    Deckhand,

Just got back from another weekend at red – the ice is generally about 18-20 inches – there are some thinner spots under the deeper snow – but that was disapearing. you could basically get around anywhere on the lake. The bite changed from a day bite last weekend to an evening bite that started at about 5:30 and went on sporadically throughout the rest of the evening. Stop in to westwinds before you go out and you should be able to get some good up to date info about the roads and accesses. Good Luck.

With a 4 wheeler, you should be fine about anywhere – just watch for drifts – found some slushy areas under the deeper snow. Good luck.

Just got back last night. 2 of us managed 14 crappie, about 10-15 perch and about the same number of Walleye. Walleye size ranged from 6 inches to about 22 inches. The majority of our crappie came mid morning thru about 4 pm. Caught a few after dark Saturday nite – but not a single one after dark on Friday. Went out on Hillman’s road, and got away from the crowds. Heard of 1 group of 7 that brought in 50 crappie – and heard a lot more than came in empty handed. Overall, a great trip.

    RiverEyes,

This photo and the ones in the next post are absolutely incredible. That is definitely a unique talent to be able to frame a photo so perfectly. Keep it up!!!

Well, first off, I would like to say that I am glad to be back home safely. The storm started in up there late Saturday nite, and the drive back was treacherous.

Now for the report: The front appeared to have shut down the crappie bite – I managed 1 13″ fish. In talking to a few houses around me, they were doing very well earlier in the week. Sounded like not too many crappie were caught Saturday. The walleye bite was not too bad – caught 13, up to 22″. In fact all of the bigger fish bit during the day – the little guys got active at nite. There were also a lot of 5-8″ perch to while away the hours.

Does not sound promising, but thanks for the info. I will let you know how we do. Thanks again.

    Derek,
I am heading up to Red for the first time in my life Saturday. Can you tell me anything about Hudec’s? I figured it would be best to rent a house my first time, and you can hardly go wrong with the rates.

Any other advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

I was out last Sat/Sun with a couple buddies and we managed 5 nice walleyes over the 2 days. 18-23 inches and all looked like footballs. Depths ranged from 24-30ft on buckshot rattle spoons and jigging raps.

I made a couple out of 2×2’s and some thin channel bracket that fit the edges of the sled. Then cut a square seat and covered with some carpet pad, then heavy plastic to keep the padding dry, then finally some canvas from wal-mart. 2 seats, less than 10 bucks and about 1 hour to assemble.

I’ve been fishing, but the catching has been slow. We were concentrating on muskies for the most part – Had a few follows and 1 hookup, but none in the boat. Caught a few nice walleyes off of bear island a couple of weeks ago. Last weekend, a few perch only. I will not be up this weekend, but probably will be up the next. If the weather looks decent, I might take a trip to Mille Lacs for the night bite on Saturday the 8th.

Congratulations on the birth of your daughter!! Welcome back to the board. I was wondering what had happened to you. I will be doing a lot more fishing on leech now as a buddy and I went in together and bought a place on the lake in Whipholt – right down from Huddles resort. Hopefully we will be able to hook up and meet some time.

I used to have one with metal runners – The positive side is that it is extremely easy to bust loose – like popping ice cubes out of the old metal trays. But, like what was mentioned – It doesn’t steer very well and it does not stop real fast once you get it moving. I hit a snow drift one night and my truck stopped – but the house did not. Right into the back corner of my bumper!

I guess I just wasn’t holding my mouth right or something – I was using the same baits – Trolling a little fast it sounds like, but doing mainly the same things. I guess that’s why its called fishing. Thanks for all the responses and congrats on some great fish!!

Glad to see you made it up – I will be heading up after work tomorrow for 2 nites of chasing big eyes. I will be on the west end of the lake, so I don’t know if I will run into the Hunters Point breakfast club. Good luck to you and all our fellow board members – Be Safe!!

Wow, Miss one day on the website and I’m on the 10th page of this post. That is awesome. Thank goodness my lawn doesn’t grow as fast as this website – or I’d never get to fish.

There was a big muskie tourney up there this weekend. Every spot that I planned on trying for musky this weekend had a minimum of 3-5 boats working the areas – with as many as 20. I was not able to coax any in – but heard of a few coming in. One fortunate angler landed a 40 and 46 inch fish on Sunday – and he was not in the tourney!

Thanks for the tips Steve – If i tie into one, you can be sure I will be reporting it come Monday. I have only caught 1 in my life, a very scrappy 6 pounder. So I have lots of room for improvement.

Great fish and awesome photos Dave!! I was up there this past weekend with a buddy. We hooked one that broke his line on the hookset – Bad time to find out the braided dacron was rotten. Had 3 more follow right to the boat but could not get them to bite. I actually had the first one turn 3 times on a figure 8 – but he would not take it. Even though we did not land one, it was very exciting seeing those monsters just appear and disappear by the side of the boat.

I hope this is nothing that really catches on, or the next thing you know our resources will be exploited for money like bears for their gall bladders etc.

I just heard the sad news myself yesterday! They are top notch people who ran a great business. Tim was always good for a few side splitting stories. I’m gonna miss them.

I have seen them advertised in either outdoor news or walleye insider – if I can find the info in one of my back issues – I’ll be happy to post it for you. They look pretty good. I think you can get a 5 gallon bucket with the bottom cut out down thru them – that would cut out any draft that keeps freezing up your holes.
