Muddy and debris today. Maybe 6” of visibility at the end of the day. 16 fish for 3 guys in 10 hours of fishing. Visibility got worse as they day went on. It’s been tough all week for us compared to past trips but today set the bar.

Listened to Curt Quesnell on Facebook live this morning as he was ice fishing on LOTW. I asked him about the river conditions and he reported a friend has seen open water by Lohman.

I saved this data from an earlier post not sure if it was here or somewhere else. Ice out dates for Baudette.

I was in the same boat with the Remington Accutips. When I first bought my Savage 220 (absolutely love that gun) I bought both the Accutips and Federals Trophy Sabot Slugs. Savage recommended both brands for that gun. I patterned both and decided to go with the Accutips. After going through my supply I swithced over to the Federals for the last few years. I couldn’t find either slug the last few years but found some Federals this summer. After patterning the Federal Sabot I had to adjust my sights a little but still had very nice groupings and 50 and 100 yards. Give the Federals a try I think they’ll work for you.

Plus the Royal Dutchman is a darn good read! I love his positive spirit and it always leaves me fired up and smiling after reading his post!!! The Royal Duchess is equally entertaining with her post too. 😄

Iowaboy1 is “the man” when it comes to trouble shooting engines. He’s helped me out several times. I’m a novice at best and with his help have been able to fix things on my motor on my own. A true asset to this site.

Glad to see a report on Rainy River as I was curious how it went for everyone else. We fished April 5th-8th with the fishing and water clarity getting better every day. We launched out of Vidas on Monday and saw dirty water and caught only 16 fish on the day with the biggest being a 22″. Tuesday-Thursday we fished out of Birchdale where we found cleaner water and more numbers of fish. On Tuesday our boat of 3 caught over 50+ after a 3 hour delay due to some troubles with my boat trailer. Wednesday we had 70+ and on Thursday, in an all day rain we caught 109. Largest for the trip was 29″ followed by a 28 3/4″ and several 27-26″. Lots of fish under 22″. Heck of a trip and we try to make it up ever year but don’t always make it. We’ve only been able to swing the trip in 2012 and ’16 which were pretty phenomenal years. It’s a haul from Des Moines but well worth the effort when the stars line-up.

We have one of their pups from the first liter, same parents. She’s turned out to be a good dog and always up for an adventure. I’ve had her out snowshoeing, cc skiing, ice fishing and a little late season pheasant hunting. Plenty of drive, listens well and a great family dog.

She was a good girl. Had to put her down after the new year. Picking up a golden retriever tomorrow. Hope she’s half as good as our chocolate lab was.

Well I guess I need to read the manual more often. There is a tension control knob for the throttle to control speed. I just thought it was for personal preference on how tight you wanted the tension on the throttle. I wish I had realized this a few years ago. Doesn’t hurt to read the manuals a few times I guess.

Thanks, I think I saw that too when I was checking them out. I’ll say thanks again for helping me previously getting my motor fixed. I almost pm’d you asking this question. I figured you’d have some good ideas. I had a friend suggest that I try the throttle tension control and see if that’d hold the throttle in place. Have you ever heard of that working?

There’s some open water in front of Franz Jevne but lots of shore ice. Only ramps that are open are up by International Falls.

In Iowa you are suppose to pull the drain plug when leaving the water. I pull mine at the ramp and the incline usually drains any water out. If that doesn’t do the trick the ride home usually gets the rest out.

I have the Savage 220 with this scope. Love this combination. Like was mentioned earlier it’s a fairly flat shooting slug gun. Where I hunt shots won’t be over 150 yards so put the cross hairs where you want and you’re good to go.

I have the Savage 212 and I went with a Leopold slug scope also.

Saw this on Twitter and it made me laugh.

Jan 6: Fleck: Row the Boat

Minnesotans: Got two of ’em over by Mille Lacs. You?

    Fleck: That’s not what I …

Minnesotans: No motor on it, eh?

Hopefully this is my final update on my Mercury 40 4-stroke. After breaking off the sensor again I ordered a thread cleaning tap from Snap-On. I couldn’t get the tap started but I noticed I had some clean threads on the back side of the exhaust cover. After removing the cover I was able to clean the threads out with the tap and install a new temp. sensor. Glad I did that as there was quit a bit of debris in chamber that could have caused more problems. As I was reinstalling the 10 bolts using my torque wrench (which is no small feat) I snapped off a bolt. I ended up snapping off a 2nd bolt in the process. Looks like my torque wrench was not acting properly. I removed the cover again and extracted the two broken off bolts (once again, no small feat). I decided then to order 10 new bolts, 2 new gaskets. I’ve learned over this process if you’re replacing one part you should replace all the parts around that area. I hooked up the motor to a hose to back flush again. After that I hooked up the muffs and ran for 20-30 minutes with no issue. Of course running it on muffs doesn’t really tell you much until you put it under a load I’ve learned. I fished yesterday with no issue. I trolled for several hours with the big motor and all sounded and looked fine. I wasn’t able to run it wide open like I had planned as some wx came in and we got off the water.

Thanks for all the reply’s this site is a true resource. Thanks Iowaboy1 your last bit of information helped me diagnose the problem. Bad heat sensor.

Update on my ongoing issue. I ordered a new heat sensor and attempted to install it Friday after work. The old sensor came out with no problem. Tried screwing in the new sensor and I couldn’t get it threaded. I was being deliberate and taking my time. After several attempts with no luck I got the old sensor and screwed it back in by hand. I tried unscrewing it by hand and no luck so I grabbed my open ended wrench and lightly turned it and and that’s when my 5 minute job turned into a nightmare. The sensor broke off in the hole. I tried using a screw extractor but it just ate up the plastic. So today I bought some brushes and gently cleaned out the threads. I talked to a friend of mine who’s more mechanical than I and we both thought if we got a 10mm bolt (that’s the size thread on the sensor) we could slowly work this in and clean as we went. Turn it by hand and then a 1/4 turn with wrench, screw back out, clean hole with shopvac, repeat. We did this until we thought we had enough room to install the new sensor. It worked great until we had to turn it with a wrench for that final last 1/2 turn and snap… it broke off again. Do I try the same method again and just go farther with the bolt or do I try to re-tap the threads? I just wanna go fishn’…

I got the broken vent cover unscrewed. I took the screws out of the metal housing that the gas line attaches to. This allowed me to unscrew the pipe clamps and lift off the whole unit exposing the 90° vent. I was able to get a small vice grip on the broken piece and hold the 90° with my hand and unscrew it. I’ll head to Dave’s Marine tomorrow and get a couple of those threaded vent caps so next time I have hard landing I’ll have a spare. Now to get the engine running right. That’s another thread that I’ve started on here but the end is in sight… I hope. Thanks all for the reply’s, this site is great!

That sounds very similar to what mine had done. Hard to describe the parts without knowing the correct terminology. Basically my vent had broke off flush with the boat. The threads from the portion that cap attaches to were still in the valve inside the boat. I was able to screw out the old threaded portion. All I had to do then was screw in the new part with the cap. The part was sent UPS from a marine supply outlet vendor in Ankeny. Don’t know the name. Supposedly only sells to businesses. I’m assuming you’re from Des Moines. Should be able to go to any boat place in the area and probably find your part. Bright wells, Bass Pro, or Dave’s Marine are a few I would check with. Good Luck

Thanks, I’ve actually been in that warehouse. I work in video production and we had a shoot in there a couple of years ago. They’re strictly distribution.

What did you use to unscrew the broken off vent? I didn’t see anything I could get a wrench on.

I’ll bet you only need the outside clip on cap, quick and easy, low cost from a boat shop anywhere, and no hassle.

I sheared off the whole vent flush with the boat. It looks like I need to replace the whole unit not just the cap. Thanks for the link!
