Mississippi River Walleye Fishing Report 5-18-11

Since my last report I have focused my efforts on the bigger post spawn walleyes. As always with this kind of hunt, we do not see big numbers of fish but do usually see 2-8 fish a day over 5lbs. About three weeks ago when the water temps were still in the mid to upper 40’s, pitching or vertical jigging paddle tails did most of the damage for my boat with some fish taken on bait. Since the water temps hit the mid to upper 50’s 3-way rigging bait and casting jigs tipped with ringworm’s, paddle tails or night crawlers have been the best producers for the bigger fish in my boat.

With the water levels high for so long those fish are more than willing to feed once located. I have heard of, and read of several good crankbait trolling bites going in the past couple of weeks as well. Dragging jigs tipped with bait has also put fish in the boat for friends of mine that have done it in the past week. Right now you can kind of “pick your poison” to catch walleyes. If you have a favorite presentation to bring them to the net nows the time to get out and get after it!

I just wanted to take this opportunity to share some information with everyone about a new 18′ boat that has been released. The Skeeter MX 1825. I have run the same boat for quite sometime, 9yrs to be exact. Biggest reason I have run this boat for 9 years is the floor plan of the boat was perfect for my style of fishing. It seemed once the center rod storage came in to the picture most boat manufactures could not sell boats in the 18′-20′ range with out this feature. Well as cool as if might have been to have this kind of rod storage it just did not make sense to me why you would take up all the room in the boat just so you could store rods in the center of the boat The front casting deck got to be most of your boat, it only needs to be big enough for one person to fish off of in my opinion. The cockpit area was diminished as well with the introduction for center rod storage. If it’s just you and a buddy that’s fine but with three others on a guide trip it can be quite cramped. The back of my boat has a large casting platform (for an 18′ boat) that was not taken up with a large splash well. This allowed for more room in the back of the boat as well. The new Skeeter MX has the layout and rod storage I have been holding out for as a river guide. I am excited about this hull design and wanted to share it with all of you

If you are in the market for a new 18″ boat the MX 1825 from Skeeter is a boat you should definitely take a look at. This boat was designed with input from very avid river fisherman and guides. It is very fisherman friendly! You can find more information about this boat by clicking on the following links. Sketer MX Ride An Drive

Until next time I’ll see you on the river!

When not at work I'm busy playing fishing guide on pools 3 and 4 of the Mississippi River.I will fish Lake Pepin but the bite has to be really good on the lake to get me off of moving water.

  1. Tim Feldman and his brother Tom spent a day in my boat chasing those big post spawn walleyes. The wind was brutal this day. Most of our fish came rigging minnows with 1oz weights. We needed the heavy weights because of the 20-30mph winds. Thanks again guys for spending a day in my boat!

  2. We want to say thanks again for the enjoyable time ,and letting us pick your brain on why you do what you do. We appreciate you going the extra mile for us The pictures I got of Tuck are priceless in my Eyes

  3. Spent a day on the water with Skeeter Boat center’s Dave Marquardt. Dave’s best fish of the day came on a chartreuse green core paddle tail pitched in to shoreline current break. We were able to boat 3 good one’s on this day.

Nice walleyes Dave and thanks again for spending a day in my boat.

  4. Andy and Tucker had another big fish beat-down in my boat . It was a battle all day! Tucker took the the lead early on but dad made a strong come back in the end. We took 4 real good fish this day. Rigging bait and casting plastics on this trip is what put fish in the boat. Tucker is pictured above in the report with the 4th Big eye we took.

It was great to fish with you two again .

Thanks again for spending a day in my boat

  5. The day Will and Gary spent in my boat began 3-way rigging bait. We had plans to pitch some jigs but the big fish kept coming to the boat on rigs . We ended up pulling 3-ways all day and put together a great bunch of big walleye .

Thanks again for spending a day in my boat Will and Gary!

  6. The day I shared my boat with Mike and his dad Digger was another big walleye beat-down . It was Diggers birth day this day. We were not 15 minutes in to the trip and his first big birthday eye was in the net . Our fish were again caught 3-way rigging bait. Thanks again Mike and Digger for spending your Birthday in my boat !

  8. Great report as usual Dustin. I keep hearing good things about those Skeeters from people who’s opinion I trust—I guess I am going to have to take a look at one myself.

  9. Digger and I had a blast! Not a bad way to spend your 58th b-day. We might have to try it on his 59th,you set the bar pretty high. Good luck on the water! Thanks again Mike.

  10. Dustin,
Thanks for a great day of fishing! I really appreciate how you share you’re fishing knowledge with your clients. It’s always fun and a learning experience for me!! Looking forward to fishing a time or two later on this year!

  11. That’s a pile of big fish pics Dustin. Happy folks all around. Great work to you and all involved. Congrats Dave on that tanker also!

  12. Hey Dustin,
Heading up from Iowa June 17 for 2nd annual family Father’s Day trip with brothers and Dad. Last year we did really well on jigs tipped with a crawler. I like to have options and am real curious about “pitchin with plastics”. Is there a chance you could give some info on that. General local, depth, structure, size, color. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
