Not a lake, but we have caught some when walking out from the Bloomington Ferry bridge fishing under the 169 bridge. Nothing big, but you could sight fish them at the time.

Western WI, Mississippi River backwaters when they are spawning. I caught about 5 of them while perch fishing. When the perch slow down, my son and I would have a “dog fish outing” using cut bait. (WI side only) Always caught plenty, along with pike. Good times!

    Good luck.

This time of year, just drive around Tonka. You’re bound to find groups catching ’em.

    Back to the deal.
Thanks OP for posting. Was at Wally World today and decided to check on it. Online price $30, clearance price tag in store on the Sienna showed $24, but I scanned it and showed $14. Not $9, but not too bad. Also picked up a couple other ice fishing clearance items too.

Agree with the above. If I’m keeping any they are 10 1/2 to maybe 13.

Curious, but how would a CO be able to tell the difference between leaded and non-leaded jigs and sinkers, especially open water?

I switched to using small jigheads last year after having the same issue. A lot less casualties.

Minnesota doesn’t allow for double you daily for possession.

    From the MN DNR website:

The new regulations only modify daily limits on the affected waterbodies. Anglers can only keep the prescribed number of fish per day from the water but can return the next day for another limit as long as they don’t exceed the statewide inland water possession limit of 20 sunfish per angler.

Sunday is our only opportunity and I’m leaving it up to the kid. It’s his first weekend day off in some time and he’s been looking forward to spending most of it fishing. No shack for us, so we’ll park close to shore, sit on the buckets until we need to go warm up in the car. Sat overnight low – weather.com -18F, accuweather -5F. Hoping the later is correct.

Morning all, thanks for the input. I definitely have a few more ideas now, and the kids will love building a live well on the ice just for the fun.

Looks like the thread got a bit derailed though.

I fish primarily the border waters, some WI side and some MN side. Rarely keep, but preach reading and obeying the regulations to my teenage son.

As mentioned above, the rules state that culling is legal in MN. My understanding, maybe from reading threads on here is that you need to stay 2 below the limit. I.e. 10 crappie limit, means 8 in the bucket, catch a 9th you can swap it out, but if you have 9 in the bucket add a 10th you’ve reached your limit and can no longer cull.

The WI Reg book states on page 9 that culling is illegal except for certain bass tournament permits. What’s also interesting is that WI mentions you cannot continue to fish a species after you have kept your limit.

    Thanks again for the input.

Old cooler yes… also what Ive done is drill a series of holes in the ice….dont drill thru just to let water come up… there your lake livewell..

I really like that idea! So simple, yet seems effective.

    Thanks guys. Appreciate the responses.
We are very basic at the moment – no sled to transport to anything – couple of buckets with rods and stuff, 7 inch hand auger.
The Ice Well looks nice, but says it needs a 8-10inch hole.

Some sort of lightweight cooler/container with a shoulder strap might work.

What’s the best idea for adding water to cooler/container? A big soup ladle is about all I can think of the we already have.

I’ve never thought about pre-tying leaders. That’s a really good idea in cooler weather.

    Try learning the Palomar knot.
Use a sewing needle threader tool to aid getting the line through the eyelet.

Right or wrong, with a Palomar knot on a smaller eyelet, lighter line, I run the line through the eye and then back through again to form the loop to start the knot. It works for me and no tool needed.

Ngakoue will be a FA at the end of the year. They save $5M or so and get two draft picks back in return. Getting less for him makes sense since the season is 1/3 done already. I’m a Packer fan, but it seems likes MN did ok since their season is done.

We’ve been doing OK even though we moved to a new area and don’t know many good shore spots. Dealing with these winds the last few days has been the biggest obstacle.

Every time we walk the trails in Harrison Park along Nine Mile Creek in Bloomington, we stop at the dam and watch the carp swimming around. Never bow-fished for them though.
