Out with 3 clients for walleyes and crappie on Castle rock Lake. We got the boat in about 1:00 pm and went out by the Yellow river area drifting using 1/16th once jigs in green, purple and orange combination colors with glow beads on the jigs. We were using split shot rigs as well with beads and colored hooks in various colors also. The water depth was any where from 5 feet to 12 feet of water and we were looking for fish on the lowrance. Some times we would mark fish and by holding the jig about a foot off the bottom some 12 inch crappies would hit the jig pretty hard. We were catching walleyes, crappies and also whitebass doing this method of fishing.
Later in the afternoon the guys wanted to learn how to set up for trolling so we changed over to do some trolling with shad raps and flicker shads and cleos of different colors. We were trolling in the same area were jigging. We were using 2 boards on each side and lead core poles on the inside. The number 7 cranks were set at 30 feet behind the boards and lead core poles had a color and a half out. We picked up walleyes , some big 12 inch crappies on the shad raps and also some whitebass as well. Over all a great after noon fishing with some new freinds today.
Some nice looking crappies there Jeff.
Good info Jeff . I lost a potential state record black crappie boatside in that same area last year.
There are some dandy crappies in the lake for sure. Thanks guys.
Good luck fishing and be safe out there.
