I always drop down minnow head on a spoon and live on dead stick. When I’m inserch mode like a pice of structure like a hump and put down a ripen rap and see if I can get any marks to come in and if it doesn’t hit live bait while I move to next the other side of hump and if no marks move on to next spot till I find active fish

I use seaguar flouro leader material. Not just regular flouroUntil recently, I actually didn’t know there was a specific type of fluorocarbon designed to be used to prevent bite offs. I started using the Seaguar Blue Label to prevent getting bit off based on advice from a commenter on this thread last September. Previously I was using the standard Seaguar Fluorocarbon like I had used for years.
It makes a world of difference. The leader material is some tough stuff
thanks for the tip

Isn’t that what a rattle reel does?not if you want to play a fish on a rod and reel.
Okay I’m going to give out my big rattle reel secret in my ice house. Under my rattle reel I have a rod that hangs in a bracket with out a reel that my line go’s through the eye’s and when the rattle reel starts to rattle I pull line out and grab the rod set the hook and play it in like you would on a fly rod don’t tell anyone 😉
that’s interesting as well. The bobber was worth the four bucks just to get this info!
No problem form home town neighbor have a good time catching fish

February 16, 2021 at 7:16 pm #2015511I have a ice castle 🏰 with a camper style door found that in the extreme cold the dead bolt and Latch lock like to freeze and can’t on lock them. So I took them apart and put beaver tip up grease on the moving parts and has worked so far the do still feel stiff in extreme cold conditions but still work
I also keep a screwdriver in house to take latch apart because there was one time I locked my self in with deadbolt froz with all the moisture on night only locked door to keep my drinking buddy from messing with me when I went to bed It hasent happened after the greasing the latch but still keep it on hand
February 4, 2021 at 3:48 pm #2012179I’m always looking to learn new presentations. Care to share any Troy? I can PM you if you prefer.

ut you gotta learn the lake.So right. Another lake I targeted was loaded with fish after a walleye rearing pond flooded into it. The downfall was the water clarity was 20 ft. Good luck catching them during the day!!
Just have to change the way you fish them
I live where we have alot of clear lakes in Hubbard County and catch fish in the day light hoursFebruary 2, 2021 at 7:59 pm #2011632Yes, I do. The best walleye fishing I ever had for quantity and quality (14″-22″) was on a lake that was just sampled a year or two before. By the summary of the lengths of netted fish and tacking on 2 inches per year they should be nice keepers and they were. For 3 guys, caught over 100 fish for the morning. ~20 doubles and 5 triples. Flipping in fish up to 22 inchers after we had our limit. Went through 2 scoops of fatheads, couple dozen crawlers and a dozen leeches. It was interesting because jigging outfished rigging at least 10:1. This was on a Sunday of opening weekend on a west central MN lake. Dead calm, bright sun, 10-15 feet of water on a mid-lake hump.
This would be my best open water fishing memory if there ever is a post for that.I’ve been there get done fishing think you have it all figured and ready to jump on the pro walleye circuit and 3 weeks later get schooled by the fish lol so humbling use serveys all the time info is better then no info
February 2, 2021 at 6:58 pm #2011607Love my otter rod case don’t know what you have in mind but iid you got a customized rod you don’t want to cheep out. Had all kinds and all kinds of broken rods but never in my otter rod case have the old all black one and just bought the new blue and black one ill have to take back what I said earlier the only broken rod in the old case was when I closed the tip in it you only do that one time
Congrats on the new custom rod and with your investment to protect itFebruary 2, 2021 at 6:37 pm #2011598I will be out. Some of our best and worst bites happen in this weather. I wont be able to know which one it is until I get out there.
I work out side all year. Our cut off is 10 below. Many times pushing that. So fishing is ten times more enjoyable then thatWork out side also cold temperatures not a big deal its that dang wind
I’ll try fish before the cold and as long as the cold temp stays cold will normally do okay I think the first day has the most effec on the fish but if it stays cold for more then few days fishing will stabilizeJanuary 30, 2021 at 12:48 pm #2010669Hummingbird fish smart app is what I’ve been using 3 or 4 years now and has been good it dose have some lag time but has been better then navionics or any Garmin maps. The down side is most lakes are 9.99$ and the big water like leech, red, mille lacs,Cass chain is 29.99
But in over all been 😊January 26, 2021 at 9:01 pm #2009776Ok my bad after further research found this in the ND regs.
All legal live aquatic bait used by anglers, including legal baitfish, must have been purchased or trapped in North Dakota. No live aquatic bait may be imported into the state by anglers. This includes live baitfish and leeches
Sorry for my lack of research 😔

Products manufactured as edible fishing bait and other inert biodegradable substances are legal bait.

January 22, 2021 at 9:48 pm #2008597Check out some of Holst’s early ice video’s for the spot on the spot segments. That has good info.
This lake has alot of structure and depth changes. I usually start with shallow flats or points near deeper water. If they have weeds then even better. Shallow during low light, deeper during the day. Pike will likely stay on weedy flats all day. Also look for saddles….deeper water cuts with shallow on either side. That’s a natural travel route for fish.
If I was fishing this lake for the first time and I’d look for the community holes. See what is unique about that structure and check the maps for other similar areas. I’d also go chat with some folks on the ice.
×2 good info
