St. Croix River walleye

Late last week I took out Mike and Mike Myers today, a father and son group, Mike the father was from New Jersey and he stated that the Croix looked like a cedar lake that is common in New England. The water currently has a caramel tea color all its own, and the walleyes right now are really golden. These two showed up in rain gear ready to go, and did a solid job fishing and caught one short of a two man limit, plus two throw backs over 20”s. Nice trip.

05 16 2011- St. Croix River walleye continue to bite well both numbers and size are in the system right now. Anglers report 24 to 27” fish being caught as well as a host of 20” to 22” walleye. Eating sized fish in the 15” to 18” range are also being caught. This season I have seen these larger fish running together where the 20” and up are bunched together or are on the prowl together. Crawlers and leeches are turning walleye on slip weight rigs and trolled spinners. Trolling Rapalas is also working and catching big fish too, bright colored lures are top color choices with firetiger, gold, and chartreuse doing the job. I know anglers like to get a specific depth for where to start but they are all over the place in terms of depth. In this high water shallow works so stick to the 12 to 16 foot depth. Also work deeper on the better structure and probe deep in the 20 to 30 foot range.

Feels sweet to get out and open the motor up after the no wake is off, we got these fish miles downstream of the Hudson area. The channel is fine and holding fish, but I got to see it for over a week…

The river level is on a slow drop, it is 682.1 and the water temperature is 59 degrees. Water clear.
Enjoy your time on the water, bring a friend.
Keep catchin’

  1. Thanks Turk. I’ve been wondering how things have been going out there lately. Just haven’t had a chance to get out, but that is about to change. Btw..nice fish. Do I dare ask if you are finding them on rocks or sand?
