Thanks Steve. I was given a cast net and haven’t used it yet. I don’t fish down that way much, but it doesn’t hurt to get the permit if I decide to head that way and catch some bait.

Brian or Steve,
Which online AIS course do we need to take? Here’s where I am looking. Feel free to direct me to the correct URL.
slipbob_nick it specifically says on their site they are against wake surfing on small lakes.
One of the biggest differences between winter and summer fishing is the overall # of people fishing. My guess is that only about 1/4 of those who fish in the summer ice fish and even those who <strong class=”ido-tag-strong”>ice fish probably spend way less hours fishing a week. I also believe that the feeding behavior of winter fish is far less than those of summer and fall fish.
I’ve seen plenty of small lakes lakes get hammered on by ice anglers when the panfish concentrate in the basins, with no regard to limits or possession limits. In open water, the fish are much more scattered after the spawn
I don’t understand why people are against someone using 2 lines for open water fishing. We are able to use 2 lines in the winter. Aren’t fish limits set by science, meaning based on estimated fish populations, not by method of take? Personally, I’d love to be able to set a catfish rod out into the river, and then toss a second line with another bait, or target another species while waiting for action on the catfish rod. Honestly, method of take shouldn’t matter anyway. A limit is a limit, and if i’m reading this bill correctly, you would have to pay for a 2nd line endorsement, which would mean more license revenue for the DNR. Isn’t the DNR complaining about declining license revenues too? The 2nd line endorsement would be a new revenue stream.
Way too light! In hindsight, could this of happened if the snowmobiler was sober? If I remember, it happened at dusk. I don’t have a sled and never rode one so can’t speak on that but I know speed was likely as much a factor as the alcohol.
How about speed limits for riders on lakes? Or no riding after dusk? I realize accidents like this one are pretty rare but maybe they can be prevented. I would think the booze mixed with a sled capable of going 50+ on a wide open lake is an accident waiting to happen.
I feel for the poor family…..
There is already a statewide speed limit for snowmobiles at 50mph. It is recommended when you go through safety training to reduce your speed at night, as it has been proven that at 50mph you are over-driving your headlight in most instances. Couple that with ice that likely did not have snow at the time, so even if you put on the brakes, a sled is hard to stop on glare ice, even with a studded track.
So the gist of this meeting was simply presenting the 2019 proposal for the county. A couple of things that came out it:
1. There is a huge discrepancy in the amount of money needed to enforce this based on the presentations from the lake association folks and the sheriff’s dept. The sheriff’s office does not want regular deputies enforcing this. Their position is to hire seasonal park rangers to enforce it IF it goes through.
2. The DNR has not received a draft proposal for 2019. They have only just received the results from 2018, and just got them the Thursday before this meeting. Meaning, they basically have no opinion yet, and this goes nowhere without DNR approval.
3. Due to time constraints, only a few people got to speak from the gallery. The board tabled the issue for further discussion for sometime later in January. I highly recommend that if you have an opinion on this, submit it to the Wright County board and the DNR. Be respectful with your opinion, and gather as many facts as possible. Factual information is always more helpful in swaying opinions with government officials.
My wife and I got into some nice channel cats over Labor Day weekend. All caught on fresh cut sucker on current seams in about 7-9 feet of water. Also got a carp while fishing for bass along a shoreline. Had to take pictures of it with the jig in it’s mouth. Fun fight on a medium action spinning rod.
Certainly not my biggest, but I haven’t been chasing them much this year. Not that the river levels have calmed down, I may get back after them.
I did the same thing a couple weeks back when I was doing laundry. Managed to hit the switch and didn’t know it until I got home from work, and the house was almost 80 degrees upstairs. Luckily, my dogs stay downstairs where it is cooler during the day when I’m gone to work.
I know this is an old post, but I just bought a Lowe Roughneck 1860, which has a similar mounting track. Check out Monster Rod Holders. http://monsterrodholders.com/product-category/rod-holder-bases-2/
They have a video on how to install them too, if your boat does not have a round access point for the bolt.
Another one I have found is http://www.phischon.com/.
Hope this helps. I can post pics once I have them installed on my boat.
I was one of the lucky ones to get picked to attend this event. The events are open to any veteran. The volunteer guides were great. The weather wasn’t the greatest, but you can’t help that. Fishing in the morning was slow, but it picked up in the afternoon. Every boat got into some fish as far as I know. There are pictures on the Facebook page from the event.
I just closed on a house and moved over the weekend. Back to fishing after we get settled in.
All Seasons Garage Door out of Ramsey. They serve all parts of the metro, and I know the owners personally.

Bowfishing now is pretty much gonna be on the rivers, or the lakes that stay clear. Several of the lakes I shot this spring are completely unshootable now due to visibility, even with the lights on. Where are you guys thinking, and when? I will gladly share the info with my club
Sometimes we get lucky lol. You’d be amazed at the big ones we miss. Brian you were a great host and hopefully we can hold a tourney, or just a fish shooting get together there more often. I had never shot that section of river before this year, and I love it the more I shoot it. Hope to see you soon

Heading down the Red Wing shortly. Once we get there, time to scout the river and wait for the shoot to start tonight at 8pm
Let’s just say……….20 yard dumpster has been ordered for fish disposal. The tourney we did in June out of Alma we took 2.4 tons of fish
I won’t be there until Saturday morning sometime, as I have obligations Friday. I’ll call you when I get down there and we can meet up. The weigh in is always entertaining for folks. They can never believe how many rough fish we take out of the river at one of these gigs, and the size of the big ones
Brian,
Thanks for posting this. I got your voicemail just haven’t had a chance to call you back yet.
