Add another vote for Barnes. Shot elk, pronghorn, and lots of whitetail with 168gr TTSX from a Tikka T3 lite In -06. Recovered one from a whitetail and it weighed 167gr.

I’ve found blood trail takes a while to get going sometimes but they don’t go far with a good shot anyway. Devastating wound channels.

You might consider one of these. We have one at the lake and it makes awesome pizzas. I’ve been on the brick oven fence too and this has been a great alternative and probably a 10th the cost, depending how all-out you’d wanna go.

You might wanna check out Vermont maple pig candy ribs on amazingribs.com. He calls it porknography and I’m inclined to agree with him. The website has pretty much become my bible for all things meat related.

Anyone feel like they crept north earlier than usual this year? Seems like they’re usually following the edge of spring weather as it goes north but several times in the dead of Grand Forks, ND winter this year I saw them around town and in the country.

    Can we talk about rye?

Far North Spirits in Kennedy, MN (way northwest) is a cool story and they make an fantastic 100% straight rye whiskey.

The rye is grown up there, they have their own cooper, and are pretty much completely self-sufficient in their production.

Not sure if they distribute in the TC area but they do to each coast so I wouldn’t be surprised.

Totally worth the $40, which is a pinch more than I normally spend for a decent bottle of whiskey, but like I said, no regerts…

What about the sheer logistics of taking a wheelhouse on a northern WI lake? Having fought horrible slush in Vilas county so many times I’m not sure how jacked I’d be to try to tackle that. But maybe that’s just me and the lakes i’ve fished.

Small aluminum skid house, sure. Wheel house, meh, I think I’d just keep my barstool warm instead )

South of Oklahoma City and just into Texas north of Dallas you can get into decent hunting. You could do that drive in a long day.

A little bit of googling will yield a lot of results for outfitters. Most charge by the hog but I have found one or two that are a flat fee and no limit. It’s a blast, I recommend it! Oh yeah, and good eating! Just make sure you cook it through so you don’t end up with unwelcome guests, if you catch my drift… shock

I have two different model Bayou Classic burners that I use for brewing. They’re hogs. I haven’t timed it but I bet 7 gallons of wort will boil in about 12-15 minutes. And if I’m boiling water bath canning I can get the few gallons needed for that boiling in probably 5-6.

Haven’t deep-fried with it yet but I bet you’d barely have it turned on and you’d have 375 in no time flat. Plus there’s no silly safety switches at all.

I think my models are sp-10 and sq-14.

    Anyone know this one

Stinkhorn…you’re not gonna believe this but if you dig/brush the dirt away from the base of it there’s two, well, just google stinkhorn mushroom and see for yourself… Supposedly the “lower parts” good to eat shock

I’m not aware of an oyster mushroom that doesn’t have gills that go all the way to the base. Don’t think there should be a visible stem there, but I’m not an expert either.

If I can find good Chestnut crab apples they are right up there with the Honeycrisp.

toast honeycrisp was developed from the humble chestnut crab so it stands to reason!

Chestnut crab gets my vote for fall favorite, especially after a light frost! Makes me think of grouse and goose hunting!

I’m late to the game here but I thought is there a law that said if you sell a gun private party to private party (totally legal) but it is used in the commission of a crime within three years of sale and you didn’t do a NICS check you could be held liable as the seller. Was it just for pistols and “assault weapons?” Did I totally make this up? I’ve never sold a gun so not a huge concern of mine )

It is my understanding a private citizen does NOT have access to the NICS system. The system is set up for FFL holders and even then the FFL holder needs set up an account and password before accessing the NICS system.

I could be mistaken so don’t take the above, as legal advice.

I should’ve clarified. I believe you’re correct that we don’t have access. I meant doing private to private sale at an FFL dealer and running the check. I’ve been asked to do that by someone I bought a gun from and have no issue with that. Peace of mind for the seller and I would ask the same.

Great thread. My wife also has celiac and it’s pretty severe too.

I know she had one of the best meals she’s ever had, EVER, at Bar La Grasa downtown MPLS, with her sister in law. Don’t recall if they have a specific gluten free menu but they accommodated very well and the leftovers I got were delicious. But beware, $$$$$! Good special date place.

We got our wedding cake from Bittersweet and it was fantastic, GF or otherwise. We stop in when we can when we’re in the cities for treats.

Pizza Luce does a pretty solid GF pizza.

There’s a chain called Boulder Tap House and there’s one in Moorhead where we used to live. They had a separate GF frier so she could get good GF restaurant fries, and their GF bread for their sandwiches was good too. Not sure where else those restaurants are located or if they participate too but something to keep in mind.

Omission Brewing specializes in beer crafted to remove gluten. They use an enzyme that precipitates the gluten out. I think it’s below something like 3 PPM gluten so depending on sensitivity might be ok. I know there’s other breweries doing this as well but can’t think of them off hand.

I’m following this closely as we’re always looking for new places to check out when we’re traveling.

    Keep the suggestions coming!

I have one of the cheap knockoff gopros that is pretty much dedicated to my boat for solo fishing.

I’ve got a nifty clamp to attach it to my windshield and set the camera on constant record with 10 minute loop. If I catch a big fish I just hold it up to the camera, go back and save the particular loop, then grab screenshots later. Works pretty well and not sure I have $75 into it. Plus I’ve got the benefit of video if I wanna save that too.

These knock-offs that are hitting the market aren’t go-pros but they take surprisingly high quality video.

Funny timing for this! Was just talking to our neighbor at the lake about the woodpecker that starts hammering on the end cap of his steel gutters between 5:30-5:45 each morning waking him and us up then periodically pounding away throughout the day!

Can’t help but wonder if the vibration doesn’t drive bugs out of the non-metal parts of his soffit/fascia area.

Couldn’t agree more. Seems she’s listening to the voices of the people in the area and calling to the carpet the noisy few who somehow are getting their voices heard. Fantastic letter.

Rumor has it Ingebretsen will take whatever version the musky legislation is in right now to a floor vote today. Anyone know anything more? MN Musky Alliance posted as much today urging emails to state senators with this letter from Rep. Franson, who represents OTC and Douglas Counties, attached.

I run a masterbuilt 40” electric way more now than I do my wood-fired smoker. You can get 30” models for around $200-250.

You can set the temp quite low on them, like 85-90 on mine I think.

I’ve cold smoked a lot of bacon and chipotles on mine with an A-maze-n pellet smoker sitting in the bottom. Then you don’t even need to run the heat on the masterbuilt unless it’s really cold out. Also, you can get a solid 12-16 hours of smoke on a pound of pellets, eliminating the need to be adding chips all the time.

I swear I don’t sell the A-maze-n, I just absolutely love it. This is one of those rare products that is exactly everything it is proclaimed to be. Plus I’m pretty sure they’re made in MN!

I could sing their praises all day. PM me if you have anymore questions.

Here’s some buckboard bacon I just finished a couple weeks ago )

Oh. Well I guess there’s that. That makes it a little better.

totally sidetracking but does anyone else feel noawadays that they could make a million dollars being an apology writer and just sell your services to the myriad public figures who are constantly apologizing for things they did but “knew were wrong and they’re terribly sorry.”?…

I THOUGHT that was what she did but could hardly believe it. I get the frustration of “losing to get a silver medal” unlike earning it in the more individual competitions but that doesn’t excuse an action like that.

Great ice everywhere I’ve been. Again, I don’t want to sound like an authority figure on the lake because it’s only my second winter on it but I think the only places I’d pay attention to is probably the inlet on the far southeast end and the outlet over on the northeast corner of the west basin. Just take that info for what it’s worth; a semi-educated guess.

I’ll be out this weekend. Was out two weekends ago. Didn’t find walleyes but also didn’t fish hard either (had kids with). It seems they may have moved out deeper.

Can’t really say I have any tips but my plan is pretty much gonna be to explore and try to hunt them down. I’ll be out with a friend so we should be able to get mobile and cover some ice.

Maybe someone else will chime in too. I’d be curious to hear what others might have to say!

    Good luck!
