Well, that didn’t take long. The power brokers are flexing their muscles and moved this away from the DNR and into the purly political relm. I guess their lobbyist did their job. Back to emailing, now to your congressman. The Senate has already screwed us and now the house is our only hope. Let them know how you feel.

Thank you everyone that stood up to this. And THANK YOU DNR! I know I will enjoy my fishing a lot more this year. I hope this ends it permanently. There is some language in the letter that might leave the door open for another run at this, but at the county meeting, they said if the DNR does not approve the ordinance, it is done for good.

Sounds like the proposed expansion was shot down by the DNR??

First I’ve heard of a ruling. Is there an official statement? Trying to restrain my enthusiasm. yay

Thank you, I couldn’t find this final version and it’s mandatory for me to read this before emailing anyone with any opposition. I think it would be irresponsible to respond solely based on what my fishing buddies or an Outdoor Forum said was going to happen because that’s there side of it.

And I’m not saying I disagree with what other’s have posted here, but I’ll read through, consider the implications and respond based on my own findings.

the scariest thing to consider is all the other lake associations that were at the hearing last Tues with mouth watering.

My feeling is that they are a new coalition and we need to let them know how we feel about this. Maybe they didn’t even know anything about it?? I understand if you want to hold off sending them money until you see how they respond, but I think you should try to persuade them to join the fight. I sent them $35 to show I am serious. Money talks sometimes.

I find it hard to believe that guys like Schara and Lindner are not aware of this issue. To me it seems like they currently will take money from anyone willing to give it and haven’t yet given us any real-world examples of how that money will actually be spent.

I did email them and told them they would get money from me — and probably from a lot of other skeptics — once they prove themselves by taking a public stance on a controversial such as this one. Prove to me that you are truly an angler’s organization and that you are willing to stand up for us and be our voice. Then the wallet opens up.

I agree. If and when you sending money can go either way.

Also, like you, I wanted to verify what this is. So I reluctantly took a half day off work and drove an hour to the hearing in Wright County last Tues. The recap I started this thread with is first hand knowledge. I just want to fish and never get involved with this crap, but this time I have to. Hope this helps.

Where can one find the proposal currently being considered by the DNR to approve or not? I have “googled” and find information from last summer on the pilot program and another 54 page document by Wright County detailing the entire program.
Before I send emails I would like to read and know exactly what is being proposed before I offer my opinion on the matter.

I can’t equip myself based on comments off this thread.

emails sent and joined MN-FISH, not from that area, but I don’t want this trend to spread like AIS.

Thanks for sending emails and this brings up a good point. I was at one of the meetings last year on this. There were reps from several other counties at that meeting. The one from Ottertail comes to mind, he asked the DNR present there, When can we start this program, we want to do it now!!!!! There was definitely a loud tone in his voice when he asked it. Other counties/lake assoc’s are watching this and want to join asap from what I can gather. Just like Wright county, they aren’t caring what anyone other than the big dollar Lake Assoc’s think. That’s what I’m seeing in Wright county anyways. and yes my letters are sent.

My feeling is that they are a new coalition and we need to let them know how we feel about this. Maybe they didn’t even know anything about it?? I made a few phone calls today and surprisingly talked to two people on the list. Emails will be going out tomorrow also.

Did they have any updates on the DNR position?

Had not heard of trying to increase it to 9 lakes. Not a good sign. As it’s been stated many times already I’m much more concerned with water clarity/quality getting worse due to runoff then desiring to have boats inspected at a site before they go to the lake.

Yep, Wright County already passed th 9 lakes and now it is entirely up to the DNR to approve it. If they don’t approve it by April 15, the ordinance is dead.

I absolutely agree with you on the runoff. At the Wright county meeting last week, some lake shore owners were saying that their water looks like vomit and didn’t even realize that the green slime comes from runoff, not AIS. I’d be willing to bet that if there was an ammendment in the proposal that banned all lawn chemicals for lake shore owners, this thing would have been dead before it got started. I put that in my email to the DNR.

We are always talking about angler not being organized like the lake associations. Well I just joined this new coalition formed by Ron Shara and Al Lindner. We need all the help we can get and I urge all of you to not only send them a request to represent us on this issue, but to join as well. There is a free 2 year membership available.

    Dear MN-Fish,

Thank you for creating this coalition for MN fishermen. I just joined at the founding member level as I have an urgent matter that I think you can help with. The links below will provide insight and a recap of the Wright county commissioner meeting on Mar 19, 2019. Based on all the online posts, anglers are absolutely opposed to this and feel we have no voice. I am asking you to be our voice. Thank you for your support.

So there were 49 1/2 lakeshore owners and 1/2 fisherman?

Yes, it was half a fisherman, but it was his better half.

Thanks guys for all your efforts. That’s my letter at the top of the thread that Bassthumb was nice enough to repost here. Whether it has a impact or not only time will tell. What we know will happen is these Lake Association groups will keep pushing and if we don’t take the time to push back we will get rolled right over. At which point it will be to late to complain.

You got that right. At the meeting, one lake association representative even proposed an access fee on every lake to pay for enforcement, stating you pay to play golf don’t you. They want you OFF!

Yes they have the self certification amandment in there, but think about all the other counties jumping on this, each with there own regs and tags blah blah blah. This needs to be stops before it gets out of hand. Also of interest at the meeting… several lake association representatives expressed that the self certification should be removed from the ordinance. I suspect that other counties and assoications will not want that part in there. Plus it will cost you, so each county will have a fee. Wright is talking about $10 to $40.

This is a death of a thousand cuts. First it was restriction by controlling parking, the AIS stations are the next layer of restriction. Once it is implemented, it will only grow and squeeze us more and more. Did you ever think we would have casinos in MN, it started with pull tabs, then horse racing, get the idea. It is the boiling frog strategy. I hate getting involved with this crap, but this is serious enough that I took a half day off work to go to the meeting. I have had an uneasy feeling deep down ever since I found out about this proposal.

    Urgent update:

Mar 19, 2019 Wright County AIS public meeting recap:

The Wright County passed the AIS ordinance today with a 3 to 2 vote. Now it is entirely up to the DNR commissioner to approve it. The Wright County commissioners said that if the DNR does not approve it by April 15th, the whole proposal is dead for good.

Here are some more details on today’s meeting. There were about 50 people attending, 99% lake shore owners. They all applauded the proposed ordinance (except for the self-certification part). One after another they spoke about how much trouble their lake is in and how much it has cost them to keep AIS at bay. They did a great job of presenting “the sky is falling” to the county commissioners (I always find it interesting that there is no mention of restrictions on lake shore owners using lawn fertilizer that turns the lakes into a green slimy mess. Seems to me that would be a no brainer if you really cared about the lake). Most made a point that they are not trying to privatize their lake and are offended when they hear that. On the other hand, not once did anyone mention that we need to come up with a better way that does not restrict access. Only one lone fisherman addressed the council and said that he bypassed the three test lakes last year and will bypass the additional lakes if this passes, too much hassle. Hmm, funny how that works. Imagine if this catches on and all the lakes are restricted, sell the boat I guess. There was also mention of a need for an exit inspection process. Not sure what that means, but didn’t sound like it would be in lieu of the proposed inspections and you may end up having to get inspected before and after you go to the lake.

Also of interest, the commissioners said they have received many inquiries from lake associations around the state and there were several other lake association representatives at the meeting to observe and see how they could implement this same strategy. So Wright County will be the test case for every county in the state to run with this. What a disastrous precedent. Not to mention the regulations and tags would be different for every county, making it cumbersome and impractical. The self-certification will have a cost of $10 to $40, so multiply that by how many counties you fish.

What you can do if you want to stop this from happening:
The entire fate of this proposal now rest on the DNR. The Wright County commissioners will meet with the DNR commissioner on Mar 21. If the DNR does not approve the plan by April 15, it will be dead. Send your concerns to these DNR contacts right away so that they receive it before they meet with the Wright County people.

PS, you can read the emails send to Wright County on this link. Notice how organized the lake associations are with their form letter that you just sign and send. In particular, notice the one from the Clearwater association #34 on the page (see where this is heading?).
