Looks like a box elder tree? compare the mushroom with Hypsizygus ulmarius (Elm Oyster) which is a pretty common find this time of year. Chicken of the Woods is an orange/yellow shelf mushroom with pores, not gills.
I’m not good at tree identification either…
September 14, 2017 at 11:39 am #1715207You’re right, I think a few years ago I found one like this and someone said it was most likely an oyster mushroom and I thought they were the same thing, obviously not…
April 6, 2017 at 6:57 pm #1686942and just for s&g’s I did email the Oversight Committee, I will keep you posted!
lol, same here…we can compare notes…
April 6, 2017 at 6:48 pm #1686939I’ve read it and this time I included the email for commenting to them directly. Didn’t know if you read the whole thread.
Members are appointed to three-year terms through an open application process and limited to two consecutive terms. I don’t think this means that the Commissioner appoints every member.
BigWerm, it was a pleasure. We may have differing opinion on some things but I think you have a lot of good points and reason well.
Good luck fishing this year
April 6, 2017 at 5:27 pm #1686920We are to blame for following the regulations the DNR laid out???
We are partly to blame for the state of the lake. Harvest and mortality is a factor here.
I never said Mille lacs is the only lake, nor walleye the only fish.
Your argument not to increase the fee was based on Mille lacs. That’s all I had to go by and the reason for my question. The biggest argument on this whole thread is “The DNR sucks, look at Mille Lacs.” (and some AIS sprinkled in there) It’s not the entire story. At least you admit the DNR can do some things right.
DNR is doing VERY well, but imo there is a ton of waste, inefficiencies, and high profile poor management by them as well.
You seem well educated on the running of the DNR, you should look into the Citizen Oversight Committee and lay out all of the waste, inefficiencies, and high profile poor management.
Here’s their email: [email protected]
April 6, 2017 at 4:55 pm #1686915So let me get your logic right here Otto. The DNR shouldn’t be blamed for the status of one of our premier fisheries.
Plenty of blame to go all around on that one including ourselves. The way it’s laid out, I don’t know if the situation is solvable.
I think the best way to solve it would be to shut it down and let the lake fix itself. No native wants that, no fisherman wants that, no resort owner wants that.
Also, Mille Lacs is not the only lake in this state and Walleye is not the only fish.
The DNR is really under the direction of many other forces that prevent them from doing their job correctly. Despite this we need to give them more money to not accomplish their goals. The statism is strong in you!
Not every piece of water has this kind of socio/political situation. They shouldn’t be judged solely on Mille Lacs. Do you think everything they do is wrong? We all have our beefs but come on!
I think not giving them the fee increase will hurt the areas you wouldn’t want to harm. The DNR employees I have met are all good people with the best interests of our state in mind.
April 6, 2017 at 4:27 pm #1686906But the DNR has dropped the ball when they are catering to the Natives still being able to harvest fish with their nets
I guess I am slow.
So now it’s not about the nets but proper slot limits. So, if they have proper slot limits, they are no longer catering to the natives?
You talk out of both sides of your mouth and it doesn’t surprise me one bit that your logic is coming from bar talk.
April 6, 2017 at 4:03 pm #1686895See, you’re blaming the nets. Definitely the DNR’s fault that’s happening. They have 100% control over that. They could stop that today.
April 6, 2017 at 3:27 pm #1686881I’d also like to know what the DNR is currently doing to screw up Red, Winny, Leech, Rainy, The Rivers etc. They should be doing the same things up there too, right?
That 10 year Grouse cycle is also part of their master plans.
Still waiting on your Mille Lacs solution and the DNR’s end game, Rooster.
April 6, 2017 at 2:50 pm #1686867I guess you’re right. The DNR acted alone.
What’s your solution to Mille Lacs?
April 6, 2017 at 12:49 pm #1686831…I guess I should have said “that cannot be debated w/ me…”. Go ahead and have your beliefs on the situation. That’s fine. But I will always say that the DNR over see’s everyone of your thoughts above. Every one of them…RR
What exactly do you think their end game is?
– Great additions Grouse. –
April 6, 2017 at 11:57 am #1686813On ML’s it’s the DNR and that cannot be debated…RR
I’ll debate you. On Mille Lacs it is at a minimum what I posted prior.
– Tribes
– Resorts/Businesses
– Fishermen
– Social/Political ForcesThe DNR has to do a balancing act between all these forces and probably more. They are definitely not running that $#!T show.
If the DNR had their way they would probably shut it down like Red but nobody will support that.
And in regards to Ag/Insurance, I have heard a lot of people blame the deer control strategy, mostly in WI on Insurance Companies. And I suppose the Ag industry would like less deer eating their crops. Not to mention their influence on water quality.
April 5, 2017 at 11:11 am #1686599I wouldn’t mind the increase but the DNR has screwed up so bad for the fishing in this state it’s pathetic. Personally give mille lacs back to the tribe and we can buy tribe stamps like they do SD for fishing.
SD does that? I’ve always thought that would be a good idea but I also see a lot of guys wouldn’t do it on principle.
Mille Lacs is a political, social, economic and ecological mess. I’m glad I don’t have to lead that effort.
If the DNR wasn’t pulled in all of those directions the solution would be much easier. People act as if the DNR can do whatever they want. They can’t.
April 4, 2017 at 10:48 pm #1686529Sounds like some of you should be on the Citizen Oversight Committee:

The increases will go through, as certain as death and more taxes.Protect yourself from future increases by checking into the lifetime license.

and I did.As the above do, please do support the fee increase.
BK- When I look for a lifetime fishing license I can’t seem to find it on the website? I have checked this year and 3 years ago as well. Any ideas?
December 22, 2016 at 6:42 pm #1659158With what they have available now, I would get the Helix 12 G2. Waiting to see if there’s an Onix update too. It’s has the most new features at the moment.
October 28, 2016 at 4:57 pm #1647714bass pictures are so tough. To get any fish to look as big as it really is, you need to hold it out (or have a kid hold it). Bass pictures rarely do the fish justice unless held out.
Even bass mounts don’t do the fish justice. I’ve seen some 10# fish on the wall thinking they were maybe 5 or 6 until you get right up next to them…
October 28, 2016 at 4:48 pm #1647712I have a 10 year old Strikmaster 9″ rebuilt the carb once and never have any problems, always starts and drills holes like butter. Do not know what people are doing that they hate there gas augers but I am 100% in love with mine.
I had to rebuild mine every year until I found out about using non-ethonal gas. Mine can still be tough to start the first use but with normal use, it’s pretty good.
September 12, 2016 at 3:46 pm #1639107September 12, 2016 at 3:44 pm #1639105I think if you tried a Curado/Citica or Lews with the centrifugal brakes you would see a big improvement in casting distance. The only magnetic brakes that I have really liked are on higher end Daiwas.
September 12, 2016 at 11:36 am #1639031I have a 1.5″ mount for my HDS-8 and it will hold it but if I wanted something rock solid I would go up to the 2.25″ mount. I have that one for my HDS-10.
September 6, 2016 at 10:14 pm #1638011and they cut their all pro offensive lineman. They don’t stand a chance now…
And just think, in 6 years or so they’ll have to start looking for their third hall of fame QB in a row.
Poor guys…
September 6, 2016 at 1:33 pm #1637896Have to say this puts a new spin on week 2 and the first reg season home game vs the Pack.
If the pACKers could just catch a break.
I mean, first they had to prepare for an old career backup QB, now they have to prepare for a 1st round bust that has had a whole two weeks to learn the offense.
What next?
