Grabbed this guy on Rum two weeks back – I do not have a boat just casting off shore. First cast on a plain white spinner.

yeah I should I have put this in another spot.

But no definitely didn’t nail the walleye at least. We caught a ton of Pike and a handful of 11-12 inch crappie – still a nice fish fry so I’ll take it.

Word was around there that no one could find the walleye.

Nope I mean lead core rigs. We expect and hope they are down 60-70 feet depending on the current and wind, a little bit of a crap shoot. But that’s how we usually get lucky on a king here and there.

We run the down riggers deep. One 5 feet off the bottom the other 15 (80ft and 100ft). Like I said above though, been hearing a lot about people setting their down riggers closer to 50 – 60 feet.

off the top of my head I would say water temp.

Definitely not an expert, but just to talk fishing this is our approach for lakers on IR: on the south side what we look for – no surprise here – water temp, depth and speed. Above 55 temp if you can, 100-110 depth (set rigs and dipsys on the bottom, let your lead do the 60-70ft), 1.2 – 1.5mph. Clean spoons on everything, no flashers or dodgers for us on Isle Royale. Green/purple combo. Ideal conditions for wind we would look at 1-3 footers, mostly because it allows you to keep your line and speed fairly constant. Our set up is two down riggers, two lead and dipsys. I tell you what, dipsys are probably our most reliable fish puller when we can dial them in to bounce off the bottom a bit.

**I hear a lot of people are setting shallower for suspended lakers, 50-60 feet set, we don’t but if it works it works!

some nice trout right there! yeah we made the Tribune haha, pretty fun.

Earliest we have gone up is honestly July, staying out there you just never know the conditions – we usually make a week or 4 days out of it. But a guy that we have met up there a number of times actually went out I believe last weekend. So 5/13, which I think is pushing it. If you just launch out of Grand Marais or of course Grand Portage and make day trips I would think a June run would be fine if you play the conditions right.

I’ve never done the Stannard Rock bit, definitely on the radar though. I have seen some crazy fish caught out there.

Crazy I just stumbled across this thread here – been watching IDO for years. I was actually up at Isle Royale with my dad the same week you were. Fishing the south side out of Washington Harbor. Thought I would share our fish (47in 45lbs). Been going to Isle Royale every other year now for the past decade, each time is great but this past year’s fishing was phenomenal. Got lucky on a few kings out of Rock Harbor as well. Not quite as big as that king a few posts up though.
