Congrats on the your new PB! Thanks for posting the video.

Thanks man. It was fun seeing that fish come through an 8″ ice hole! Although a bit nerve wracking when it got pinned in the hole lol.

Really enjoyed this video because it wasn’t just reeling in fish after fish of the same species. You really showed what it’s like to experience the river for a couple days.

My one point of advice: Time for some new microphones with proper windscreens.

    Good work!

I agree. I do need to invest in a microphone! I just use the audio from the GoPro audio which leaves a lot to be desired and is susceptible to wind, muffling, audio spikes, etc.

Cool video. So at one point it looked like you where going into Close slough. Did you guys make it through there? The video then jumped to what looked like the channel into Peasley lake.

We tried to get into both the Slough and Peasley lake but the water was too far down. The Ranger told us that the week before we went she made it back into the Slough but the water dropped significantly in a week’s time and kept us from getting back there. Next time!

Looks like a fun trip. Nice job on the video and editing. How were the bugs at the camp site? I know a few guys that swear by those hammocks. Not sure how I would handle them? Like to roll over a lot.

The mosquito’s were pretty bad but we were both expecting them to be a little worse. You certainly had to re-apply the bug spray every 30-45 mins or so. A little wind cutting through the campsite helped, so did the campfire smoke. I am a stomach sleeper myself but have had no issue sleeping in those hammocks – granted I have only done it like 4-5 times though.

That is a really pretty fish – very nicely colored/marked!!

    Thanks for sharing.

Thanks man! I was surprised at how dark the fish was and in contrast how light it’s markings were. I don’t catch many Pike out of stained water so maybe that’s the norm?

For those that don’t want to watch the fishing video – I was surprised to hook into my Personal Best Pike at 38″ (beating my previous by 5″) and Fat while fishing the shores for Walleye Opener Weekend. Attached is a picture of the fish. I hope everyone has been having a good Open Water season so far.

That’s some crazy crappie fishing there. That would be a blast on open water. How deep was it there?

We fished 2 spots for Crappies up there during this trip and they were both 29-31fow. I just uploaded the final video from this trip.

I’m definitely going back to NW Angle next winter. Watching those 12″-14″ slab <strong class=”ido-tag-strong”>crappies come out of the hole made the trip.
The <strong class=”ido-tag-strong”>walleyes were good too…nice eaters but we didn’t hit any big ones.
I’ve been on LOTW open water 3-4 times but never in the Angle. That is now on my list too.
Found that dead stick rod holder on line and ordered it!

I hear ya! Awesome man! I think you will like it.

Nice video Mitch. I watched Day 1 and Day 2. Will look for day 3.
We were just up there mid January and went out of Sunset Lodge. Day 1 we fished in the US side for walleyes and Day 2 on Canada side for crappies. Those crappies in that area are huge. We caught several that went 14″-14 1/2″ and don’t think there were any under 11″. It’s an amazing fishery.

How much money were you paid to babysit Kook?

All the Labatt’s a guy could drink… haha

I’m soo happy you enjoyed your stay at Flag Island Resort and in Tanonka! We love Flag Island so much we built that cabin so we could come up as often as we wanted. Great video. Waiting for the next one!!!

That’s awesome! It is is special place. I need to get up there this summer sometime!

They used to make prime rib once per stay (they still may?) and I’m not sure if it was because I hungrier than Paul Bunyan, or if it was actually as good as I thought…but it was the best prime rib I’ve ever had.

Oooh that does sound good! Chuck was bummed that he wasn’t able to smoke his ribs that week due to all the snow and cold temps. Sounds like he makes them usually once a week and people come from all around to buy them that day.

Never stayed there in the winter, but their operation in the summer is top notch, can’t imagine it’s any different when the thermometer drops. Great people, awesome food and good accommodations.

This was my first time up there but now I’m itching to get back during the open water season! The food really surprised me, everything we tried the 4 nights we were up there was good. There was so many ingredients and items made in house. Not always the case at Fishing Resorts.

Super nice folks. I went to nursing school with their daughter Breanna. I heard about this place for years. I need to make it up there!

Small world! We were able to get to know Breanna a little bit during our stay. Such a nice family!

Great Fishery, I’ve only fished it open water. Would love to get up there to ice some of those jumbo perch.

They seem to be making a rebound on the East end. We have been catching more of them the last 3 years. 5 or 6 years ago we only seemed to catch small ones. Might be location but to me the Perch population seems to be rebounding.

My inlaws cabin is on Big Bay so we primarily fish the Eastern Side open water and ice. I’d like to get over to the West more but it’s a little bit of a hike and there’s so much to fish/check out on the East.

Awesome, I hope you and your family get into some fish! I’m trying to figure out a way to get out on the hard water over this holiday season with all the family plans and get togethers. There are a ton of lakes in that area! That’s about an hour drive or so from me so I’ve actually been looking online at some lakes in that area that I’d like to get out and try this winter.

I will use small spoons on my Bullwhip and it handles them well but I mostly use Tungsten jigs up to 5mm for that rod and my applications. I purchased a Fusion last season for small to medium spoon fishing. It doesn’t have as soft of a tip as the BW but fishes and load ups nicely.

Thats a good reminder, its mostly a habit. I need to have it on during transport in tournaments but I usually keep it off when fishing and moving on the lake. Its lightweight so I’m always careful when setting it on the ice but you can never be too careful.

Nice job… always fun seeing a nice little crappie video out of a kayak

Thanks man! It was a fun outing indeed. Hoping to get out again and target them before they push into their Summer haunts.

Is anyone still out fishing on metro lakes or is hard water mostly done?

I got out this weekend. Some of the shoreline accesses are getting dicey but once you’re on there is still 2 feet of ice. Actually had a full size truck pull up to me in the NE Metro last Friday…no idea where they accessed from but I was surprised they didn’t go through on the shoreline.

I think you’re going to be able to panfish on the ice for a few more weeks Mitch…..

I think you’re right!!! I wasn’t sure what I’d come home to but I came home to relatively cold temps and snow! lol

Thats funny you bring up the allergy. I always suspected it had something to do with fishing but I too get reactions to something. More so in winter, perch primarily and it takes a few days of contact. Left hand is the worst (handling hand), itches then palm and between fingers will peel.
I think I will have to study this more with field testing.

I basically confirmed it when I moved to Colorado for a few years. Trout slime doesn’t affect me so my hands were always good there. Then I’d come home to MN for short trips in the Summer/Winter and do some fishing. By the end of my trip or when I got back to CO my hands would start the familiar peeling. Now I only notice it on the rare month that I don’t do any fishing, my hands will be in good shape.

Makes sense then! A fellow fish addict who’s allergic to fish. O the irony! haha Keep up the good work bud!

Do you have a fish allergy as well Matt? The irony is definitely thick considering how much we love to fish!

Skin allergy to fish slime. Doesn’t happen with Saltwater or Trout but everything else – after like 5 days of touching fish slime my skin will get a bubble, that bubble will grow and then peel. It’s not painful but more so annoying and looks bad. The latex gloves help slow that in the winter time, I don’t wear them open water but it’s easy in the winter so I put them on.

Great video. Gotta love the chase!

That’s what it’s all about! I have fished a handful of brand new lakes to me this year and I’d say the majority haven’t paid off or lived up to expectation but outings like this keep me in search mode.

I won one in a raffle at an Ice Fishing tournament the year they came out. I use it a few times a year but not sure it’s worth the price tag. I haven’t tried it much on Panfish but it works well on Walleye. Usually it’s a 2man operation where one person cuts the fillet straight off the fish (including ribs), then the SkinzIt will take the rib bones and skin off. You definitely save meat but not sure it justifies the price tag.

Great video! The guide was outstanding.

He definitely knew his stuff! He was originally from the East Coast so he was pretty blunt at times if you missed your mark on the cast to a bedding fish or did something wrong but recognized that early on and we didn’t take offense. He meant well and wanted you to catch every big fish we saw.

    Looks like a great time!

The boy and myself will be down there in a little over a week.

Nice!! Where in Florida are you headed? At the end of March my Wife and I are going to Marco Island for a week of relaxing (and fishing woot ).
