hi, good question ! I came on to ask the same thing. My post was promted by the Mills Fleet Farm ad this A.M. Hope we get some good advice. I am especially wondering about how they work through differant kinds of ice-milky, cloudy, etc. even if I wait till an ice-fishing show it would be nice to have some “expert” advice.

if you are hunting whitetails I’d go with the 270 in a youth model. the kick of any firearm can be modified by good training. you don’t want to hobble her hunt with something marginal like the .243. watch the ads and check out some gun shows you should be able to get into something purty nice for not a whole big bundle. oh yeah, forget the 3030.

just finished reading the Star Trib articile from friday for the third time and I’m still confused. The ruling seems to address a very narrow set of circumstances, which is what the case was based on. Fish houses no, fishing boats yes, just because you can sleep and eat in the house. the DNR still needs probable cause to stop your boat, but if you admit to fishing they can turn it inside out looking for fish ? good grief. I’m not a poacher or a lawyer but this ruling seems to just make things more confusing The dissenting justice looked down the road and saw the possibility of an enormous opportunity for the abuse of power. this doesn’t help the relationship of enforcement and the sporting public. One person quoted said this will just keep some lawyers busy for years, yeah we wouldn’t want them to run out of things to do. Now instead of having clarified the situation it gets even more murky. oh well good fishing to all

first of all; good on the gents who kept their cool and did the right things to help that woman second, I’ve never felt silly about calling the police in a questionable situation – you never know – maybe it is nothing but then again one never knows let them check it out and make sure. As far as I know the Lilydale ramp does not have a gate, but it does have posted hours, maybe if you can make a good account of your self (trailering a boat) the police won’ t make too much of it, but I would not take a chance of leaving my vehicile over night. finally, one mid summer night I was shore fishing by the MN river, it got dark and the bugs were bad so I started walking back along the trail to my car. It was maybe a couple hundred yards back to the lot and I was concentrating on where I was putting my feet and ummm probably thinking about stopping at White Castle before I went home. Next thing I know I hear this terrible screaming noise and it seems to be coming striaght at me down the trail. The humbeling part was the next thing I’m about ten feet back down the trail in a low crouch in some kind of defensive position, every nerve tingling. I can only guess my eyes were as big as saucers because that’s the way they felt since all my senses felt like they were cranked up to maxium power. whether adrelinine and anti coagulants were pumping into my blood stream I can only guess, and I’m still not sure if anything(s) retracted back up for protection but some where down deep my body got itself ready for whatever was coming. I’m pretty sure it was some bird(s) that had been starteled by my approach and I just went on home. Anyway we can walk upright and wear fancy clothes and pretend we’ve come so far but just below the surface… good fishing all, p2f

I keep a couple of those big bandanas in my pfd pocket they don’t cost much and can be used for a wide variety of things, including a cover for my head ( which I’ve learned sun burns in about two nano seconds and then hurts a bunch). and you get to look like a pirate for a little while

I guess this post is actually from the pool2curmudgeon, I just wonder what the final cost of the rescue-recovery will be when this finely rigged water crap breaks up? maybe playing games on some farm pond is ok but that river is no place to be risking your life or anyone else’s on something “make shift” like that. did I notice the craft seems to be licencend ( ? ! ) wow I spose you could get a floating log licenced too

from what I’ve seen(usually while waiting to lock thru myself) they divide the barges up, push whatever fits,( tying the rest up of course), through the lock, tie those up, motor vessel locks back through, gets the rest or the next segment, same thing again, until everything is where they want it, hook em all back together and away they go. it’s quite a process, now I stick to one pool at at time, altough you can call or cb the lock to see what they have scheduled.

yeah that’d be the thing. I already had the frig so, there was nothing to lose.. in this household if the wife hated it that’s that, no deal. it would have to be a heckuva good deal to overcome an obstical like that.

there’s the trick with the newspaper; fill the area with crumbled up newspaper, let sit, and repeat till the odor is gone. this worked with a refrigerator that spent a week during one summer without power and had amoung other things a five pound torsk in the freezer compartment. the frozen bread dough was really something. anyway the newspaper trick worked like a champ on that.

just shooting from the lip here; are those the plugs with the double lead ( or whatever they are called, sorry.) I had a auto shop instructor who when asked about them said the concept was good but the current just follows the path of least resitance no matter what so only one lead sparks at any time. he seemed to think using a good set of plugs, keeping them clean, and replacing when needed worked just as good, and I dunno probably would be cheaper in the long run. if that’s not what you are talking never mind

unfortunatly more bad news for the waters we love. if we could convince folks that eating these things would grow hair, enhance virility, and reverse the aging process, they would be hunted to extinction. the real world will require the desire and the funds to protect what we have. hope we are up for it.

thank goodness, when I first saw this thread subject I thought it was one of those awful nationality jokes. you know like give him an upside down map and tell him to walk backwards or something. but no, he is a helpful friendly EFN staff member after all. (his picture actually looks like my fishing buddy the morning after)

oh oh a survey thingy, yes but mmmmmm maybe no, ah it’s that MANDATORY part that keeps sticking. have I seen some absolutly flippin crazy behavior on the water? oh yeah. I run a small outfit and my favorite water is pool 2. on some weekends it seems part of the fun for some of these guys is scaring the stuffings out of anyone with a boat smaller than them. part of the fun for me is having some knowlege of the rules of the road, right of way, burdened and privlidged, how to overtake another vessal, what the buoys mean, etc. On several occasions it seems some of these fellows wern’t happy until I was forced completly out of the channel ( people in fishing boats have always acted responsibly that I’ve seen). Now I just avoid being on the water when these folks seem to be out and about. Would a MANDATORY course help? hmmmmmm I must be a cynic, because I doubt it, some of these guys paid too much money to have to act safely and responsably…it would just get in the way of their “fun” other than that good fishing to all, kenn

here goes two cents or more like a nickel; a couple of random thoughts. I think and this is assuming the research value is valid that a tournment such as descrbed would be a great benefit in other ways too. considering the uniqness of this stretch of the river, an opportunity to showcase it not only as a fishery but as a recreation and natural area would be outstanding. putting it bluntly I feel bringing people to the pool would perhaps bring some buy-in by more folks to this resource. we have in our midst an incredable body of water. a ‘working” river that runs almost thru the heart of a large metropoliton area, that still offers the many opportunities this river has is simply amazing. I guess I’m selfish but I’d like to see more people interested in maintaining and protecting this pool and it’s watershed. hope I explained that ok I guess the only other thing that makes me wonder is the question of access, they may be thinking farther down the road but with 494 closed I’m not sure where a tournement could be staged from. there are options but to my knowledge some are quite limited. better leave that to those who need to think about logistical type things. anyway the weather is looking up good fishing to all, kenn

first let me say I’m guessing, hoping, praying, that we’re preaching to the choir with the folks who enjoy this site. take home everything you bring with you or dispose of it properly. the critters don’t seem to be able to consume everything left for them before I manage to track some into my boat or truck. Again I’m guessing here but I wish people with dogs, not those of us with dogs who would never do such a thing of course, would remember that the whole world isn’t the place for Fido to leave his calling card. It’s gotten so if I’m putting in or taking out when it’s dark I check the ramp and landing area for surprises, and yes I have had to clean up a few. oh well. Pool 2 was beautiful yesterday not much luck with the fish but it was great getting out, took a little cruise felt the sun on my face wind blowing thru what hair I have left on my head. hoping this is just the first of many more days on the riv. good fishing all, kenn
