I have a 1/2 inch piece of plywood that’s about a foot wide and about 4 feet long. I put it right in the bottom of the shack when I pack up. It also helps get your feet off the ice so they don’t get cold as easy. You would think that the plywood would be slippery on the ice but I haven’t had any problems.
I have to agree with you on Carl’s lake, I was out there on Saturday and it seemed like people couldn’t wait to fire up their truck just to hear the dual pipes. It was unusually noisy. As far as the bite on Carl’s goes, we had some fair action until dark and then they got really picky. During the day they were also picky, as we could see on the camera but you could still entice them and catch a few. We did round out the day catching crappie, bluegills, perch, and one 7 inch walleye. Generally Carls will give you consistent action every time you go out there.
I’ve fished the Frontnac area a few times over the year and the fishing is usually hit or miss. Sometimes more miss. Remember that the ice on the river isn’t the same thickness as on the lakes so make sure you exercise some caution.
Brian, The HT Cleats that I’m talking about are about 6 bucks. See my link in my previous post.
The problem will be that a couple hunderd bucks won’t buy an FL-18. You can buy and FL-8 for around $300 and expect to pay another $100 for the FL-18. I would agree however that you won’t regret it.
Did you guys see the Bobshack? It was an ice house with a Waldoch custom conversion. Big screen tv, leather couches, satellite TV the whole works. I could have sold my house and moved into it.
Looks like one of the easiest ways to get one is right here.

Looks pretty good to me. I spend enough time on the cnn website to pick out a few irregularities though. The biggest tip off it the URLs, the URLs for the bush articles are all world-cnn.com and all the rest are cnn.com. Can you imagine this person’s powers were used for good instead of evil. We’d probably be looking at free interactive lake maps on IDA instead of seeing bogus bush pages.
Brian, they’re all part of the perch (Percidae) family. Here’s a link to the family. It includes Sauger, Walleye, Zander etc.
Perch Family
It at least looks like the Zander is in the same family as the walleye.
I ended up taking in because it got to be more work than I was looking for. It ended up being a good thing because he replaced the seals and pressure tested it and it still had a leak around the top vent screw. The ended up doing a little sanding in order to get the screw to seal properly. I had to fork over a lot more money than I wanted to though.
Pool 2 Ford Dam to Hastings
Pool 3 Hastings to just north of Red Wing
Pool 4 Red Wing to Wabasha including Lake Pepin
Hard to keep clean though, especially with the muddy Mississippi.
I bought a 3 million CP light that plugs into a cigarett lighter and I’m not sure that it’s really as good as the old 500,000 rechargeable light that I had. Its definately more compact though.
Rock, I just bought it from a guy in August and I couldn’t be happier. It barely fits in my third garage stall and I knew I would need the swing tongue to get it in there. I’m still trying to work out a few kinks and do some work like installing rod holder. I’m not sure how a guys owns a boat for 4 years and doesn’t have any rod holders.
Brian, at this point you may want to consider waiting for the ice fishing show at the River Centre in St. Paul. It will give you a chance to look at them all in one place. My only advice would be to understand exactly what you are getting when you look at prices because sometimes they will have upgraded seats in the models on the floor and they charge extra. Also, last year I had two friends buy the Quick Flip III and they actually saved about 50 bucks by getting it at Sportsman’s Warehouse (Anoka as I recall). We actually made calls from inside the ice shack at the show to Sportsman’s Warehouse to check pricing. They moved a lot of shacks that weekend by undercutting the show. The one thing about the ice show is that the manufacturers will not let the retailers make deals on the shacks, everyone has the same bottom line price that they can not go under. Here’s the details about the show.

Barc, sounds like a good idea but I would overflow that milk jug because it has a capacity of 4.7 quarts/liters. If I had some slightly larger it sound like it would be worth a try. LundgEYE, thanks for the picture and the PM, I’ll have to look at Fleet Farm.
Thanks for the insight LundgEYE. Looks like I need to make the trip to Fleet Farm (there goes fifty bucks, yes I know the funnel was $15.) Do post the picture if you have a chance.
Steve, that’s not too bad of an idea. If you can’t avod the mess then at least the cleanup is quick.
Good Job, Nice deer. Did your daughter go hunting with you? Was she excited?

What do you guys consider mid pool 2? I assume that you are talking south of downtown St. Paul.

Why does the other guy catch all the big fish?
I was just thinking the same thing.
