I was out Thursday 5/25 in the afternoon and evening in the Hudson area. Caught a half a dozen “shorts” and 3 keepers between 17-18″. Most were on crankbaits, one on crawlers. Caught my PB at 25″ LOL (see pic – for comparison the forcepts in the pic is 8 1/2″ long) He put up a good fight! I did see another guy pull up a couple of nice eater size walleyes jigging with minnows.

It did not smell like oil or grease so maybe it was some sort of “muck”. I did send a note to Nick (DNR) and he thought it may have been a clay/mud mix that is very “tenacious” and “almost impossible to wash off”. He indicated that they have to use pressure washers to get it off their boats. So I guess that is all good news. Well that was an interesting little side trip!

no noticeable strong odor like you get with some weeds.

Good point. I have not and did not think of that. I’m not that sure they would be all that interested. Unfortunately I did not mark it on GPS.

Typo on my part. I meant Pool 4. Within sight of the dam, or a minimum of 35 other boats nearby. Both staple requirements to catch them

LOL. Thanks for the morning chuckle!

Could I suggest giving it to Fishing For Life (www.fishingforlife.org).

They will be having some ice fishing events coming up this winter for kids. It is an organization that gets kids into fishing and hunting. I could help facilitate if you want.

Price drop to $25. Location: Saint Paul, Rogers (MN) or possibly pool 3.

Well, I got out this afternoon for a few hours also (May 6). It was a beautiful afternoon to be on the water. While recent trips have not been too spectacular, this one went a little better. I started out with 2 small sauger, then a log – at least I thought it was a log until I felt it move a bit. After 40 minutes I finally got it to the surface and it was the largest carp I have ever seen! (By the way I had 15# braid on and it was close to breaking the whole time!) In hindsight now I wish I had weighed it but frankly I did not want it in my boat! Then I picked up a nice silver/white bass. All on the same gold colored 1/4 oz blade bait pitched 1-2′ from shore.

I have one of these in my boat. I think it is a great charger. It automatically divides up the 20 amps total to where it needs to go. So if one of the batteries gets fully charged, the 20 amps is divided up between the remaining 2 batteries and so forth. You can also have 2 AGM batteries and 1 Flooded battery or other combinations. It can also be used for a 3 battery trolling motor system where the 3 batteries are connected in series.

Found this under “Rainbow smell hook” (exactly as it is spelled)… otherwise known as a pike hook. You learn something new every day! Looks like Scheels and Ebay have them.

There is an official list. Here it is for Minnesota. It is on the Army Corp of Engineers web site.

    Link to ACE: https://www.mvp.usace.army.mil/Portals/57/docs/regulatory/RegulatoryDocs/mn_nav_waters.pdf

I believe the Right to Fish act was passed by Congress in 2012 and includes the following statement: ““(except that, for purposes of this section, the navigable waters of the United States shall be treated as not including Mille Lacs Lake, Minnesota)”.”

So Mille Lacs is now under state control and not federal, for anything, not just guiding. ACE just never took it off their list.

Oh by the way, I too am really glad the guy made it safely off the lake. That is a good reminder to wear safety gear, especially considering the water temps we have right now.

I use it,is the same as the others. They used to have a few more colors

    X2

It has a cure temp of 400 for 15-20 min so you can use it under other colors without “bleeding”. Works well enough as far as I am concerned.

Here is a blade bait I painted with the white you are asking about, then sprayed with their red. Got a lot of overspray but walleye seem to love it!!

There is obviously no harm in trying to repair it. The worst is that it does not work as well as you want it to and you buy a new one.

You did not specify what kind of transducer you have and where the cut is. It makes a big difference. The splice has to be absolutely waterproof or water can seep down through the cable and wreck the crystals in the transducer. Heat shrink tubing is not good enough to prevent water getting in. You can cut the ends clean and solder the ends of each wire together but they must be foil wrapped as in the original cable. The entire bundle must be foil wrapped to prevent interference.

Older transducers were truly in the very high “audio” range. Newer ones are in the RF range and as Randy said above you have to keep the impedance zero or very low. (Keep the spliced portion as short as possible, ie keep the original pairs twisted as much as possible if they are twisted).

If it does not work, Google “Airmar D00342H Inline Cable Splice 10 Conductor IP67 Waterproof”. Airmar, the company the makes many of the transducers out there makes a splice kit for many different number of conductors. The 10 is less than $30. Simple screw connectors. Price goes up corresponding to how many conductors your cable has. If it is an 18 conductor cable, I would forget it myself even though I know how to solder them )

    Good luck.

I’d be tempted to try good old Rit fabric dye in a spray bottle or even a pump sprayer. Easy to mix, fast to apply, and best of all pretty cheap. Remember to use dye fixer as the last step to lock in the dye, I’d say this is worth doing especially to get fade resistance.

I think you are on the right track in your thinking. Current has to be viewed as either adding to or subtracting from boat speed. It would have little effect on dive depth unless you are using lead core, 50/50 weights, etc. The app or the book is a good way to get a very good idea of how deep your crankbait is running.

Attached is part of a spreadsheet I put together on the specs years ago. My notes say the Precision Trolling app has the dive curve too. That may not match my data as I gathered it from several sources including Rapala. YMMV

In other words, if something is not working, switch sooner than later to another technique. I think I’ve heard that before but it is hard sometimes to implement.

    No downstream drifting…..

Awesome explanation. Thank you for the detail. What’s great about your response is that it is a tactic and a process that can be repeated anywhere and not just a “hotspot”.

If I keep learning and fishing the river I am afraid I’ll never be content to go back to <ho hum> lake fishing LOL.

… perpendicular to current. Slow, very slow…

So does that mean you are going back and forth from one point to the other on the shore or allowing the boat to drift downstream a bit in the process?

When I look at the combined experience of just the guys in this thread it’s pretty awesome – and even perhaps a bit intimidating. However, I’ll have to say that after fishing something like 3 falls now up by the dam, I am getting to know that area some and already have some favorite areas. So again everyone, thanks for sharing of your knowledge and experience and reports for us newbies.

Just make sure you know where the wing dams are. They are probably all well under water right now, but as the water drops that might change. Last summer that one up by the dam was pretty close to the surface of the water.

Regarding Everts, I like it OK. They have a couple of Satellites, a (reasonable) dock, a 24 hr. honor fathead bait tank and vending machines for plastics. IFF you can find someone around you can ask questions and get answers. During busy times you have to park your trailer on the top of the hill and later hopefully find someone to get you back up there or it’s a long walk… Launching is $5. The other 3 downriver are free.

Thanks everyone for the reports! Great to hear good and not so good.

Are you all patrolling until you find marks on side imaging and then slowing down to focus on that area or just going to known areas where you have caught fish before?

What size VMCs do you use? Have you tried different size trebles on front vs back?
