Thanks for the relpy and tip Tom. I will definitely try the Double Surgeons knot. Is fluoro much more prone to being cut by the braided lines than mono?

Again, thanks for the info – that’s what I love about this site.

Wish I could say the same for BPS Fluoro. I saw the recent comparison of fluoros and ordered some 8# from BPS. I was buying it to tie onto HiVis Power pro for drop shotting and vertical jigging. Well, I nearly went blind tying every knot I knew to create a strong connection between the two lines. Every time I tested to breaking point, the BPS line broke at the knot – I never got above 5# of tension. I am telling you that I tied literally hundreds of knots trying to get a strong connection (what can I say, it was a LONG winter). When I was close to chucking the whole thing, I tried some of the knots with good old XL 8#. What do you know, broke at 8.2# with the first J-Knot I tied and 7.8# with uni-uni. I then tied a palomar knot with the BPS 8# directly to the digital scale – broke at < 7#. Needless to say, I have not had the confidence to put it on any of my reels. I’ll be sticking with PowerPro, XL, and P-line for now.

Just my experience. Maybe just a bad spool – who knows.

Good to meet you at the Boat Show today Doc! I really enjoyed our conversation and look forward to attending one of your shows. Thanks for all the information regarding the mapping software. I will get on the stick and contact the Dr. Depth people. If I end up getting the software I’ll let you know. I forgot to ask you, If I acquire data with Dr. Depth on the lake, what mapping software would I use to make the maps with contour lines rather than just color gradients? I will mention to the creator of Dr. Depth that I would like to see the contour lines incorporated into the program.

By the way, my three boys (you know, the ones climbing all over the Crestliner we were standing by ) were quite impressed to meet a real live professional fisherman!

    Thanks,

Great information – just what I was looking for. I’ll have to look into the Dr. Depth. It would really be slick to acquire the data directly to my Dell Pocket PC right on the boat! What type of interface is required to connect a PC/PPC to the lowrance systems to acquire depth and GPS data? Will you be teaching any of your mapping classes in the Metro area anytime soon?

    Thanks,

    TwoBear.

P.S. I’ll look for you at the Crestliner booth at the MPLS Boat Show this Sat. – Will you be there?

    Doc,

Thanks for the info. I am curious about the actual process you use for recording the data to make contour maps. I’m not looking to make production quality maps – just want to map a few small local lakes close to home that have not been surveyed at all.

Specifically, how quickly do you drive when recording? With each pass, how close are you to the previous pass? Do you record the periphery first and then lengthwise pass – or do you use another pattern? How large of a SD card will I need for the recordings? Of the map rendering software you mentioned, which is your favorite?

Sorry for all the questions. This is just great to be able to “pick your brain.”

    Thanks again,

Hey SCC! How are things going at GL? We went through orientation together a few years back. I’m the shrink that headed up north to MN and Hazelden. I knew it was you when I heard that there was an ER doc on IDA! I’ve traded the Mississippi for the St. Croix and several excellent largemouth lakes up this way. We never made it on the water when I was back in LAX, but perhaps we could connect this spring/summer.

I would be interested in something like that. I have only read about the software and would love to learn more.

As a brand new member I definitely say “Good call on this one.” I have been looking over the forums for the past few months. Info on fishing is outstanding, but have been holding off registering because of some of the nonsense in some of the political/religious posts.

Keep up the great work moderators!
