We stayed at the Now Jade a couple years ago. It was right beside the Puerto Morelos marina/boat harbour. We just walked over and there was a marine adventure center. You can book fishing and snorkeling. We took a 1/2 day fishing trip. We had a good day, ended up with some nice Dorado to take back to our resort for them to cook up for us!

Thanks Daryl. Watching the egg collection process was very interesting. I wish I could go back 15 years and I would pick a career in fisheries!! So much more interesting… LOL…

By the way, Sherman is one Nebraska reservoir where we have very good natural reproduction of walleyes and probably do not need to stock any walleyes. But, some anglers believe that the more fish you stock the better the fishing will be, so in addition to the natural reproduction at Sherman, we also stock walleye fingerlings.

At Sherman we stocked walleye fingerlings in alternate years, odd-numbered years 1995-2009. We also stocked walleye fingerlings in Sherman in 2010. Since 2000 we have stocked over 817,000 walleyes in Sherman. If even a small percentage of those fish survive, that would be all the walleyes that water could support and then some.

Between natural reproduction and stocking, there are plenty of walleyes maintain the Sherman walleye population and fishery. Waters can only support so many fish and that is especially true for a top-of-the-food-chain predator like walleyes. Stocking more walleyes is not necessarily a good thing and in fact stocking more fish may not produce any more fish for anglers to catch. Walleye populations wherever walleyes are found are typically maintained by large year-classes that are produced once every 3-5 years. That is the case whether those walleye populations are stocked or maintained entirely by natural reproduction. That is the case at Sherman as well as all other walleye waters in Nebraska and no amount of stocking will change that.

How many of those fingerling walleyes end up being nothing but fish food? Well, a lot of them; by far most of them! Small fish live in a “fish eat fish” world and the percentage of young fish that survive their first year is very low; in most cases less than 1%, almost always less than 10%. But, that is in fact the reason fish produce a tremendous number of young! By collecting walleye eggs, hatching and then re-stocking them, we can increase survival somewhat, but the fact of the matter is most of those fish are not going to survive, ever, any year, under any conditions. However, enough will survive to maintain the population and that is all we can ask for.

Wow thats a lot of information Thanks for the reply Daryl

With all that being said. Since Sherman is really one lake that has great natural reproduction, If the walleye at Sherman were left un-touched to do their own thing do you think we would end up with more or less than 160,000 1.5″ fingerlings per year?

One more question running through my mind. It seems that the biologists had great sucess in gathering up fish to collect eggs from. Do they have any idea what percentage of the spawning females in the lake are netted and milked? What percentage are still left to naturally spawn in the lake?

Awesome fish Ben. We trolled by shortly after you hooked into yours. We made a whole pass around the island while you were still fighting the beast. Got back around in time to see you net it from a distance. Did’nt even cross my mind to come give you a hand. Maybe next time

I have very little experiance with catfishing. The only ones I have ever caught have been while fishing for Walleye. Shortly after we caught and released ours we were paid a visit by the CO out on his jet ski. We told him about our fish we caught and he asked channel or flat head. Heck if I know I told him. Had to show him the picture on my cell phone. He tells us of course flat head and it only needs to be 15# for a MA. Guess we should of took it to the scale.

We were also trolling for walleye at Sherman this weekend and hooked into a big one. We were using flicker shads with lead core. The thing hit on the rod with the planer board. Man it almost took the planer under like a bobber. I grabbed the rod to make sure it was not a snag and then handed it to my dad for the honors. We only had on 8# mono for the leader so we had to baby it to get it in.

Not exactly what we were fishing for but it sure was fun. I saw Garver catching his. It looked like he got some extra help from another boat to get it landed what a pig!!!!

Here is my dad with Catfish hunter LOL!!!

Had another good afternoon of fishing on Saturday. Tried another fresh group of willows and found some hungry eye’s. Had to throw back a 22″ and we lost a few in the willows. Ended up with 6 in the freezer.

This is very tragic for the lake community. Being a father myself it has made me sick all day thinking about his family. I just talked to Ben last night sure didn’t think it would for the last time.

Flatwalter that sucks your docks got messed up. Do I need to drop off my business cards to your neighbors.

Luckily all the docks in our bay survived with no problems.

Well so much for getting on the ice again. Holy crap someone must have flew over and dumped ice melt on the lake. The only ice left is on the main lake and going fast. Trail 8 is all open and the main lake is open from prarie dog point north. Thunder bay still has ice and the marina is still partially froze.
All ice should be gone by the end of the week at this rate.

Yes there is some open water on Sherman. I will post pictures and updates as the lake opens up. I have been working at the lake building some boat docks. Hopefully the ice stays in the bay for the week. Need to get another dock set.

I ordered a dozen more from Cabelas but they only have a few colors. I need to find an excuse to head east if I want to find any kind of selection.

BTW Zach how many flicker shads do you have now. I bet you can open your flicker shad store by now LOL.
My wife thinks I have a problem collecting tackle. You should bring your tackle box by and show my wife that I am not that bad.

I placed my order at Cabelas today. Some were in stock and some were backordered. By the looks of Sherman today it is going to be a long….. time before we are trolling. Still 20″ of ice.

Sounds like a great day. I decided to give trolling a try this summer at Sherman also. Being a live bait guy I had to go out and buy 4 new trolling combos and rig up with lead core. Man did that pay off. we caught more fish this year than ever. And even landed several hogs that were released. The new slot has really worked great for us this year. We have caught several 19″ fish and a few in the 17″ range. One 27.5″ and a dozen between 23″-25″.

Ben I sent you a PM also and thanks for the report.

We have stayed several times at the Calamus outfitters. They have some small cabins and some big lodge type cabins. Just depends on how many beds you need.

I have painted three boats. First two on my own and wow what a lot of work. Last year I traded out some work with my brother in law for a new paint job. He ownes a body shop with a nice new paint booth and all kinds of tools. I only helped with the sanding on this one and let the pro do the painting. The finished product is remarkable. You would never guess the age of the boat now.

We did not totally strip all the paint except where the scratches went all the way through. Then he used a self etching primer. The paint used was actual auto paint and we matched the paint code off my truck. Then he gave it a couple coats of clear coat.

Water temp in the shallow water by thunder bay boat ramp was only about 40 a few days ago. I would think it needs to warm up before the fish begin to move.

We drove over the dam again the other day and it looks still froze. Some open water up the lake further. Maybe the next few days will open her up. Or you could throw in your sledge hammer like walleye4 did.

    BTW Bass Buster nice fish

I am not much of a bass fisherman mainly walleye. I have to admit pulling those 20″ bass through the ice is a blast. I can’t imagine how big they will be by next year. It is almost time for walleye fishing now though. The bass will have to wait. I would much rather catch some good eats.

It should be no problem to catch a meal at Sherman this year

We always catch most of our pike close to the shore. Believe it or not but at times there is only a foot of line plus the steel leater sticking below the ice and the pike just nail it.

I thik it will work out great for tournies also. Everyone should be able to weigh in their 4 fish for sure and if you happen to get an over you’re in the money.

I am hoping to get the boat on Sherman in a couple weeks to drown some creek chubs. I may stop by over the weekend to see if they are filling it yet.

I have a 12 year old Daughter who is going to be glad they changed the rule. Not to many kids can shoot accurate with open sights. And a 1 x scope is not much better IMO.
