I always anchor mine with screw in anchors and chains. I had mine blow off the blocks.
I live on a lake and am retired. I have a 6×12 skid and wish it was a little larger. It’s great for 2 people. My dogs go and are off the ice and dry, so not cold. Mine is unfinished inside so I just use a buddy heater, crack a window and have a small fan. It’s way easier than using a hub. I lock it and leave when I’m done, I don’t have to take it down. I’m fishing 5 min after I get out to it. It can easily be moved with a small ATV with chains. I have a tracked ranger and move it easily when there’s more snow. You would have no problem moving it with a snowmobile. I always put mine up on blocks, back up to it, hook up and pull it away. I always chisel my blocks out when I leave. I also have a hub and two pop ups. I am way more comfy in my skid house. I usually take it out when I feel comfortable driving my ranger on the ice. I don’t sleep in mine. I’m not sure it would be big enough. I don’t want fish bothering me when I’m trying to sleep.
I had back pain years ago. At times it was very severe. The most comfortable place to sit when the pain was bad was my pickup. It was hard to get into at the time. If you have multi adjustable power seats with lumbar support and heat, I can’t imagine anything better. Sometimes minor adjustments like tilting the back a couple degrees makes a world of difference. Good luck with your pain, nothing is more miserable than bad back pain.
This is a great thread. Now I know who the really good people on this forum are! Springer owners. This is not any judgement on non springer owners. They may be good people as well!
Isn’t it about time for that bear to start hibernating? Glad it went well for all, including the bear.
With this warm weather, the deer ticks are terrible. They are having a banner year.
Dogs always live up to their names. She had a great name, I’m sure she was a great dog. Love the pictures too. I’m sure you gave her the best life she could have had with no regrets. None of that makes it any easier to loose a beloved dog. Sorry about your loss.
Bear smash burgers. Cooked in rendered bear fat on the Blackstone.
I can’t get the espalier link to load but when I said I’m growing mine on wires, that’s how I’m growing mine. It takes a lot of work to prune them.
I have 15 apple trees planted for deer. They start dropping apples in early Sept and continue until late October. They require watering for several years until established. They require fencing when young too. If a leaf sticks out through the fence, it gets eaten by deer. I had two apple trees that came with my land, twice a bear climbed them, clawed them up, broke branches and ate all the apples.
I have 30 dwarf trees for me inside a fence. They are growing on wires. You get apples sooner than full sized trees, more fruit but they require more work training and pruning. I grow zestar, honey crisp and snow sweet. If you are in the southern part of the state , you have more choices on types, than in the north. You want 1 pollinator tree per 5 trees if you want apples. My trees are 1 mile or more from other apple trees so I don’t have pests or need to spray for insects. Bare root trees are planted in the spring. Irrigation is a must.
Now vet medicine is similar to human medicine. That’s doesn’t make it any less frustrating.
I bought my land 12 years ago and according to the county, my value has nearly tripled. 80 acres and a log cabin. My lake home has nearly doubled in the 4.5 years I’ve owned it. Yes, I think the market is still hot. There’s been 4-5 homes on the market on our lake. They sell above asking price and they sell quickly too.
A cub trying to join my nephew in the ladder stand while bear hunting.
Let me also say baiting can get expensive. I was spending about $40 a day. I got bait from a bear bait retailer so about as cheap as you can get.
Brian,
No quota is hit or miss. It’s not in the bear’s range or where the state thinks bears should be. I just had probably 10-15 different bears hitting my bait. You may get 1 or at best 2 in the non quota area. You may also not see a bear.
Bear hunting, if you want to be successful is not a week end ordeal. If you get bears coming, you need to bait every day. You also need to work on timing so they aren’t just coming at night and eating all your bait. You can’t possibly do this stuff with a 3 or more hour drive each way and be successful. In a good zone in MN it will take you 6-7 years to draw a tag. I think the baiting is the hunt, not the sitting in a tree and shooting a bear that walks by. Baiting is a lot of work and takes up 3 weeks of your time if you do it right. Sporadic bait placement will probably not get you a bear. It would be like hunting over my neighbors’s trash can. A bear might come in. If you can’t commit to 3 weeks of baiting, you need an outfitter. Also non resident baiting rules are different.
That’s a nice bear Waldo, congrats! My nephew got his bear and I got the sight cleaned up. It’s time to get the deer back. I haven’t seen a deer on my property since I started baiting bears. Archery season is only 2 weeks away. Emily Meats was rocking on Sunday night. I think they are one of the few businesses that process bear meat.
It have lived on bodies of water my whole working life. Yes, I’m lucky. I’ve seen my docks twisted and nearly carried away by wakes. I’ve seen my shoreline erode. It of course erodes from weather too. I was unaware of the downward prop direction. It makes sense though. I did not imagine the loss of habitat in deeper water that the first video shows. With that knowledge, a solution to satisfy everyone who uses the water will be very difficult.
I may be able to help. Right now I’m baiting for my nephew and have some bears. He has limited time to hunt and should get one right away. I’m NW of Crosby. It’s on my land. I’ll think but PM me your contact information.
That’s a really good deal. I bought 80 acres of woods with a cabin 12 years ago. It was a great decision. My son loves going out there. We ended up moving 7 miles away from our cabin. Turkey, bear, deer and grouse hunting. Do I ever shoot a monster-no, but I spend lots of evenings in a tree.
Nvm, thought this was another NFC North post. In this situation, the Bears Don’t suck. I’ll be more careful if I see anything about a Lion season.
We do occasionally discuss outdoor things like hunting and fishing on this board.
I was surprised by the amount of leftover tags. Wait up to 7 years and then don’t buy your license? There was 51 in my zone 45. I did not get one. Did anyone get a leftover?
DNR says new info to be released tomorrow. Are you sure you didn’t look at 2023? I can’t believe they’d release it early.
I’d try and get some protective gear to wear and let em have it with wasp and hornet spray. Even putting on heavy clothing and gloves and head gear would help.
We have a patch of wild berries on our hunting land. No berries there whatsoever. It’s pretty shaded though. Our blueberry patch that I planted in our yard is just finishing up. Both properties are in the Brainerd area. And the bugs are terrible this year.

There’s a lot of bears and no acorns whatsoever in this area. Bears should be screaming to the bait. I’m looking forward to baiting.they started out like that last year hitting baits. i know a bear guide just north of Remer and they started out bears hitting baits big time….season game and they shut down.
Last year was a banner year for acorns. You could hardly go out without a hard hat.
