Last year I made the jump to a one man flip over. I bought a Clam Scout XL Thermal. It was the Jason Mitchell special edition from Scheels (1st pic). The first mod I did to it was adding 16′ of 3/8″ marine rope. Pulling this shelter for me is no problem for the snow. The key to easy pulling is 1) Keep weight low. Bring what you need, but not too much. 2) Distribute the weight evenly through the tub. The front of the sled should be the lightest so you don’t plow snow. I mounted 2 garage hangars to a plate on the back of my sled to hold my 6″ Lazer hand auger (2nd pic). This makes the auger super accessible and frees up so much space inside my sled. A little buddy heater works great and is stable on snow and ice. I don’t have any padding inside the sled, I keep my tackle inside jig trays and small tackle boxes. It takes some time to figure out how you want things set up, so don’t rush things.
I’ve moved the gain down as low as it can go, even put it into weed mode. The noise is still there. Most of the time when I’m fishing I don’t have the gain much above the base level. I’m starting to wonder if the activity from the strike lights it up.
I am always hesitant to run lubricant in amounts less than prescribed by the equipment manufacturer. Amsoil is good oil, but why risk seizing an engine due to lack of oil? 80:1 (1.6 oz oil) and 50:1 (2.6 oz oil). I’ll continue to run my equipment at the recommended mixes.
The Evo 1 was out at Gander a few weeks ago when I was shopping for flip overs. I went through it and was impressed by the idea and quality, but it needs refinement. There isn’t enough fishable room in front of the sled. You aren’t staring directly into the canvas as you look ahead from the seat, but there’s not as much room as I thought there would be. Putting stakes in the corner grommets of the front is almost a necessity. Without them, the front wall creeps in towards you. The set up time isn’t very long as there are only 2 hubs to pop out, but it takes a minute or two. For run and gun fishermen this may or may not be a deal-breaker. One big drawback of the shelter is the lack of tub space. The canvas and poles take up a lot of space when stowed away so accessing your gear when the Evo is not set up would be difficult.
Can you leave the hubs out and kick up the front of the shack to move it?
If you were dead-set against collapsing the shelter you might be able to get a hold on the strap on the outside of the top hub and lift on that as you pulled the Evo. My guess is that this method would be more difficult than collapsing it and unfolding it at the new spot.
Has anyone sat in one of these yet? I sat in the EVO2 at Scheels the other night and though they brag about 30 ft of fishable space a lot of that space is wasted space in my mind. It seems also that you would be pretty limited on length of rod as the front of the shelter seems close to the seats once you sit down. Just my opinion but would be interested to know if anyone noticed the same.
I got the same impression. There is a definite change in the shape of the space, but a lot of it is wasted space. There seems to be the most area in the corners of the hub where it is hard to fish. They could be spots for a deadstick, but not much else. The biggest rod that’s usually seen in a flipover is around 28″ and that is all that I’d take in an Evo.
There are 2 ways to save a point of interest one is community edit which is available to all to see. If you look at your screen you see various icons and if click them you will see Joe the catfish guys spot. (Who fishes catfish? ) The other is called a Marker which is private to you and if you want to send it someone. See the screen shots. Tap and hold the screen a cross hair comes up, drag it to where you want a waypoint/marker, tap on question mark, tap add to favorites, name it, then click add or if your standing where you want a waypoint set at current position.
Or if you want to add a waypoint/marker manually tap on the spy glass at the top the map screen on the next screen look of “Lat/Long” on the top right and you can then dial in your waypoint/marker and save it
All achieved or saved marker/waypoints are found by tapping the menu tab and your saved tracks, routes and markers archive will be shown
Is this feature available when you buy the base Boating USA app or would I have to upgrade to Navionics + to have the ability to create waypoints on the contour maps?
Most of your perch spoons will work for walleye, I like braid, but it freezes up more. Where do you primarily fish? Never hurts to have some 1/4 oz buckshot rattling spoons.
x2 on where do you fish? ex. If Lake of the Woods you’ll hear the response to make sure you have gold in your color choices. Somewhere else might be a different recommendation.
I fish on medium to small lakes in the Detroit Lakes and eastern North Dakota areas.
