The Decoys and shotgun are gone…I do still have the Cabelas layout blind.
December 11, 2015 at 2:18 pm #1583934Sorry! I just sold it! Thank you for your interest though! I really appreciate it!
November 9, 2015 at 11:34 pm #1576260Good luck Wiener! Actually looking at accuweather, that’s about what I’m expecting for us in SD. Second week of December. Maybe Jack Frost will come through with his buddy Old Man Winter and bring us some ice making temps. I was on 5″ of ice last year at this time!
January 29, 2015 at 10:14 am #1504193I recently caught my very fist carp through the ice. We were fishing for perch in a shack and needless to say, he had to do some retying. She decided to make a few passes around the shack while coming in and created a tangled mess. Like I said, we were targeting perch with small Slender Spoons and Tingler spoons with small minnows. Sorry I don’t have any tips for targeting them specifically but I guess landing a couple on this rig says something. I also saw many carp laying on the ice, frozen and abandon.
January 19, 2015 at 5:45 am #1499332Well I guess I should have read allll the comments before posting my idea…Sorry Curleytail!!! But it makes a nice cheap hole insulator. Has anyone out there tried that alarm blutooth system for tip ups? I always see ads for them on Craigslist and what not. It would be pretty cool to just get a text or how ever it works when you have a fish on. Ahhh technology.
January 19, 2015 at 5:38 am #1499330I mostly use Beaver Dam tip ups. I had some scrap carpet, cut a slit with a small hole in the middle and that seems to work pretty well. In college, we had very small boat harbor off the main channel of the Mississippi that was just loaded with northern. We used to place tip ups in the open slips or where ever there was some empty water. We’d sit on the docks with a couple adult beverages and wait for flags in the open water season. It was a hoot.
January 16, 2015 at 12:47 pm #1498417I tried to use the aggressive technique and just absolutely no interest. I tried multiple sizes and colors, rattles and not rattles. I was having “luck” on about a 3/4″ light green or yellow willow type jig I bought off ebay a little while back. My rig was set up with a very small quick snap and the green willow leaf jig, and a small slip bobber. My small/medium minnow would get really excited when fish would show up on my flasher and then they would slowly take the bobber under. About half way down the ice hole (we had about 18″ of ice) and then I would lift the line just a bit to see my spring bobber bend a bit and set the hook. Pretty much all in one motion and nothing. There would be slight resistance right away and the jig came up empty. I was thinking that the perch were just sucking on the head of my minnow and slowly moving away? Needless to say, I switch to that Slender Spoon and the treble hook seemed to help me capitalize more often. Overall, a productive day but really makes a guy go back to the books trying to figure out how to increase my hook up ratio! What a fun sport! I just love this crap!
January 3, 2015 at 11:22 pm #1491681You should look on a map for McNally Boat Landing. I haven’t fished that area for al ittle while. I graduated from WSU December 2012. We used to fish early ice in that bay an absolutly slaughter pike and large blue gills. I remember one day we went through about 8 dozen suckers. We caught so many nice pike it was a blast. There were times when we had 3 or 4 flags up at a time. The largest one that day went 40″ and about 20 lbs. It was an absolute giant. You’ll aslo get your fair share of largies too. I remember having the best luck right along the shore line close to the boat landing. A little farthr down the dike raod, there is another harbor called Minnesota City Boat Harbor. There are a lot of pike roaming that area as well.
January 1, 2015 at 4:28 pm #1490817The bite at Whitewood is tough. The lake has very minimal cover or topography changes. I caught every single fish on a long slender “willow” jig in yellow or green. I hooked a small minnow through the dorsal and let it sit an inch or two off the bottom. They come in schools every half hour 45 min. It also was a really soft bite. Spring bobber or a noddle rod is a must! They are pigs though. I kept thinking I’d pack it up and then another jumbo decided to hit. We kept 20 over the two days I was there and they were all 12-14″ and one that hit 14 1/2″ It was a rush!! I also caught my first carp through the ice here. It was a great fight on my ultra light with 2lb Nanofil!
January 1, 2015 at 3:39 pm #1490805I purchased a few packs of the Fas-snaps in small and mediums. I did put them on all my rods because I am new to most of the lakes in SE SD and end up trying many different jigs/spoons in all colors. Once my fingers get a little cold, it’s dang near impossible to tie with such a thin line (2 lb Nanofil and 5 lb Suffix 832). I haven’t been out to see if the fish dislike this strategy or not. I tied the smalls with a very small Tungsten Tubby Jig. Has anyone noticed if this interferes with the bite. I’m sure there are a million different situations such as a light finicky bite might be better direct to line while a very aggressive bit, a snap would be just fine. Any input would be greatly appreciated!
December 10, 2014 at 10:07 pm #1482494Fished SE South Dakota and got into some nice perch today…Come visit SD!

December 5, 2014 at 1:13 am #1480280I’m going to try for some South Dakota glacial lakes jumbo perch. I hear they are pretty hot right now. I hope I get some picture worthy fish to post!! Good luck to alL!
December 3, 2014 at 1:23 am #1479320They did a great job with that show. I was very jealous of their day! I’d love to get out on a body of water where they are and maybe learn some tips first had..
December 1, 2014 at 10:02 am #1478422My very first unit was a Lx3. I sold and traded of many units to find my favorite. I didn’t really get a chance to try the upper end units. I have been on a college student budget for quite some time. I may have even spend some of my student loan money on a flasher. I’ll be paying that one off for the next 10 years! I am back to my very first flasher. The Marcum LX3tc and couldn’t be happier. I would like to get my hands on an LX7 but my time will come.
December 1, 2014 at 9:52 am #1478410I really haven’t been ice fishing for walleyes to long but what I have found is I can’t go without the Gulp Alive Minnow Heads especially in Glow Red. I really haven’t noticed that the spoon color matters as long as I have a red head. I usually pair it with a gold slender spoon or tingler spoon and have really good luck.
December 1, 2014 at 9:41 am #1478408I’m sitting here this morning with a steaming hot bowl of my homemade chicken wild rice soup watching this episode filmed just a short couple hour drive my my home. I can’t hardly handle this! Your show ALWAYS gets my blood going! If I didn’t have to go to work this afternoon, I’d be making my way north to catch some of the slabzillas you guys are catching! Great work again this week, looking forward to more episodes!!
November 26, 2014 at 10:09 am #1477189I really got into fishing finesse plastics last winter and was impressed by how well they perform. I was always keeping up with live bait, most of the time doing better. It was great when my buddy sitting right next to me trying spikes and waxies wasn’t catching anything and I was having to put new plastics on every 15 min because the fish were hitting so hard! I had a crappie hit a red mayfly nymph so hard it took the rod right out of my hand. I didn’t see it on my flasher and wasnt ready, WHAM! I always have Impulse Stonefly or Mayfly nymphs and usually red was my color. Otherwise, I like the Trigger-X mustache worms in red, white, glow, and pink. The last plastic that I can’t seem to go without is the red tails on the Custom Jigs & Spins Ratso or Shrimpo. I would slowly lower it below the ice to the bottom and most of the time the fish comes of the bottom so fast you don’t get more than a foot or so down.
November 25, 2014 at 6:18 pm #1477008I love fishing with braid specifically Suffix 832 in Neon Lime or Ghost. I love that there’s no memory and the sensitivity. I love how thin braid is as compared to the similar weight of other styles of fishing line. The one thing that does bother me is that braid does soak up water and freeze. On the other hand, if it’s that frigid cold, I usually utilize my ice shack and Mr. Buddy Heater. Most commonly, 4 lb Suffix 832 with about a 12″-14″ Flouro leader is my bread and butter. For my pannies I like a 2-3 lb Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon and for walleye, I use 6-8 lb with the same Trilene. I really don’t know if that’s exactly “right” but it seems to work well for my style.
November 23, 2014 at 8:47 pm #1476214I am freshly out of college and pretty much all my money goes to pay that off. I bought a 13 Fishing White out and love it! I bought it as the combo and just left that reel on. I used green Suffix 832 in 6 lb test and then I tie a fluorocarbon leader. I believe the one I have is a 28″ medium or medium light I can’t remember. I’d love to get my hands on a higher end rod but with a wedding in Mexico in a few months and preparing for a reception back in Sioux Falls doesn’t leave me much extra at the end of the month otherwise I’d look into it more! I am interested what others are going to say about this thread. Maybe I’ll get the fiance to buy me an early Christmas present
November 22, 2014 at 3:31 pm #1475818Thank you for the input! It really gets me excited to trying a new unit. I have had my eye on the 7 for quite some time now so I think that will be the winner! Alex, I’ll let you know when/if I make the switch this year! I’d sure like to but with a wedding coming up in Feb., I need to spend my money on other things than fun toys for me right at this moment….or do I?
November 18, 2014 at 1:48 am #1474348That’s a great idea! I wonder if there is anyway I could do that with my Eskimo Quickfish? Hmmmm…
November 16, 2014 at 11:45 am #1473783I was just reading on another Forum. A lot of the lakes in the Brookings area have 3.5″ of ice! http://forum.dakotaangler.com/discussion/2171/frozen-lakes-and-ice-thickness#Item_4
November 15, 2014 at 2:29 pm #1473610I stopped in Dakota Angler today after checking some ice myself. We had a report of about 4″ at Waubay this morning. I had 2 1/2″ at a pond right in Sioux Falls and about 4″-5″ around the Hartford SD area.
