We had one of the poorest openers that I can ever remember. Two wood ducks and two teal for four guys. I’m not sure I even saw a mallard. Hunting southern Murray county.
Just ordered a set of the General Grabber ATXs today. Had Falken Wildpeak ATs on my Ford F150 and got 21k on them and they were done. Maybe half the miles on gravel but not run hard at all. Lots of good reviews on them but not from me. Hoping for better performance from the Grabbers.
Shot these guys this morning. Thought we had eighteen for three guys but miscounted and ended up one short.
We got nine bluewings for four of us. Didn’t see near the amount of teal as we have the past two years. The other three members of our party went dove hunting and had forty five by 9:30.
Wait til dusk and carefully cinch it down to the size of the nozzle of your leaf blower and hit it full force with air while spraying it with wasp spray alongside the nozzle at the same time. Wearing your ice suit would be a good idea too.
I have had 5.96” from about noon Thursday until 5:30 a.m. this morning.Been up since 1:00 a.m. with three pumps running in the basement to keep my furnace and water heater safe. Possibly a lot more coming tonight. A very bad time to be a newly hatched pheasant or turkey down in the Worthington area.
My season starts tomorrow. Got a couple of guys that I will be hunting with that we will try to get their birds first. I like if you don’t get one this season it just rolls into the last season.
Thanks everybody for your answers. What I am seeing if you really want to know for sure that you should probably ask you local CO. Hate to imagine getting tagged for dropping a waxworm or minnow tail down the hole or even on the ice for that matter but you never know.
Back in the day when Floyd Ragan was the game warden in the Slayton area he was on record as saying he shot every cat he could if more than a quarter mile from the nearest farm.
It may be the day drinking but that was pretty dang funny Riverrat.
Nieka and I will be. Shot a rooster that flew over the blind this morning.
Our group will be going out. Going to be breezy but hopefully most of the rain will be done in the Worthington area. The crops are coming out fast. Real fast. Something to keep in mind is the amount of CRP,buffer strips, waterways, and even Walk-in-Areas that have been mowed and baled after being allowed to because of the drought. Most I have ever seen in my lifetime.
We were out Saturday and Sunday and I would say the hunting wasn’t too bad considering our two best spots are bone dry.Mostly bluewings and a few wood ducks. Did not see many mallards at all. Hunting pressure wasn’t too bad considering the lack of water in southwest Minnesota. My sixtieth straight opener so happy to still be able to get out.
Three of us shot 10 teal and a goose on Saturday. Was kind of disappointed because on Thursday there were a pile of teal on the slough we were hunting and Saturday only a fraction showed up. I not too sure that they didn’t go back north a ways to better water conditions from what I am hearing.
We will definitely be doing the early teal hunt. The slough we usually hunt is pretty much bone dry but there are a couple of other options. Will do some serious scouting this week to pin something down.
Sorry about your pup Glenn. I once heard a saying that went “the first day you bring your pup home is the first day to eventual heartbreak”. It sure is but still worth it.
It’s looking good down here in the Worthington area. Weather has been perfect for hatching. No cold rains no storms. I have been seeing some broods lately since they have been mowing ditches and waterways. Everything from two thirds grown to just little peepers. Jeremy is right on with the grasshopper assessment. They are everywhere right now. Could use some rain like everyone else but I would say the hatch is looking a lot like last and last year was pretty dang good.
Came across this little darling while hunting mushrooms yesterday.
In the early nineties I received my dad’s two shotguns when he died. I let my younger brother and his son use them to duck hunt around Lake Fork in Texas. After a hunt he placed both of them on the roof of their car and put the rest of the gear in the trunk got in the car and drove away. When he got home no shotguns. He told me it explained why the guy following him on the highway had chances to pass him but never did. Not a lot of monetary value in those two guns but a lot of sentimental value. Still makes me grit my teeth to think of it.
Good job. You are going to have to put an extension on your Lil’ Heartbreaker to get all your scores on it.
The snows and blues were pouring through the Worthington area yesterday(Thursday). Even shot one that got pushed a little too close by his buddies. Not hunting with decoys just trying to be in the right place at the right time. Went out this morning and only saw honkers and specks. The light geese had moved on from the area.
Probably skip season A and start on season B. Give it time to melt some more snow and let the turkeys break up more from their winter groups. Certainly do like the change in regs that you don’t have to put in to a lottery to get the time slot you want and can pick a season dependent on the weather. Not counting a couple of WMAs where you still have to do the lottery.
