Greg Rudisill – Mississippi Pool 3 Fishing Report

After a long week and weekend showcasing the new Skeeter MX boat around town, It was time for a break and to get back on the water for some Eye action in my back yard. Desitnation Pool 3.

Now that the no wake was lifted on the Croix it was a quick run down stream from launching at the Bluff’s for a look at my usual milk run of spots. High fast water sent me into the back cuts and sloughs looking for areas of milder flow and deeper depressions that those big girls like to lay in. With my Yamaha T9.9 kicker in hand and a 3 way rig slow trolling zig zag paths across the deeper 10-14ft depressions. The 3-way slow trolled at .8-1 mph was key to tightly working the area that a long lead core run just would not accomplish in these smaller areas. Using my 7ft Loomis MBR 843C and a flippin switch reel with 15/4 Power Pro gives me precise control with the contour changes. At the business end, a 3 way swivel with 10-12 inch dropper and 3oz pencil sinker. Doubling up the floating F7 Rapala’s. I generally run a brighter "attractor" color up front followed with a fast snap and a 3ft lead to a rear jointed rap of another color and some wiggle in the presentation gives a double wammie in the target zone.

After locating the targeted the area and making passes through the zone that I was fishing I would slip with the current back down stream to the end of the depression that the fish were holding in and make several more passes until all the biters were swatted. These areas will continue to produce with the warming water temps untill the flow and water levels drop forcing them to move out to main channel areas with higher current flow and food.

The Miss is shaping up to be a great season and best of all it’s almost in my back yard.

See you on the water.

  1. Tuck, I connect it with a fast snap to the rear splitring of the first crank then a 3ft leader to the second crankbait. The second one I always like using a jointed rap to provide a little more action to the presentation.
Running two lures with 1 rod keeps away the always snagging deadstick rod and I can quickly adjust to the depth with the flippin switch reel.
