Mike W, say hi if ya see me (pic of my boat <<<)

So, I love this place and everyone’s been really nice, but it seems many guys read the subject and fire off a response without even looking at the actual post. So I’ll repeat the question jester :

How long will you typically stick with one presentation or location before you make some kind of change? — shorten the dropper, try a new color, try a new bait altogether, or pull anchor and try a new spot?

is pool 2 open for ‘eyes?

p2 is open year round for everything. catch & release only for most species including eyes/sauger, pike, and bass. since it’s C&R I don’t use much live bait on p2.

Pool 2 is open year-round, catch and release only, for large-mouth bass, small-mouth bass, walleye and sauger. “Unless otherwise specifically mentioned, all general regulations, seasons, limits, border water regulations, possession, and transportation regulations apply to these waters.”

Pretty good habitat back there for the bass with all that weed growth. It’ll be interesting to see if exposing that area to the usual silt and flow will remove that habitat. However, it sure would be nice not to have to run all the way around to get back there. I second the idea of getting that old launch open again.

I didn’t want to hear that about the Marina. On Sunday we went to the confluence to put lines out while we rigged up for some crappies in there. We never went because the action was good at the confluence (for cats). Bummer.

I (or anyone) can email the East Metro DNR office to get an answer about fishing in there. I don’t know how any water can be off limits. Was the sign about fishing from the docks?

The sign simply says, “No fishing in harbor”. I intended to contact the DNR but never got around to it with all the other spots I use. The sign is right on the fuel dock when you go in there.

Watergate is really a great spot for just about everything. Just curious, has anyone else ever run into trouble fishing in there? A crabby tenant there one year tried to convince me I couldn’t fish in there, but I stayed. Then on the way out I noticed the “No fishing in harbor” sign posted on the fuel dock. Now I’m not so sure.

No there’s nothing wrong with his hat. I too use AHAMAY motors exclusively.

I never did find out for sure. I heard that they got trapped up by the dam because of the shallow water. We saw this very early this spring when the ice was going out.

There are alot of muskies in this area. The shallow water is definitely the problem. Just this past spring, there were ALOT of dead fish up near the Coon Rapids dam, most of which were rough of course but, there were alot of good sized muskies and some MONSTER walleyes also.

I’ve always been interested in that downtown area. I just wish my boat could get to it faster, being that its in between launches. Anyway, I’ve caught walleyes right behind the bridge pilings there, and it seems like such an interesting spot with all the shallow structure on the south/west side, and all the deep water on the north/east side. One year I graphed 55-60 feet in the main channel there, with alot of large fish off to the side in slower water suspended, but nothing would bite. Wonder what they were?

AMEN!!!!! I was up on the bend just upstream from the Hwy 5 bridge and a yacht went by at about 20-30 mph. I have a 14 ft. Lund. Needless to say, if i didn’t quick start the motor and turn the nose into the waves coming at me, we would have been in the water for sure! Last thing i remember seeing is the girlfriend about 2 feet off the front seat!! And yes, the “dating” that occasionally goes on in the woods is pretty annoying when your trying to work a rip-rap shoreline.

I am relatively new to this website and don’t know any of you yet, but I visit daily and viewed many of Travis’ posts. I’m stunned. My heart goes out to Travis’ family and to all who knew him.

pressman…hog lake is also known as “little pigs eye”, or “north star steel” anyway if you were to travel straight into pigs eye lake via the pigs eye lake channel, (the one with all the barges)…you would take an immediate left(this lake is EXTREMELY shallow) once you entered pigs eye…keep traveling along the south shore of pigs eye and you will come across a little channel with some flow to it…this is the entrance to hog lake…i feel so “copy-cat” like ’cause steve dezurik said all of this before..but anyway, make your way in there, it gets to somewhere around 25-30 feet deep and there is probably every species you would ever want in there…………..just figure out how to catch ’em…it pulled the rest of my hair out…………..dooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood

for me it seems to be right now…..they’re going hard in hog lake right now(pool 2)…and there was a time last spring, i think this time of year actualy, they were spawning up at the ford dam off of the island in the slack water…..i could catch one on every cast….they are alot of fun

just checked the regs and yes it is legal to bowfish from a boat as long as it is powered by an electric motor….???…and as long as it is not a crossbow. the arrow must be attached to the bow with a line

i know that river lake and pigs eye lake in pool 2 can hit 68 degrees by mid may,(depending on weather of course) these areas are absolutely LOADED with carp by that time. if you cruise in there, you will see tons of wakes swimming away from your boat

    Steve,
I checked it out late last summer all the way back to where it dead-ends and was really intrigued by all the weed growth, the most weed growth on pool 2 as far as i am aware. I’m still in search of that pool 2 musky and thought the weeds and food in there might hold them, although by musky opener the water temp might be to high. I hope to get out there as soon as the ice is out to snoop around a bit.

I cant either. Last summer i saw a CHANNEL floating dead through downtown saint paul that was GIGANTIC. At first i thought it was a flathead, but i took a closer look and realized it was a channel. Scary

You’re right, it is catch and release in there being connected to the river. I saw a lot of promise back there for spring time with all the weeds that are there. When i was in there last summer, I could not believe the amount of fish (although mostly rough) that were back there. There were plenty i could not recognize.

Actually i guess i should have been more clear. The smaller fish was caught springtime 2002, i think May. The fatter one was caught in august 2002. Sorry for any misinformation. I just wanted to share the photos. The smaller fish was caught on a plain jig and minnow, the fatter one was caught on a sucker.
