Punch rig. 7’6″ heavy fast rod, 50lb braid. 3/4-1.5 oz wt. To find the sweet spots, go out in spring and graph the whole lake looking for hard bottom areas and any structure. When the weeds are full grown in summer, fish will still be around structure.

I know the season has probably closed, but thought I might put in my 2 cents. sometimes if you jump a deer and he/she isn’t sure what you are, they make a little circle just out of sight and go right back to where they were laying. I had this happen a few years ago. I jumped a deer(I didn’t see if it was a buck or doe). For some reason I remembered what I had read in the book “How to bag the biggest buck of your life” from Larry Benoit of Vermont about the deer making a circle. So I moved over about 50 yards to my right to the edge of a small grassy area. I got behind a dead fall, dropped my pack and waited. 10 minutes later a small 8 point walks right to me and passes by at 12 feet! He never even saw me or smelled me. He went right back to where I had jumped him. It was the coolest thing I had ever seen! Next time you jump a deer give it a try, you might just get him.

No Way on the neck shot!! I killed a deer back in 2004 that had been shot by someone else in the neck. He had a 2″ hole right through his neck meat above the spine about midway between his head and shoulder. When I first saw him at about 75 yards he showed no sign of any injury. I shot him in the lungs and he ran off and dropped dead. I discovered the neck wound after I got to him. He would not have died from the neck shot, but he may have “dropped in his tracks” from the shock. Only to get up and run away.

Yep you gotta get used to the cold. We have never hunted in a blind or box. Just in the stand whether it’s a ladder stand or platform stand. I figure if the deer live in the weather(cold or warm) I should hunt in the same elements. That’s what I call “fair chase”. I’ve been doing it for 37 years and I don’t plan on changing. When I first started hunting deer, I was told to get down and walk a little to warm up. Then get back in the stand and sit until my uncle came to get me.

New to this thread. here is a pair of sheds I found 7 years ago. they were about 30 feet apart. 6 years later(last deer season) my cousin found this shed about 500 yards from where I found the matched set. On the pedical there is a very unique piece of bone from the skull on each shed. to me there is no doubt it’s from the same deer. What do you guys think?

Jack,No one really knows how much he weighed. I have had estimated from 250 to 350 pounds. All I can say is my uncle is 5’9″ tall and weighs 210# in the photo. My estimate from a chart I used from years ago puts the deer at 275#- 300#. My uncle in the photo and his brother (who is was stronger and younger) could only drag the deer about 50 yards. then they went to get the neighbor with the jeep which he is standing in. Truly a huge Minnesota buck. We still have all the antlers from back then to the present day. Actually shot my personal best: and 8 point that weighed 210# this year. It was ten years since I had gotten any deer, so I was quite happy.

I hang the American Flag out on the cabin in honor of my late uncle Vernon. Deer camp isn’t the same without him. This is a deer he shot in 1969. Still the biggest bodied buck I have ever seen! The “Shack” as he called it still stands proud as ever.

In the bathroom before the toilet was turned toward the shower and was part of the shower basin. we completely removed that and installed a separate shower and toilet, and added a full sink with cabinet, new LED light, and widened the bathroom by 6″ on both walls. also all new plumbing completely sealed where it goes through the floor. new walls and paneling also for the bathroom.

I have a HH also. I was diagnosed with it about 12 years ago. I take the acid reducer called “ACIPHEX”(Rabeprazole) it is a little different than the over the counter acid reducers. I had tried all of them with no results and allergic to them all. I would get hives, rashes, fever, itchy skin. This might be something to try? It seems most doctors won’t prescribe it because it’s not over the counter. It cost’s me $84/month for 2 pills a day, however I only take one per day and 2 as needed.. Diet and exercise definitely helps with re-flux. Also “never” eat anything after 8 pm., take a walk after supper for 15 minutes, sleep on your left side(this prevents food/acid from leaking out of your stomach). just a couple things that work for me. hope you feel better soon.

this past weekend around Detroit Lakes, MN area. I fished Saturday with the water temp ranging from 46 in the bay type areas of the lake to 50 in the main part of the lake. I found the fish were holding in the warmer main part of the lake and caught them on a 1/2 oz. rattle trap retrieved slowly over the tops of coontail and cabbage in 3-8′ of water(the trap color was tennessee shad) You had to retrieve it throwing straight into shore and back out–not at an angle or parallel to shore. Just ticking it off the tops of the weeds. I also caught them on a 1/2 brown/purple jig with a Zoom Super Chunk trailer(bright blue) in 2-3′ of water. I used a swimming retrieve and found the fish located in and around the grass clumps on the sand flats. the water temp in these areas was 50 also. Another key was finding the long straight shorelines that had a pretty good break line at 4-10′ The lakes I fished the visibility was about 3 feet. hope this helps.

Make sure to have your Milwaukee heated sweatshirt along! I fished 8 hours last Saturday in 32* weather-never got cold. Caught a bunch of bass in 46 degree water. I live near Detroit Lakes,MN. good luck.

yes pretty pricey. I figure if I’m going to upgrade I only want to buy the right one. Spot lock would be used only in rough water windy conditions. Thanks for the info guys.
