Not sure if this is relevant but how are you shutting off your heater? I once had problems with my Big Buddy heater. I ran a 10′ hose, 20 lb tank and used the specified filter. I realized when turning off at the unit, I was trapping propane in the hose and when trying to start up next time I would go out the heater wouldn’t work. So I started making sure that I shut off the tank and let the heater burn out on it’s own. After that, I have never had another problem.

December 29, 2016 at 11:01 pm #1660768Hands down, the side step. I am on my second season with a Frabil Predator Side Step and this is easily the best fish house I have ever owned and I have owned them all. There is something about having a vertical front wall and the ability to fish a 36″ TUCR inside and have the room for setting the hook without hitting the front of your house. Not to mention the the luxury of having two doors to use without having to step over your gear to exit and enter. Also you can stand up without having to duck down at all.
Good luck with your decision.December 20, 2016 at 12:29 pm #1658475Thanks guys for the information. I will give Castaways a call Friday morning before I head up.
December 18, 2016 at 6:51 pm #1658051I also have 2 small children and hands down go with a SxS. Much safer, more versatile, get a plow and have a multi-functional machine. You can pull anything, it really makes ice fishing easier and then kids will love it.

January 18, 2016 at 10:28 pm #1593677I bought a 3’x5′ piece of rubber restaurant kitchen floor mat. It keeps your feet off the ice and is light enough to roll up and throw in my sled. Works great.
January 4, 2016 at 9:49 pm #1589755Thanks for all the advice, I will definitely take the wheeler and portable for the night time bite. Not much of a drinker to hang out at the bar. Make the most out of a work related trip.
Thanks again,
PhilDecember 21, 2015 at 9:40 pm #1586426East/West Rush in Chisago county? If so, there’s 2-1/2″ at the landing. Guys were fishing to the North in the bay. No one was out by Cigar island yet. (west) Not sure how thick on east but there were guys by the landing.
May 12, 2015 at 5:53 pm #1543921I purchased a Frabill Predator Sidestep at the ice fish show this past December for $700.00. I am very happy with it. When I first saw it last year I instantly checked Otter’s website to see if they also made one and to my surprise and disappointment they didn’t. I know that Otter makes the best sleds but to my surprise Frabill really stepped up their quality. If you do purchase one of these make sure you get the Predator and not the Guardian. The Guardian only has 7/8″ poles and their lower level sled. The Predator has 1-1/4″ poles and their heavy-duty sled. I have pulled this shack all over Mille Lacs and many other lakes with my 4 – wheeler with no problem at all. As for the side entry doors, man it is the greatest, teamed up with the Clam LED light bars it was the best year of ice fishing in the 17 years I have been doing this.
March 13, 2015 at 12:57 pm #1523095Also it is inevitable that your windows ARE going to crack. If they are sewn in you now have to cut them out and re-sew them. I usually, when I am packing up, take my windows out and then fold my house up. Also they are very easily replaced.
December 9, 2014 at 2:09 pm #1481850Went to Joe’s, they called Frabill, compared to house already set up and came to the conclusion that the parts list is wrong. Poles are the right length. I’ll say this is probably one of the times that not reading the instructions might have been a good thing. But there are so many parts to one of these. I wanted to make sure everything was there.
November 29, 2014 at 8:09 pm #1477988No, a 20# tank. What was happening is by turning off my heater at the unit its self propane and air was freezing up the line and wouldn’t ignite or stay lit if it did. Now, when I’m getting ready to leave, the first thing I do is shut off the tank and let all of the residual propane and air burn off while I am packing up and the next time I use it, it starts right up. This started at the beginning of last season, 1st couple of times out, then after figuring this out not a single problem the next 25+ times.
November 29, 2014 at 12:07 pm #1477876I had the same problem last year. Although I use a big buddy heater, the same situation kept happening to me. What I ended up doing is putting a filter on the unit. I still had the same problem until I realized that when I was packing up for the night I was turning the heater off at the unit, so I started turning the unit off at the propane tank and I have not had the problem again. I go out on West Rush lake every Friday night after work so I worked the heck out of my heater and still have not had the problem reoccur.
