing dams have produced the best results. No key depth worked better for me here. Different stretches of wing dams have different depths that need to be keyed on. The best area right now is in the main channel out in front of side cuts and small rivers. Longlining shad raps or pulling cranks on three ways with # 7 floating raps have had the best results. Pulling lead core has put a few fish in the boat also but nothing to brag about yet. Most of my lead coring has been along riprap in about 15-18 feet. Most fish I have been seeing have been in the 15-22 inch range.

The best bite of all these right now has been in the early morning or late evening pitching Fisherflick jigs. 1/8 oz- ¼ jigs have been the best. Sand flats have been the best place to pitch. Sand flats with deep moving water has been the best spot on spot. Throwing the jig out to 26’ and working in back into about 8’ have been the best depths. The first picture up are ones that my father and I got in a couple hours after work.

Overall the fish are biting. Nothing of any monstrous sizes yet but if you spend a full day out there you will have a nice meal of eaters from Ma when you get home. It is all about getting those brownie point if you know what I mean. I will be flipping back and forth from pool 4 to pool 5 all month. Make sure you stop and say Hi. However I will be in a new Lund after this weekend so you will have to guess which boat is mine.

  2. Mark, Jarad will be busy this week-end but Lee[father] Dylan[brother] and I[uncle] will all be around. stop in the main channel bait shop and say hi or look for a white Explorer or an 18 ft Alumacraft with 115 Evinrude.

  3. yellowdog:

I knew Jarrad was out of town for the next several days. I will be in town the 25-27 on my way back on the 28th. I am looking forward to meeting Lee and yourself and seeing Dylan again. It seems that I always see him when I am fishing with Jarrad. For a guy that likes to pick on his older bro about fishing for them bottom feeders, I sure do see him out there a lot doing the same thing!!! LOL Looking forward to that weekend!!! I will be fishing out of a black Lund Pro-V with a 75 hp Honda tiller.

  4. Mark…..Bottom Feeders are fun to fish for when the bronzebacks and loggerheads aren’t goin…….But trust me I still do have a DEEP hatred for them!!!…lol

  5. Dylan:

Hope we get to see ya next weekend. Considering fireflick has had us all over the Alma area, we should be able to find a fish or two?

  6. We have no maps on pool 5. Over the years they have only produced one hot spot map. That one is really hard to find. I recieved one from a guy that had produced one but it has all kinds of writing on it. You probably wouldn’t like all the lines and X’s on it.

I think he opens at 6 am now.

  7. i’ve got a hotspots book with pools 3-5 in it……very rare

shall we start the biding @ $100

  8. Guys and Gals,

  9. Hi capitan The boat landing is on the south edge of town between the power plant and the feed mill. good luck !

  10. Captain Cat with these last couple warm days the walleyes should be snappin in full force!!! Stop in at the Main Channel an we will get you set up what they are biting on…

  11. Pool 5 can be alot of fun to fish. Its not as crowded and has some nice fish. And they also have large sheephead to make you think you have a 10 lb. walleye on too. Seriously, they are alot of fun on the end of the line. Those fish alone are worth the trip there to fish. No I haven’t lost my mind, lol. Its just that they are that much fun, huge fish compared to pool 4 sheephead. Think big, think fun.
    Thanks, Bill

ps. Jarrad and Dylan say hi to your Dad for me as I haven’t seen him for awhile.
