HAHA that rainbow snuck in there somehow whistling

This is the first time I’ve got into any perch with real size to get giddy about. I know that up at Lake Cascade the perch up there pack on the meat, this one I caught was skinny and long 14″. It was the biggest perch I’ve ever held. I’m guessing most of the larger perch in the area are like that. I caught a few between 10-12 inches that seemed to be chunkier. Their definately not brutes like you’d find in the dakotas.

Zip dog, Load up on paddle bugs and dark tungsten jigs. Grab a Jaw Jacker too. Pk predator in pink is my go to lure. If it gets really tough, we put a little Travis Tritt on the radio and it turns into Emeril live fishing channel. Boom, another notch!!! See you FRIDAY!

woot Joe I’m all about a little Travis Tritt! Looking forward to meeting up with you!

If the fish activity level is anywhere near where it was when we were out… you’re in for a treat.

James I really appreciate the info! I love fishing for trout with spoons and as luck would have it I bought a few of those exact tingler spoons! I also wish I could have met you guys, would have been a cool experience to see the who show production. Really appreciate what you guys do. Even if I catch one it will be a successful trip for me having never fished it.

I did contact Marcum and I’ll be sending it in for repair, didnt really get any causes for it from them though. Just was wondering if anyone else has seen this with their units. Just upset I didn’t notice it earlier in the year and will be without it for first ice.

Love all the episodes, especially on ice… here’s hoping for a long ice season toast

I’d love to see an episode where bass are targeted… I’ve got some lakes around that have some decent bass and would love to see some tips on targeting bass through the ice… easier said that done though… keep up the great work.

I’m interested in the new ice flies, I do tie my own though and have had success with ice flies the past two seasons. One of my most productive patterns is just a generic scud pattern. I started using a tungsten bead head on them last year to help get them down quick. I started playing around with them two years ago while fishing for rainbow trout. I had used a bunch of different things that morning but couldn’t seem to key on what they were hitting. I had a fly box with me and though what the heck… I tied on a pink scud with a heavier ratso below it to help sink it. I’d bounce that ratso in the soft bottom of the reservoir and started picking up trout like crazy on the scud. I again used the same presentation for blue gill on another pond and had good success. I’ve had good success with olive and pink colored scuds. I think the ones put out by VMC and Northland will work awesome but if you tie your own flies you can get creative and tie up some bugs specifically for the water you fish. I attached a pic of a pink scud I tied, this thing is loaded with tungsten beneath the material )

The update is good to know about. I really wanted to try one last year but I kept hearing more negative things than positive. I’m still really interested in it though and want to give it a shot.

I have had one since it came out.
I have mine teamed up with my iPad.I will use my iPhone as the remote control or when I venture out and away from my shanty.

Just wondering how long your battery lasts on your apple products? That’s what I’d be using.

One thing that helps my wife’s feet which always get cold while ice fishing is a piece of carpet or a mat of some type to keep her feet off that ice. She’s said it has kept her feet much warmer than anything else. I think have that barrier helps keep the cold from directly contacting her boots. I like to be mobile when I fish, so I’ll set up my shelter and use it as my warm house to go back to once I get to cold, I’ll just go into the tent and warm up then head back out.

My wife always asks me why I need to buy more ice fishing jigs when I have tackle boxes full of stuff. My response ‘because I don’t have these or these are new and I need to try them or I know these will kill it this year’. Then I fall back to my top 5 lures/jigs every year haha…. but it doesn’t matter it’s fun for me to organize and look at my beautiful collection of jigs, especially when the lights are off and they all glow )

I used an Eskimo Quickfish 3 for two years before the piece of junk fell apart… It says it will hold 3 anglers but that all depends on the size of the angler(s). I can only think of one time where I fit 3 anglers in there comfortably. It was me, 5’9″ 170lbs, my buddy (same dimensions basically) and his 5’5″ wife. I take my brother who is 6’3″ and 300 lbs and it became a one man tent pretty quick. The dimensions on the tent are 90″x90″ from hub to hub. Eskimo’s website states it’s 34 ft of fishable area and will hold 3 anglers. Again it really depends on the size of the occupants. I enjoyed the tent when I was on solo trips and even two of us wasn’t awful if we were around the same size. I just wish the tent would have lasted longer…. not very impressed with the quality of it.

I’m looking to purchase a new hub style tent and I’ll probably upgrade to a bigger size just for the roominess factor alone. The set-up and take down isn’t terribly different from a 2-3 man and 4 person tent

USAF… First off thanks for your service! Secondly congrats on the move… If were you I would be spending every free weekend I had trying to figure out flaming gorge lakers. Just a quick google search should show you why )

I second that!!! I’ve never done it myself but it is on my bucket list… There are some real bruisers there, I’d love to get one through the ice. You may also look into Strawberry, no walleye there but some real nice trout. We go there often during the ice season but it’s also a great place to put the boat in.

I saw the pic and that what a fat perch! Would love to find a hog like that. That will be a story for her and her dad to tell for years!

I commonly use a pink or olive BH scud for my second hook on my rig. I’ve found that the bluegill and trout in a few of my favorite places are loaded with snails and scuds. I bet that fly would work pretty well in my home waters.

Are any of you using the HD ICE from Dynamic Lures up that way ? they are a great ice bait . perfect for any bodt of water .

I just bought a few for this year. No ice yet in Utah but I went out on my float tube targeting bass. Looking for locations when the ice does come… But so far I’ve been impressed. I just it like you would a rippin rap. Caught a nice bass and a few slimer rainbows.

I couldn’t agree more. The tips and tactics I’ve learned have helped me put more fish on the ice. I started watching December 2013 when I too came across the show on YouTube. I watch it via You Tube with my son and he loves it. I only wish the episodes were longer. My favorite episode so far is from Glenn Elder, monster white crappie! Keep it up.

I am in Utah and rainbows are plentiful here in almost every lake we fish. With that being said I am pretty comfortable catching them with my ice rod. I was curious about the tip-up; rigging, ling and presentation. I had the thought that Ben pretty much confirmed for me:

“When they are active they hit fast and hard, if you don’t set the hook quickly they drop the bait before you can spell your name. They have very firm mouths which makes it difficult for loose line to dig a hook into. The other tendency is to inspect the “meal” carefully. When they are in this mood they will slowly approach the bait tap it with their nose and taste the water around it, if it moves funny after the tap they swim away”.

I think I may look into the JawJackers. I really appreciate the information Ben and MNBassFisher. Ben I loved that episode 12 on season 8, for me personally that was the best information I could have found. I had never used spoons before ice fishing and that was a game changer for me. I’ve loaded up on slender spoons and VMC spoons. My buddies were amazed at my catch rate compared to theirs (using jigs). So now I dead stick a jig and use a spoon on my jigging rod. Thanks again, here is a big spoon fed bow from last year ) I cant wait for the ice season here… taking too long.

Nice lookin fish! I’ve never targeted musky through the ice. I live in Utah and we have tiger musky. I’d love to try catching one this year! What do you recommend for rigging? We can’t use live bait here. Don’t mean to high jack your thread )

Good to know! Thanks James. I just got all my ice rods out last night and noticed I had a Trigger X plastic still rigged on one and it was soft and ready to fish. Dave I like that box though I may just have to get one of those and keep them organized. Thanks everyone.

Clam has some new plastics wallets this year, you might want to check those out.

I like the look of the Clam wallet, I’m gonna search for one in some local shops. Maybe try and make my own too.
