I fish snags. I have several options.
3 way with a lead sinker, pencil sinker maintaining bottom or just bouncing. Tie a crank on the 3 way. Loose the weight not the cranks. Another option is a bottom bouncer.
Both are not stealth. I have caught eyes though.
Be aware that you will snag and loose. It comes with the sport. I agree a lure retreiver is a must. If you have several flat lines out it can be a goat rodeo getting the lines in. Free reeling line out on the snagged crank. Then making a 180 to de-snag your crank. On top you spook the fish.
    2 cents.

Went out today. Launched in Port Byron.
Fished wingdams on outside bends. To much current with river rising. finally ended up fishing break areas downstream from island adjacent to the channel. Went with lead jig only and worm combo. Did well. Caught about 12. My brother went shotgun. He did better than I. They liked this jig head color he made. Brown/dark green combination. I suppose it mimics crawdad. Ran out of crawlers. Image that!!
    Stay safe out there.

    Pretty tough but doable.

Used a lindy rig on the tip of wing dams while anchored.

Mainly saughers in the washout areas using 2-4 inch fatheads. Tried worms. They work but catching a number of channel cats and sheepies.

I have been fishing up north in SE Wisconsin.

It seems the time spent driving to SE WI compensates for the time spent doing very little on the Miss landing no fish.

I have been on the Miss River a total of 3 times this year.
I have only so much patience and daylight in the summer.
I decided to trailer my boat to Lake Michigan.
I have fished for Salmon, Yellow Perch and Walleye during my trips. The 3 hour ride is pretty well worth it when you bring home 25 pounds of Salmon fillet ($$$$).
I might try the river this Wed. the water is suppose to start falling.
I was thinking about slipping the boat in today (Sun.), but during my bike ride up the river I noted logs, garbage, the usual stuff. To err on the side of safety I scratched it.
To bad the weather has not been agreeable.

The Miss has been very tempermental this year. The water has been high or the air temp to hot.
I have some time off next week and will be making a road trip to Lake Michigan.
Have only been on the river 3 times this year. Not much to talk about.

I have success with 2 colors orange and chart.
Ring worm body, twister tails and paddle tails chart with silver flake, chart with green core. Another choice is black body with chart. tail.
I am going to give it a go this weekend. Will slip in at Sunset ramp on the Miss River or Marquette. Any advise?

Here is an update; I have been recieving quite a few emails and PM in regards to units locking up after or during the update and wanted to post this for everyone again.

All or at least all of the problems I have heard about during updates have been when users have inserted the SD card prior to Powering on the Unit. I have this problem on my 997c, it will not take an update if I put the SD card in first.

The Official Humminbird Website says to Power On the Unit, then Insert the SD Card!
    http://www.humminbird.com/support/FAQ.aspx?faqid=35

After you have Restored the Factory Defaults, just insert the SD card and the unit will begin the update. You can power it down and back on again if you want, but wait until it is completely booted up before sticking the SD card in the slot.

A lot of older material says to insert the SD card before you power on. This will work with most units, but I highly recommend you do not use this method! This is how the original updates were done, and it was later changed.

What software version? 4.75? is this with si.

Did you restore defaults prior to upload?

Are you using the right sd card reader (bay)?

    Do you have power?

Is the dc cord pluged in the correct accessory bus?

Your certain the update is on the sd?

In this cold weather the temperature is cool enough where you can use a cooler with river water. This weekend there calling for a high of 35 – 37. That is close to freezing.
I would not use the pumps as was mentioned because water expands when it freezes. Can crack the plastic pump, plumbing.
    Carry some jumper cables.

Slipped in at Sunset Sunday. Could not Saturday – committments!
On the water at 0800. Marked fish in Potter’s Lake just before exiting. I fished for about 15 minutes figuring they were bait fish. Alot of nibbles. Well, wherever there are the baitfish – there you will find the predators. Did not score.
Fished the wingdams. Set up around the 280 bridge. Ran planer boards with Storm Jr. Thundersticks. One glass with purple back the other orange back with yellow belly. One sauger hit the purple Jr. Hit on the outside edge of a wingdam near the channel over a washed out hole.
Jigged with 1/2 ounce tipped with a 3 inch Berk emerald shiner, then chart/white. Notta. Tried ring worm in chart with a paddle(Charlie Brewer Sliders). Nope. Three way rigged with Yum sassy shads; black back with glitter, chart and black, blue/white/orange – notta.
Spent about 4 hours on the water.
Still was successful because I learned something.
    Will be out next weekend.

    slip drift?
When you fish in a river with current you can allow your boat to “drift” with the current. For example. If the current is 6 mph the boat will drift with the current at 6 mph barring heavy winds. However when you slip drift you incorporate a bow mount electric trolling motor. It works like this. Again if the current is 6 mph you engage your electric trol. motor power to the setting needed to not drift with the current but less than the current.
For examply if the current is 6 mph you would drift at say 2-4 or 3-5 mph. This way you suspend over a spot, fish it thouroughly reduce your power setting drift find anothe area, increase your power setting to suspend fish, etc.
This works well but requires multitasking. Watching the electronics, jigging, varing the power setting. If that is to complex do it the old fashioned way anchor, slip line, secure the line, jig, slip line, secure the line, jig.
    Hope that helps.

    Sure can.
Last weekend went out from Sunset. Went to the Slough, what a zoo. Opted to go downriver. Fished outside bend wingdams adjacent to either deep water, sloughs, bays. I think the eyes and saugs are preparing for winter quarters in the back bay areas, sand, gravel and clam beds (J. Pitlo, 1993 Survey).
Essentially trolled up staying in contact with the bottom.
Slip drifted 1- 3 foot of the bottom on the slip drift.
Most success was on the slip drift on the upside between 1 -3 feet.
Worked the upriver with three way and cranks on the edge of the wings. Slip drifted downriver with electric bow over the dams. Worked the upside of the wings also. Mainly used roundheads in chart, orange and gold. Tipped with Berk Gulp in 3 inch emerald shiners and chart/white minnows.
Caught a total mix of 10.
Caught 3 saugers. One on a crankbait, Reef Runner in orange back with yellow belly. Hitting bottom. My Humminbird showed fish tight to the bottom during the troll adjacent to the wind and channel and alot of active fish mid depth on the slip away from the channel edge. Two on jigs all on the upriver side of the wings. Caught 7 eyes. 2 were caught on the 3 way Dubuque rig. Chart 3/8 topside of 3 way was a hook and Berk Gulp emerald shiner. 2 were caught on flatlines. 3 were caught on slip drifted. Chart and orange was the jig color. Slip drift fish were in mid depth.
Just not enough time in the day. Glad the shortest day of the year is 3 wks away. Hope we have a mild winter. Really do not want to put the boat on jacks quite yet.
I have a snafu today. Might not be able to go out Sat more than likely on Sunday.
    Will advise.
Do you guy monitor or modulate on a vhf channel?
When I fish on Lake Michigan they do. Just wondering. It is like a big family on the water there. I tried some of the fishing club scenes. Did like a few! Quad City In-Fisherman has some pretty good speakers and yearly outings.
As always keep your line wet and tight.
    Out.

    Todd,
Do you run a full core, half or several lenghts?
I do not run lead core on the Muddy, on Lake Michigan I do.
On the Muddy I run crawler harness(50 feet, snap wt, 50 feet, then planar)
I run cranks on snaps either 1/2, 3/4, 1 ounce 20 feet in front of the crank.
I use the Troller’s Bible by Mark Romanack.
    Take care neighbor.
I’ll let you know how I fair.

    Todd,
Nice report. Jointed Perch #5SR? How far back? Did you flatline or use planars? I have used planar with good success on the wingdams.
I have tried #7 SR, do not do well with them.
Are you spooled with mono or braid, 10 lb?
Where do you slip in at?
I plan to get out this Thursday early afternoon. Will slip in at Sunset. Will try the wingdams adjacent to the channel or deep water, and points or islands near wingdams and deep water. I have a feeling the walleyes will get into their summer mode.
    Will give a report.
    Keep a tight line.

    Todd,
Say we are practically neighbors. I live in Moline.
I slip in at Sunset mainly. Occasionally in Albany and Thompson.
I hear that pool 14 is on fire.
I will give 15 a try Tue or Wed. The Miss’s (river that is) is a little angry with all that rain. I will let her calm down.
Again, that was a nice fish.
    Later.

    Curt,
    What cranks were you using?
I fish the Miss in the Quad Cities and have success with planers. Never tried core though.
    Nice pics
