Here is the solution that I have found. Take the remote apart and spray the circuit board thoroughly on both sides and around the LED with DetoxIT. Carefully pat it dry. I also gently tightened the battery contacts by bending the sides in and lifting the bottom up slightly. This fixed it for me. I suspect that condensation may be causing some internal corrosion that the DetoxIT spray eliminates.
