When fishing in less than 8’ of water, it is best to reposition the transducer into “perspective” mode. This is a physical rotation of the transducer from it typical vertical orientation into a horizontal orientation. When in “perspective” mode the angler gets a 135 degree horizontal by 20 degree vertical view…which works much better to see over the tops of weeds and track moving fish up shallow.

Drove all around Minnetonka yesterday, surprised to see that all the bigger bays and channels were still open water. The wind was whipping up some decent waves and I assume current. Careful out there folks!
July 3, 2024 at 11:18 pm #2279827I’ll second NutriSource.
Our Springers are active and hunted often in the fall, so we run the high protein Performance blend. An average house pup would do fine on the regular NutriSource. Quality stuff, usually bought at Menards with their 11% rebate.
May 28, 2024 at 6:04 pm #2274700Knowing how OnX has been a major player in the hunting realm, Good to see them throwing their weight into fishing. At first glance, it seems they are taking a “facts first” approach (which I appreciate).
Thanks for the early access invite!
March 17, 2024 at 7:39 pm #2261541If you describe your hook set style as a “lift,” you likely are not setting hard enough.
If you think about the distance the tip of a 7’ open water moves compared to the distance the tip moves on a 32” ice rod during a hook set, you should realize the need for an exaggerated set motion when ice fishing!
February 14, 2024 at 7:57 am #2253913To date, there’s been no evidence to support this decision.
I too would love to see more timely transparency. For example, the most recent survey data available to the public is nearly 18 months old! Keep in mind, these surveys present raw data…which shouldn’t take more than a few hours to compile into a spreadsheet.

January 19, 2024 at 7:56 am #2248704I’d be fine reducing the statewide walleye daily limit to 4…if the possession limit was increased to 8!!!
The article cites neighboring states and Ontario having a 4 walleye daily limit. I’m pretty sure most of those neighboring states also have a possession limit that is twice the daily.
Seems like a reasonable compromise!!!
October 30, 2023 at 10:42 pm #2233392Browns are better than rainbow for smoking because their meat has a higher fat/oil ratio. Same smoking process just better flavor and texture with browns. Enjoy!

October 12, 2023 at 2:55 pm #2229955I have a 2020 Lund Impact 1875 XS with a Honda 150. A couple things I think warrant mentioning…
1) I’ve reached a WOT speed of 50 MPH (GSP sped over ground). I can’t imagine wanting to go any faster than that in an aluminum boat.
2) The Impact is a relatively light boat for its size and it has a lot of freeboard…this can cause two issues: 1) the wind can get ahold of it pretty easily. As a finesse walleye guy, that can be frustrating. 2) the weight of the 150 engine makes the bow ride rather high…even more so if the rear livewell is full. I put as much ballast as possible in the bow but it is common for my 60” Terrova to come out of the water if I’m trying to spot lock in any wave bigger than 18”. If you plan to fish any sizable lakes, I strongly recommend a 72” trolling motor shaft.
That said, the Impact has been a great “family fishing” boat. Lots of storage and very open layout.
If you take fishing seriously and can swing the cost, I recommend making the jump up to the Pro V model.
July 31, 2023 at 6:40 pm #2216652The Kipawa is a smaller diameter than the WW2. I’m sure this is intentional to compensate for additional resistance incurred by the third blade.
June 1, 2023 at 11:53 am #2206055In my case, my bait was contained in a portable bin (Engle cooler) filled with water from the bait shop. I did not pour my bait into the boat’s live well or supplement it with water from the lake.
As the law is written, does the bait from such a portable cooler need to be disposed of upon exiting the lake?
June 1, 2023 at 11:25 am #2206040On a serious note, the news article linked at the start of this thread states the incident stemmed from a disagreement about “minnow water.”
I happened to have a conversation about “minnow water” with an inspector this weekend (mine was respectful and constructive). The inspector informed me that any live bait residing in water (we had minnows and leeches) can not be transported (much less used) one it has been taken on to a lake. Moreover, bait can not be disposed of by dumping it into a lake.
Now, I have not yet been able to verify the accuracy of his statements; but he seemed to take his job seriously.
If his statements are accurate, then:
1) The use of water-born bait can only be used for one outing (even if the next outing occurs on the same lake).
2) If I can not dispose of water-born bait in the lake…and can not transport it after my outing…shouldn’t the DNR have bait disposal collectors at all public and private launches?May 22, 2023 at 6:25 am #2204041My Helix unit said the surface temp was 64.5 degrees and we were only fishing in 8-10 FOW.
To be clear, the problem was not that the leeches were “balling up.” Instead they were wrapping themselves around the line and jig an in that act effectively tying a knot.
I’ll try the suggestion of double hooking them mid-section next time!
April 19, 2023 at 12:20 pm #2197091Yep, looks like they cover the need to align the steering notch when deploying at 4:45 in this video:
April 19, 2023 at 10:18 am #2197049Jeffery, you might be right. I see the “tooth” you’re talking about (which appears to be spring-loaded and pass through the lift assist). I will definitely make sure that tooth nests in the notch on the collar to see if that resolves the problem!
March 23, 2023 at 3:43 pm #2190801^That is the clearest answer I’ve heard thus far about lithium upgrades. Thank you!
March 20, 2023 at 6:21 pm #2189950@ganderpike, is this a new boat or did you have a different battery setup prior? If so, what was your prior setup?
February 20, 2023 at 12:24 pm #2183005My understanding is the yearly subscription will get all the maps on your mobile device. If you want individual lakes on your GPS unit, you will have to purchase and download to a SD card.
Correct, I don’t see the ability to transfer maps to head units. It costs $25 / year just to view maps only on your phone.
I really wish they’d make it possible to auto-sync waypoints between your phone and head unit. This would make it so much easier to transition from open water to ice fishing!!!!
January 2, 2023 at 10:25 pm #2170827Or just wrap your leader around your reel stem and hook the lure on an eyelet. You can run a 30-40” leader with this method without reeling the swivel into your guides.
December 15, 2022 at 4:53 pm #2166968Do you know the make or model of the rod holder you used for your deadstick? I like how it mounts to the hub.
October 28, 2022 at 1:50 pm #2155503Same type of transition happens to stream rainbow trout, brown trout and brookies. They can reach about 20” by only eating bugs. Reaching a larger size requires more calories (meat) which completely changes their holding patterns and behaviors. It can be a blast fly fishing top water mouse patterns at night in the right conditions!
October 4, 2022 at 1:05 pm #2150369I think the fact Minnesota restricts anglers to just one rod for inland open water is awesome!
September 15, 2022 at 9:11 am #2146858Has anyone built on the MHX NP842 blank?
It seems very similar to the Elliott SJ610ML-XF….but I can’t find any reviews or forum comments about the NP842-MHX.
July 20, 2022 at 11:14 am #2136548I’d like to stay around $150 for the blank. Length range 6’9 – 7’.
