You will want the lower gear ratio to help pull them in. I like to use a line counter on my sturgeon, catfish, and musky sucker rods. It is a lot of fun to count how far they run and it is an accurate way to tell your buddy to put his beer down and grab the net.

You could always rent one and see if you like it before spending the money to buy and find out it’s not for you.
Since this is along the line of this thread: Any good place to rent one that has a larger daily millage cap? Our RV gets 4-6 MPH and the camper vans we looked at claim 22-26. We would like to rent one and drive to visit family in Texas. Any recommendations of places? I saw many people offering to rent their camper van like a VRBO. But limit to 50 miles a day. So if you rent for 4 days you can do a total of 200 miles for the trip.
February 4, 2025 at 7:02 am #2315060I had x4 5-gallon buckets. Over 10 years it is now down to 2 since I sorted 2 of them. I have been wanting to do the other two for just as long. I just have too many other important things that I would rather do / finish. (like fish) I have one of those nut and bolt thread checkers that one would find at the hardware store and found an old dentist tool cabinet that is fully stocked and organized. Having a well stock parts area is so nice. I have been slowly getting rid of “useful” stuff that I have finally admitted I will never use. It always seems like a week or month after I tossed it, I find something I could have used it for.
January 27, 2025 at 7:23 am #2313125I believe the trick is to make your lure dance without it moving much up and down in the water column. (especially with a jig and minnow head) One of the first things I do with a new bait is tie it on and jig it a couple of inches in the water and see what the jig will do with the line / rod combo I am using. I found this dance is controlled by the tapper of the blank 2” from the tip to ~10” and the way the blanks loads.
January 27, 2025 at 7:02 am #2313122I fell for the scent spray. That oil made the bucktails a stiff blob and every bucktail touching the one you sprayed was trashed when you put them next to each other in the tackle box.
January 23, 2025 at 1:52 pm #2312538We can’t compare deer to fish. For one, the insurance companies push to reduce the number of deer in an area. It is hard to hit a fish with your truck unless your truck goes through the ice first.
January 9, 2025 at 10:26 am #2309636Fish lip grippers work great for getting toothy fish out of the hole and your hands scar free. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Entsport-Gripper-Professional-Stainless-Grabber/dp/B01C7BTT6U/ref=asc_df_B01C7BTT6U?mcid=fe7c644424223c3fa9390d9bf136294f&hvocijid=8859150590183260618-B01C7BTT6U-&hvexpln=73&tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=721245378154&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=8859150590183260618&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9019498&hvtargid=pla-2281435179738&psc=1
I also like to use them for tullibee so my hands don’t stink.
December 3, 2024 at 8:27 am #2302714Well said Sheldon. I have heard many people when I was younger complain about shop rates. Lots of people forget about the overhead and how much is invested in tools just to do the work. It does add up fast when you are talking $100+ an hour for shop rates. Sheldon forgot to add in the cost of personal insurance for the employees and other insurance. There is a lot of overhead that needs to be paid out of that hourly rate. Do you tip your mechanic when you settle your bill with them? If the book says 4 hours and they are good and can do it in 3 hours. That’s their tip for having the knowledge and knowing tricks to do it faster. If mechanic A took twice as long as mechanic B. Would you be ok with paying twice as much? I also don’t think they would charge you the full flat rate of say 10 hour book time if they did it in 2 hours. That’s where having a mechanic you trust comes in.
November 4, 2024 at 7:54 am #2297288How long is the recovery time for something like this and are you able to stay off it that long?
Wish you the best.
October 21, 2024 at 12:00 pm #2295056One part of this bill I don’t understand is why does this bill have to form a new community that receive $25 million a year?
September 27, 2024 at 6:59 am #2290956does anyone else use or make this type of holder?
I have multiple rod holders on my boat. Some are pvc and in the boat deck, some are composite Ram, some are steel tube, and some are the down east ones that clamp to the side of the boat.
September 23, 2024 at 2:12 pm #2290540I noticed Eelpout has one. Mabey he will chime in on what one he has and his thoughts.
September 19, 2024 at 10:37 am #2289960I went and tried the string trimmer this year because I was tired of loading the head on the one I had. After two weeks I gave my Toro Pro trimmer away and never thought about it twice. Like Grouse said, more than enough power and the battery still has juice after I am done. I picked up one of the leaf blowers a couple of years ago. I use it a lot to blow out the shop, driveway, deck, and my wife will also use it. She would not touch the gas backpack leaf blower. The run time is just not long enough to take care of the fall leaves. It works great at blowing out the rain gutters and everything else through out the year.
September 19, 2024 at 8:35 am #2289921Orange is the 32” walleye snare and blue is TUCR dead stick. Sorry I don’t have the Panfish snare recorded. The walleye snare and panfish snare use different trip wires. It is easy to see from the picture why I always thought the TUCR dead stick was way too heavy. The TUCR is a solid fiberglass blank and the JT has a glass tip and carbon butt. The carbon butt will have more backbone than the pure glass blank for the same thickness.

September 13, 2024 at 6:54 am #2289166On a more serious note, what does everybody prefer fatheads or shiners?
I was just glad it was not rainbows. Sheldon, you absolutely need to fire your guide. I know nothing about pool 9. I came in with a great plan from what we learned from the first year only for the river to be very different and my plan foiled. We still had a great time and look forward to the next time.
September 12, 2024 at 12:30 pm #2289079It was a lot of fun and we have some good stories. I had my wife delete the pictures that would get us in trouble. I wonder if Chuck ever got his fillings back? The weekend went too fast. It was nice to see everyone.
August 29, 2024 at 11:37 am #2287378Maybe, but then they can’t surf on the wake, which is kind of the whole point.
Correct. But they can still pleasure cruse. So it doesn’t stop them from enjoying one body of water.
August 28, 2024 at 1:43 pm #2287236Would outlawing the use of ballast help the problem? Without the extra weight the boat won’t sit the same in the water or create as big of a wake. Would this make it be more like a ski boat and then will ride on plane not causing the damage?
August 28, 2024 at 11:06 am #2287199It’s crazy to think these boats are causing damage to the lakebed in 33’ of water. I almost want to rent one to add some structure to a couple of flat bowl lakes I fish.
