My post is probably in the wrong forum but since not ice fishing, per se, and not species specific so ……I stuck it here. Mods, move it as you wish. God Bless

My apologies to Humminbird. They just sent me a link to the manual on this unit in which there is 163 pages of information with photos.

The transducers and zoom are explained in detail.
It will take me a day to read it and a week to understand….but

    Thanks, Humminbird.

Sorry for dragging this up from the basement but some comments have me confused.

It took a couple readings before it dawned on me a lot are not discussing the ICE unit.

On the 20/60 transducer (that the Ice version comes with) just what exactly is wrong with the 60 degree or should I say why would the standard (boat) transducer frequencies be “better” for ice fishing? I am not seeing why the ice ducer coming with only 20 and 60 is “unfortunate”.

No, I am not up to speed on the gazillion brands and units out there but I’ve been looking at this one for a double duty unit for ice and my small summer boat.

Another question is on the flasher mode (that I understand ONLY the ICE unit has?) is does the flasher mode have a zoom?

I’m horribly disappointed in HB’s description of the unit and lack of video(s) but some short ones are on youtube but a video showing the difference between units would be AWESOME.

I’m more thinking of buying the ICE version and going with a different transducer for summer…….but I’m up in the air on what I should get. I RARELY fish deeper than 20-25 feet and fish 10-15 90 percent of the time (open to change once I use a sonar LOL)

Again, sorry for dragging this back up but I’m flat confused about the whole summer/winter transducers being “better or worse”. I’d THINK a 60 degree (lower frequency) would be flat awesome for LOOKING in shallower water. Switching to the narrower one would be the option when fishing IF wanting to watch your jig.

For the record, research shows the 60 degree gives a “cone” with roughly one foot of diameter on lake bottom per foot of water. The 20 degree, roughly 1/3 of that.. Just a “rule of thumb” not carved in stone.

    God Bless for any help.

I appreciate all the setting suggestions and have saved the link to this post should I pull the trigger on one

I’m not sure how much you guys in-particular use anything but the Marcum units in flasher mode only and a lot of others do as well but for the IDO Insights segments I know a couple of us here that watch the show have questions about the flasher vs graph discussion.

I’m personally about to pull the trigger on a Lx-6s (about 98 percent positive LOL) but on a few videos I’ve noticed some fishermen use the vertical sidebar flasher along with the screen in graph mode.

I’d be interested in the input on what, if any, pros and cons exist between the two (round and vertical) flashers only and the flasher plus graph combo mode.

Other than the graph showing a bit of history in case something distracted you where you could then see something like a “miss” while you didn’t have your full attention on the unit I’m at a loss what else such a combo offers.

Maybe even part of the segment talking about graph only mode for ice fishing. A relative and his boys do pretty well on Saginaw, Both Bay De Noc, Erie and inland lakes and will openly tell me I’ve lost my mind to consider anything else but just the graph…..so SOME find that option preferable but I feel people should use what they like the best. I don’t have to agree with their choice.
That said, I’d like the opinion of those in the crew of the pros and cons, like I said above and feel it may be a good subject for a short segment of your show.

God Bless. Be safe out there.

    LOL!

My ex wives (3) all said I’d probably die ice fishing.

Reese’s peanut butter cups and/or Hershey bars and 2 liter of Mountain Dew.
Maybe they had some thing there? HAHAHAHA

I hardly touch candy the rest of the year. (I’m celebrating!)

The mustache worms haven’t done much for me either. Not impressed with them yet at all.

One of my go to baits. Catch lots of <strong class=”ido-tag-strong”>panfish with these on a small Tungsten joh

Huh. Another great thread. Thanks to the OP for it.
We ALL love new stuff and seeing reviews here (regardless if they disagree, LOL) is always informative. I’d never HEARD OF a “mustache worm”.

I fish nights with glow hooks over the side of the boat in the summer (all summer) for gills and slabs. I’m willing to wager that these in a glow would be at least something new to add to the arsenal.

Always interested on the boot reviews. My Mickey’s are just more than my old knees and hips want to shuffle around in all day anymore. Studying the Baffin boots (on the Zappos site anyway) the WEIGHT is listed and not all companies do that. I’m assuming its weight PER BOOT though? The (on sale) Patriot 5 (listed for minus 58 degrees) states “1lb 15oz” so…..has to be per boot. LIGHT compared to my Mickey Mouse boots. Thanks for the heads up on that brand too. SO MANY out there……dang.

Nothing new for me other than another “plain jane” Eagle Claw inline reel (my third) and a 36″ Eagle Claw Tony Roach Power Ice Spring Bobber Rod I found on sale for less than half a St Croix spring rod. Coming tomorrow so the weekend will give me some kind of idea how it feels. I needed something a little shorter and stiffer than my normal whippy spring bobber rods for windy days. Hoping it is at least ok…….but would have to be flat horrible for what I bought it for. Not a lot of reviews on the rod or the spring bobber it includes so I’ll have to leave one next week.

Several new (to me) spoons and jigs sitting here for use once this cold snap solidifies things a bit but all “old news” to you guys. Maybe I’ll have fish photos Sunday or Monday.
    God Bless

Man…….I hate adding something here and I’m sure it’s covered in the back 6 pages but, here goes.
I just watched the Fargo North Dakota Jumbo Perch – In-Depth Outdoors TV Season 8, Episode 6 and it was, as always, a great show (now I gotta go buy some dang Tingler spoons, though ) and it was obviously COLD.
Some shows weather conditions/fronts moving in/ etc are mentioned, sometimes not. Barometric pressures aka storm/cold fronts coming in are something I watch and nope, I don’t know all about it, so I’d appreciate it when the guys offer input on such **** when they feel it is applicable”””” to the fishing that day.
No safe ice here and I’m dying. Forecast is as bad too. Two more days of 50s and rain. Ice is junk now.
Don’t make me move North. Don’t think it doesn’t come to mind. Half our winters here in N. IN we get good ice…and it warms up and rains.
Anyway, current temps, fronts and OH YEAH……”Wind from the East…Fish bite the least?” Maybe. Depending on where you are and what East wind brings in????
A fun discussion for the show though, IMO.
God Bless all at IDO for teleporting me to to good ice and good fishing….when I can’t go.

Walked on 1.5″ tonight in Dane county, WI. Felt damn good can’t wait to fish this weekend!

That is mighty good to hear !! Maybe I won’t have to drive 8 hrs north after all !!!

Hoping on decent ice after Xmas here too. Us N. IN and N. IL guys are kinda like unwanted step kids when winter ice is concerned. We get something after everyone else has theirs LOL.

1000 waxies came. Jigs are sorted. Poles and line all checked out. New mantles installed in the Coleman. Our temps are running 10-12 degrees below the month average with single digits forecast some nights and only one day of 32 degrees in the next 2 weeks, so……..I’m hopeful.

Too windy for sure but we have some sheltered lakes around. As long as the Hoosier winter don’t pull a warm up and RAIN (it does that sometimes) Ill be jigging after Xmas.

I asked a buddy who lives outside Bismarck if he is fishing yet. He said “YOU THINK IM GOING OUT IN THIS??” LOL Super cold in his area and forecast to stay.

Waiting to see photos on the forum before I’ll be able to go, but……..I’M READY!

At 64 I feel well qualified to be in the “old” guy group on the ice. My brother is 10 years my senior. I’m hoping both of us got a decade or two left LOL

I simply like the ability to stand erect and fish. Good sunglasses and a highly visible spring bobber makes being close pointless (for me). Hopping holes means no more than lifting my arm and walking a few steps. When the bite is on, I feel I’m way ahead on getting the fish on the ice and the jig back in the hole.

I’ve spoke with guys on the ice, politely asking why they want to be on top the hole. I get various replies. Works for them. That’s all the reason a person needs.

My three in the photo are two 54 inch and my main rod that’s 69 inches. As said by someone else, they DO make great over the side of the boat jigging rods too but I’ve not done that for years, which means I need to again LOL.

In a nutshell, I’d have to say that it’s just physically less taxing for me to fish using them. Kudos to those who can use any and all rods and positions.
I hope that ability stays with you for many decades.

If another has back and knee issues, I only hope this offers an option they might not have recognized right off the bat. I’d not be able to fish at all if I only had short rods.

    Fish on!
    God Bless

THANKS to all who have replied!

Of all the suits mentioned here, is there much difference in the physical weight from one to another? Old and half crippled up the less weight I have hanging from my shoulders allows for more time to fish without unwanted pain in my severely damaged low back. Thanks in advance and Good Fishing!
