Got up for a trip last week. Leeches and Crawlers on a Lindy rig were the trick during the day 8-10 feet of water, jigged shiner and a 1/8 oz.jig in 4-10 feet bays in the evening for a good bite as well. Biggest was 26 inches, although I did get a thiiick” 24 incher that probably weighed more.

That thick fish was caught trolling a minnow rap in 30’ of water just off mid lake reef during mid day. It appeared to be getting fat off Ciscoes is my guess. I put two 24 inchers side by side in pics for comparison. Doesn’t do it justice but you can see the difference to some extent in girth.

I like the look of the darker walleyes. I’ll have to pay better attention this year on what I see.

I have to agree with Grubson on the Kab Walleyes. Seems to be a variety of color phases.

We went up Kab for one year when we couldnt get into Canada. Beautiful lake. The fishing was quite a bit different than LOTW. You had to fish in the wind. We did really well until the wind switched. Then we had to adjust and get back in the wind.

That reminds me of a time we were fishing Bittersweet Island. The wind was hitting at a perfect angle for a corner and the walleyes stacked up in that spot. There were 3 foot rollers coming in… A guide boat tried to push us off which was ridiculous as we were there first and there was plenty of room. I finally took over the boat for my too nice dad and as he moved to cut us off, I asked which direction do you want me to go? He pretended he didn’t understand… I said I’ll give you plenty of room but if I go inside you cut us off of I go out side you cut us off…I’m trying to stay at least 20 yards away…but if you keep pulling these moves I am pretty sure your boat is worth a lot more than mine and the damage when we hit will be worse for you…he put his head down and said sorry…we both proceeded to just nail the walleyes for about 2 hours straight. Only 2 boats out there that were out in the wind. Then the wind died down and the bite stopped. Never have had that perfect wind again for that spot on the spot during my time up there.

I’ve never tried lead core. Need to add it to my repertoire… as an alternative you can long line cranks on a braid 8-12#. You can get pretty deep with a minnow rap or similar, but you might need to let out up to 150’ of line. I haven’t used that approach much on Kab, but have done it for Lake Trout in the BWCA and Quetcio. In the canoe I want it simple, no weights or other attachments… All of these trout were caught May through August. No weight or attachment’s. Should work for any fish in a pinch if you don’t have leadcore.

We go out of North Star Resort when we go. Used to use Park Point before it was sold. Old owner of Park Point was great, just couldn’t book us for the next year due to possible sale (at the time possibly was going to be a private owner who was going to convert the resort into personal cabins)…we helped North Star with some trees after a storm and he invited us to stay there if things didn’t work out. Been going ever since. It’s like staying with friends (except ya pay) very bare bones resort, but it suites us.

My uncle has been going to Kab since the 60’s but I’ve ever actually been there with him.

Will be up in a few weeks if I can get away from work.

Nice fish, will be up myself in a week and a half. I am going to try to work the shoreline/edges a little more with jigs and suspending baits as well. Even if it isn’t as productive it is just plain more fun.

Hey poomunk We caught some northerns and a nice walleye one time in that bay/waterfall area. Probably 5 years ago…never tried it again, did you fish it? Seeems like it would be better early in the year?

Close, I think it is Arrowhead Lodge that right next to the ramp and we are straight across the bay from Arrowhead and the ramp.

North Star is a pretty old resort, the owner now bought it in the 70’s…because he went there every year and when it went up for sale he was afraid he wouldn’t like the new owner so he just bought it himself. Most of the people going there have been there for a couple of family generations—he doesn’t really seem to care if his resort full or not. We’ve been there several times in June and we are the only guests. They treat it like a retirement home more than a resort.

We used to stay at Park Point, we and the owner of Park Point (former) helped Northstar with a tree situation…when Park was selling and couldn’t gaurantee our reservation North Star invited us to stay there if it didn’t work out. The rest is history.

We are staying at North Star resort you probably never heard of it, they don’t advertise…it is near Park Point Resort.

We will have 4 guys packed into a deep 17′ crestliner with IA plates…no we aren’t fishing bullheads )

We are heading up on June 10th, primarily fish the West end. Tom Cod is usually good sometimes early evening can be the best there. During the day it is really a crapshoot all of the usual spots listed in the reports work but I find you need to keep moving. Catch a few and it slows move on until you find a bunch of active fish or keep moving…we often stay too long on spots.

We’ll run anywhere though, sometimes run down to Lost and work our way back Sugarbush, Cutover, Harris, Yewbush, Bittersweet, Tom Cod…if we find a good spot we stay. Varies from Day to day.

The West end seems to be better when the water is higher and they have the dams open in the system…must create current?

Sorry about being non-specific but it is the truth.

So I finally tried cold springs, worth the stop. They take good care of their minnows, are a little more generous with the count, supply a lot of the minnows to the area so you are going right to the source.

I’m terrible with names but but there is a place on Hwy 53 about 5 miles South from the Ash Trail turn off. Full blown bait shop, they have anything you need, just ask. It’s the little gas station with the fenced in Deer area for the kids. Somebody will know the name, just call them.

Is that Cold Springs you are mentioning? They are at the location you mention, never stopped there but have driven by many times, maybe I need to stop?

If you are staying on the west end try Tom Cod Bay and the little marshy island (you’ll see boats in fornt of it) in front of Tom Cod. THere was a good evening bite last year 6-9 PM in that area. Sometimes the River mouth produces work the bay right in front or further out where it starts to drop off.

If you troll the bays with cranks near by the river mouth towards Hack Saw that produces.

Cemetery Island, 3 sisters are hiut or miss for me usually but worth a try.

I also like all around Bittersweet Island.

Then try any area that looks good. Bays that are windswept all day produce in the evening well if they have emergent weeds as the shiners might be up in there spawning. Sometimes the best spots are new ones no one else is hitting.

There are many more areas to try but that is a good start. Have fun!

Here is the walleye that was shaped more like a smally. The pics don’t do it justice. Both walleyes were a little over16.5 inches, the sauger was almost 16 inches and we included it in the photo for perspective. We thought the second walleye was very plump for a walleye but then I caught the top one in the photos. It took 2 hands to hold onto it.

I almost just threw it back without a measure because it felt so heavy but my brother said it wasn’t 17. Never seen a walleye this proportionally thick. Once again the photo doesn’t do it justice or give the full perspective.

Thanks for the report, will be up on June 7th. Coming up quick. Haven’t tried trolling cranks before might have to give it a chance.

Good job finding something that works.

Yep, always an awesome time. Probably the best weather I have ever had on a trip to Kab.

Just got back today. The bite was all over the place, but shallow from my experience on Kab. Early evening we found the best action in 5-8 feet. During the day anywhere from 7-21 feet. We didn’t try deeper because we had good action. Yesterday was very slow for us, but that might be because of the bluebird skies and warmer weather they were moving deeper. It was our last day so we weren’t real motivated to search another pattern.

Thanks for the report. Nice job. Kab is a fav of mine. Will be there the second week of JUne. Good job with the smallys. We haven’t caught many up there, but haven’t really tried either—your pics are inspiring me to try for some smallys this year.

Well just got back from 4 fabulous days of fishing and weather on LOTW.

Very consistent bite going on now at the south end. We had good luck fishing from Twin Rocks to Twin Island area. Others reported good fishing off of Lambertson’s Rock and down by Warroad off of Springsteal point.

When the wind really kicked up so did the fishing and found the bigger fish in 12-4 feet. Otherwise 18-12 feet seemed to hold fish well as the wind died down. No lunkers for us but alot of really nice 18-22 inchers were caught.

When the fish were on the feed as the wind kicked up trolling 4 or 5 size hammered gold/silver or holographic spinners seemed to produce the best bite with at least a trolling speed around 1.5 mph. As the wind lessened smaller blades and slower speeds worked better. We did better with leeches and crawlers, minnows did not seem to produce as many fish.

Hooked into a Sturgeon and battled it for 70-80 minutes before he came up to look over the boat. Once he saw us turned quick and took off with everything he had, my drag couldn’t react quick enough (neither was my ability to back reel) and he just stretched my line out completely rendering it all worthless. A lot of fun, with we could have seen more of him. We estimated him at at least 60-70 inches, but really did not get a good enough look at him.
