As a bass tournament fisherman who has fished mille lacs the new regs don’t change much for tournaments out there. it is still going to take a limit of largemouth to win out there. the protected slot for smallies is the size of fish a tournament angler is looking for. one fish over 20 inches is a little easier to do but to go with a bag of fish under 17 inches largies are still better. anyways, for fun mille lacs smallies are fun.
February 14, 2013 at 8:07 pm #1141906anyways,
venture in the Milfoil (which is not super dense) will be with a Dobyns 7’9″MedHvy Fast action stick…40# 832 Camo Braid on a Lew’s Super Duty reel. Starting with a 1 oz slip jig…I will adjust accordingly…that should be more than enough depending if you are fishing mats on top or just the stalks of foil that are under the surface. it may take some time to locate the fish, but it can be worth it.
personally i only go with a 7’6″ mh pithin stick with 20 lbs mono and have no problem breaking fish off or getting them out of the foil. i don’t usually fish the mats because of the depth were most of the mats are formed
March 7, 2012 at 5:47 pm #1047065for a setup i would go with any rod that is at least 7′ or longer and has to have at least a power of medium-heavy. when making longer casts i love to have a longer rod, but a 7′ mh seems to do ok. with line i would think that water clarity and cover dictate the lbs of line to use. i usually use at least a 14lbs for the main line. the carolina rig is a good backup to a football head jig. I like to use it out on hard spots or areas were there is sparser weed cover. the heavier the weight used the slower and more finesse a angler has to fish it. i drag it much like a football head unless the fish are suspended.
June 2, 2011 at 10:42 pm #970558i just installed an hds on my boat last week. the yellow wire is connected to the lss-1 yellow wire if you want it the lss to be powered when your hds turns on. the lss will not be powered unless the yellow wire on it is powered. other wise it needs to be connected to a switch.
there is a diagram with the structure scan info(lss-1).February 27, 2011 at 5:49 pm #941994i will second the old bps fritts reels except the 4.7:1 gearing. i like the slower speeds for deep cranking to slow down the speed of the crank to walk it along the bottom and not have to change my retrieve speed from a higher geared reel.
February 27, 2011 at 5:34 pm #941990the montage of screaming to start day 2 coverage was pretty ridicious. do you guys remember the old flw’s that showed mostly on the water coverage. that was cool.
January 20, 2011 at 8:58 pm #928449thanks for the replies. i thought the in-fish article about vertical jigging in cali was very interesting. i am always looking for new techniques, but here of this very little in natural lakes. i know in the lakes around by me the fish start to suspend at the first part of the fall of hard water extensions and i was looking for some more ideas. at some point the football head or roller rock jigs fish are not as willing to commit when the temps drop, but the fish are still there.
November 5, 2010 at 12:03 am #908046caught this on pool 2 when MikeW was fishing were we wanted to be. good choice he was there. 10lbs7oz
November 4, 2010 at 11:47 pm #908041awesome smallies. the average size on the rum and stcroix rivers have went with the water temps coming down, but nothing like that.
fantasticOctober 30, 2010 at 10:17 pm #907049i was out monday and friday. fishing was great with #’s and size. the water temp has finally come down to see a better average size. lake i was on 52-53 monday and 47-48 friday. for smallies i was out last weekend as well on a couple of rivers and the #’s had went down but the size average was up as well.
largies rattle trap on windy flats or draggin jigs on edge of remaining weeds.April 21, 2010 at 8:08 pm #865794i have been on chisago a few times and have not noticed anything like that.
March 18, 2010 at 1:19 am #854671i launched out of hidden falls today it was pretty easy. except i wasn’t ready for the back current. like mike said most of the mud, ice and big trees coming from minnesota river. some ice chunks on the miss up from the MN and some wood started coming later in pm. no fish to report
December 14, 2009 at 7:57 pm #823310nice call, the bite on chisago was a lot tougher than usual on sat.
December 11, 2009 at 6:05 pm #822638just drilled out at chisago and 2nd lake of forest lake and the ice was 6-7″. making a lot of ice quick not many people out yet.
December 9, 2009 at 2:26 am #821681tried the ice on 2nd lake of forest lake and it was 2″ by shore and 1 1/2″ farther out.
August 10, 2009 at 1:37 am #796346the launch on north center has been dredged out, but it is still tough to launch. just barely able to launch 20.5′ bass boat.
July 21, 2009 at 2:33 pm #791966there is a berm behind the loading hole at the n. center access. it you have a larger bunk trailer if you back in it will not float off it will start to move up the berm on the other side. possible for smaller boats. i would call or talk to mikes bait or frankies. mikes bait said on friday that boats were still launching at s.center but i have not looked. there was also a article in the star tribune on sunday of frankie calling on the dnr and saying he would dig out the ramps himself if they didn’t. the little green access is fine and the chisago access you have to back in a little bit but its not terrible.
there is a rv park on the south side of halzeltine bay on south center that has a ramp, but i don’t know how it works.
June 25, 2009 at 8:22 pm #786643i have been to the lake once and thought it was a good time. i wonder how long this lake will stay like it has been. i hope they keep the regs on chisago.
June 17, 2009 at 3:52 am #784503if you are just starting out i would use a 1 ounce jig because it has the best feel and you will know your going over the right stuff. so,far i only know of all-terrain to have a 1 ounce. i mostly use a 3/4 ounce and sometimes go with a 1/2. i like both the all-terrain and outkast jigs. they both use the same hooks except outkast also have a wide gap model. trailer is whatever you like.
June 11, 2009 at 9:49 am #783251with the water so shallow there wasn’t much of a inside weedline. caught all of our fish on outside weedlines one nice one about 3- 3 1/2 lbs. still need some time for them to get on the outside or they are buried up in the weeds.
wonder what is going to happen with the Frankies tourney with the water so low. tried to put in on n.center and couldn’t get the boat to float off. hopefully they won’t move it to forest. green should be alright thou.
March 11, 2009 at 8:02 pm #757471The last Bassmasters has a excellent article in it about this from tim horton.
