Half of the shacks on the pond don’t even have holes in the floors for fishing, Its more of an ice social community. The pond has northern, bass, gills, crappie and perch. Fishing has really declined the last few years. A couple years ago, we (the Frontenac sportsman’s club) placed C&R signs encouraging catch and release. This years fishing contest we hosted in Feb did pretty well for fish entered. Slowly but surely the pond is healthier than years past prior to posting C&R signage.

How flexible is it.. Can you still ball it up and stow it underneath the powerhead and close the flaps?

No fish expert but length of days plays into when a fish knows its time to get it on.

The starting technique I described earlier is right from strikemaster on starting it. When I first bought mine I thought I got a lemon so I stopped by their shop in Big lake. Mechanic guy showed me the throttle feathering technique and every since then I haven’t had an issue starting. Prior to stopping in, starting would take forever. If my memory serves me, I want to say it has to do with the way they are jetted to handle a broad spectrum of extreme temperature ranges with a four stroke.
You are right about starting on warm days with no feathering.

Your carb is just fine…it just boils down to, like someone stated earlier, every engine is a little different. I’ve had mine since strikemaster first introduced the strikelite 4 stroke and couldn’t be happier with it. I’ve punched thousands of holes with it and not once has it failed me and sent me home early because of auger problems.

I have to feather the throttle on my Strike lite first generation. Just something I got used to doing over the years. I don’t even think about it anymore it just second nature.

I don’t pump the ball at all.
Put it in the choke position
Usually 3 pulls and it starts
I then shut the choke off and let it warm up as I’m setting the shack up.
I also run non-oxy fuel with a splash of Neutra.

One other tip….when your popping your second hole —thow your shovel over your open hole when drilling #2, it’ll save you a bunch of time with the ice skim.

I fish alone alot and not having an extra hand to pull the ducer, drilling an second hole became habbit for me.
Years ago I hooked into a big fish, right out of the gate he ran and wrapped my ducer cord up in the line. The cord ended up getting severed and that darn fish cost me $100 for a new ducer.
So long story short…yeah every time if I’m in the flip over….hole hopping I’m close enough to the hole to quickly yank it.

I put bottom of the ducer flush or slightly below with bottom of the ice.

I bet I can guess who provided you the disaster….

If I were to stay on the ice I would check out JR’s. I haven’t personally stayed with JR’s but talking with his crew they appear to be dedicated to putting their clients on fish. I was just there using his roads and he was more than helpful pointing out a hot bite.

I am a Marcum guy but my loaylity can be purswaded. I’ve owend the LX3, LX5 and currently own a LX7. After hearing the Hummingbird sales pitch at the Ice show about the Helix chirp 7 I ended up buying one to see if it lived up to the hype. FF ran a sale on it and I got it for a really good price.

After a month of solid use, the helix is a decent unit but it is now my backup unit to my LX7. I went into using the Bird with an open mind and to see if I would be a Hummingbird guy at the end of the season. Don’t get me wrong there are some features that are nice on the bird but the Marcum is a superior unit when it comes down to the flasher marking side of fishing. For location and GPS, the bird stands alone and is awesome. For someone that wants a combination of a flasher and GPS-lakemap combo the Helix can save a guy some money.
The hummingbird isn’t for sale, but will be my backup unit and on the boat in the summer.

    Happy hooking!!!

    Hey Skol,

What do you mean by the “save” feature on your LX-7?
    How does that feature work?

Once you get your unit all dailed in on the settings you like, you are able to “Save” your settings so that next time you turn your unit on there is no adjustment it goes straight to your configuration the last time you used it.
Ex: Screen brightness, screen configuration, zoom window, zoom depth, IR, ect. Esentially you are all set after a power down.

    Hopefully that helps….Happy hooking!

My Fusion just arrived by ups today. I first seen the fusion at the ice-show and thought it would be perfect for my walleye dead stick rod.
What were the thoughts or vision for the fusion when this rod was created? It felt like it would have enough sensativity in the tip for seeing a light bite but enough backbone to bury a hook at 30 feet.

I’ve owned a LX3, LX5, and currently have had a LX7 since its release. At the begining of this season I bought the Helix 7 Chirp as something to try out. Over the winter when picking which flasher I’m going to take out for the day I keep going back to the LX-7.
I prefer the target seperation way better on the Marcum over the bird. I also like the simplicity in setting up. The bird takes alot of monkeying around to get it dailed in vs the Marcum with it save feature. The biggest reason I like the Marcum over the bird is the verticle zoom when fishing deeper water. The bird has zoom but from what I found it only zooms on the graph. The last thing which tips the scales for Marcum is the target seperation and the transducer offset. I love being able to hide the bottom readout and using all that space for fish and my lure.
The bird is my backup or unit when friends join me.

    Happy hooking!!!
