Haven’t been to Mille Lacs for quite some time. Thinking about going up for a day or 2. Looking for suggestions on a place to stay overnight in the Garrison area. Thanks for any suggestions.
For Oahe, Bushes Landing area in July can be good. West Prairie Resort or Sunset Resort are good places to stay.
I have a question for people fishing pool 2. I’ve had fairly good success on pool 2 catching nice sized walleyes, with a 28 1/2” being my PB. If someone wanted to catch a 28-30” walleye, would you recommend pool 2 or Mille Lacs?
I saw on another post that it was based on top 6 fish per day, all CPR. So winning group would have had a 4.25# average. Not bad for dead calm conditions on that lake. We were up there on Thursday and a tournament boat came by us and caught fish by spotting them on live-scope and flipping a bobber and leech to them. 10-13’ of water.
Does anyone know if the St Croix Bluffs Park ramp is open? Thanks.
Called them today and, yes it is open. Will try it tomorrow and give a report.
Jigs and paddle tails have been working here. Like Matt said, lot’s of 18-22” fish.
Thanks for the responses. Just another confusing regulation compounded by the multiple regulations on different lakes. Since I already bleed my fish I guess it wouldn’t take much to gut them too.
Make sure your Helix software is updated. There was an issue with this that was corrected by the last update.
I think I read somewhere that the Hudson city ramp was going to be closed this summer. Does anyone have information on this, whether it’s true or false? Thanks!
I recall seeing some discussion on this but can’t find the thread.
Situation: My Helix 7 lately has been turning itself off when I start the main motor (Helix draws power from the crank battery). Battery is about 2 years old. A group 24. Motor is a 75 hp 4 stroke Mercury. On my old boat this would occur and I think when I’d had boat place look at it they installed a fuse or something to prevent finder from cutting out.
I think what occurs is if the main motor battery begins to draw down (perhaps from all the electronics hooked to it) Helix goes into a safe mode when motor starts and there’s a drop in voltage – thus forcing Helix to shut off.
In terms of advice, would you recommend looking into a ‘fuse’ again, a bigger battery (group 27?), or something else?

A bigger battery will definitely help this situation. Also, turning on the voltage readout on your locator will allow you to keep an eye on the voltage in the battery during the day.
I talked to a resort owner at the Northwest Sports Show and he thought that if things stand the way they are right now, it should be about 6” lower than normal which is an improvement from last fall. He also said basically what luckydave said, a lot depends on what the Mississippi needs.
First post on IDO! I’ve been following the site and this thread in particular for a couple years, however. I’ve actually seen a lot of you out there while fishing from shore- you may have seen me near the Hwy. 5 bridge on the Fort Snelling side.
Excited to say that I’ve recently purchased my first used boat and plan to get out there this fall.
One question for the Pool 2 crew- trusted boat mechanic shops in/near the metro? My trailer is in need of a brake job. Also willing to look outside of the metro too if the level of service is worth it.
Thanks all! Looking forward to seeing some familiar boats/faces out there and making a less virtual introduction.
Congrats on the new boat Ben. I have had some brake work done at Roseville Auto & Marine. Very satisfied and reasonably priced.
Was on the water yesterday. Water temp. was 68. Caught some nicer fish and a beautifully colored sauger. See you on the water.
Anyone been on P2 the last few days and got a water temp? Wondering how much it cooled with the rains…
…a rise sure would be nice, too.
80 degrees on the upper end yesterday. Water did come up a bit, but not enough. A little more current than what we have had. A few small walleye and a nice kitty for me.
Great photo of those 2! Maybe they’ll interview them at the end of the show to here what their tactics were
Yes, that is Mike and Rootski.

Getting a compliment from Marianne about their great sportsmanship by staying out of her area. Good job Mike!
So at what time does Marianne make that run. Hope to be there and see it first hand tomorrow. [/quote
I would guess she will be there by 6:30-6:45.
I asked that question in the members chat this morning and Nate Caldwell said he caught a 29+ on Sunday in pre-fishing on a liquid willow cat, but nothing during the tournament. I can’t believe the fish are in such a big funk now.
Both of my guys had about a 2’ fluoro leaders. Probably made break off their 20-30 lures off.
Thanks Wizard. Knowing pool 2 I think it would of been challenging to sit in the boat for 2 days and not want to share some info let alone not pick up a rod and fish.
I’m not as familiar as you are with the pool, but I do agree, I was biting my lip a couple of times. It is very difficult to sit there for 5 hours without a rod in hand. I told my fishing partner that I know how he feels to sit all day in the boat and not catch a fish . The airport dams were filled with anglers at the start yesterday but everyone didn’t sit in one spot for too long.
Finished my 2 day duties as a marshal with these anglers. I love this format and had a great time in the boat. All the anglers are really great people and willing to give you any advise to improve your fishing skills. The way the format is set up, I think this event was more exciting than the Mille Lacs one. Even though both of my anglers was struggling, I kept telling them that with 2 good fish they could be spending 3 more days in town. Yesterday we were fishing in the area that all the action was happening and within shouting distance Fluekiger (pun intended), Heiser, and Candle. During the last hour it looked like musical chairs the way they were dancing from one wing dam to another and back. With the skinny water this was a gamble cause someone else could move into your spot. This should change with only 8 people fishing now. Will be interesting to see how the rest of the week goes with the weather and water changes coming. Regarding the Minnesota, during the rules meeting it was determined that it is open water up to the first dam, were ever that is. All in all, a great experience. If you have any questions give me a shout. Sorry for the long post.
There is a post day show on H2H Facebook and YouTube sites where they interview the top anglers of the day. Show starts at 4:00. Sometimes they will say how they’re fishing but probably will wait a few days since it is so close and such a poor bite.
Lots of good info on the H2H pre fishing shows on YouTube. Yep. Some guys are finding them, some are not. Some are learning about the trains blocking the ramp at 494.
Wish I would of taken Monday off instead of Friday to watch the guys fish. Didn’t realize it’s only going to be 2 guys fishing Friday.
Hey Mike, actually there will be 32 fishing on Monday and Tuesday and 8 on Wednesday thru Friday. The top 8 from the first 2 days are bracketed for the final 3 days. I’ll be in the boat with one of them on Monday and Tuesday and watching the other 3 days. Should be a fun event and very educational.
I was down there yesterday. Fished the lake and spent a lot of time cleaning lines of mayfly carcasses and grass. What a mess! Found “cleaner” water upstream.
With both H2H and AIM tournaments going on at the same time, maybe they can compare the results of the weights and lengths of the fish. AIM uses length to guesstimate the weight. The first day leader for AIM has 38.5# of fish for a guesstimated 7.7# average. The biggest fish actually weighed during the H2H tourney has been around 5.5#. That’s a pretty big difference. The fish that were caught in the boats I was in were definitely skinny.
I was lucky enough to be a marshal for this event on Monday and Tuesday. All the guys I talked to were really nice and willing to answer any questions you had about fishing. You can sure learn a lot sitting in the boat for 5 hours with a pro. Looking forward to doing it again on pool 2.
