I was wondering more about above the dam at Alma. Is the Marina landing open?
December 21, 2009 at 2:09 am #72934my I40’s work great to around -5 to -10 degrees, batteries will still last for weeks at temps near 0. Not sure about the other moultrie cams though.
December 11, 2008 at 1:52 am #45302Thanks for the advice guys, I understand that a good buffalo co. lease will be pricey, but usually worth it. Ive knocked on a few doors here and there and I just dont feel right walking up to someone as a complete stranger, and I’m sure they feel the same. I like to drop names of neighbors as a reference if I do go knocking. Again, for myself I’d be happy finding a smaller piece of land that has good potential and in a area that doesnt get pounded, and maybe be allowed to plant a food plot. Up until 3 yrs ago I only hunted on my aunt and uncles 5 acres, unless I was invited to go elsewhere, so anything could be an upgrade from what I’ve been hunting, I never even saw a shooter buck this year, and can probably count on one hand the number of 130″+ deer Ive had encounters with in my life while hunting. I cant believe how awesome it would be to see a half dozen shooters in one sit like some guys experience, maybe some day.
December 4, 2008 at 1:19 am #44786Ive wondered about this also, but last year I loaded mine the first day of ML season, never did see a deer to shoot at until the last day, so it was loaded for 10 days and seemed to shoot just fine, I shot the deer at about 90 yards. I had kept the gun in my truck the whole time. I still use the granular powder, not the pellets, not sure if it makes a difference.
December 3, 2008 at 7:20 pm #44764I hunt between eau claire and mondovi, which is EAB, I put a ton of hours in a treestand this year and saw a handfull of small bucks and maybe 6 or 8 does all season, compared to the last couple years where I saw at least 20 different bucks and probably 35-40 does. One property I hunt I only saw 5 different deer total all of bow and gun season, 2 were does. Oddly enough one of my spots accross the highway not in EAB the only 2 times I hunted I saw over 20 does.
December 2, 2008 at 11:54 pm #44669This was on our local news here in Eau Claire, and my fiance’s dad talked to one of the hunters in the group earlier in the season. The group hunts mostly public land, they go from spot to spot and do drives, nothing wrong with that as far as I am concerned.
December 1, 2008 at 1:46 am #44453I hunted 7 of the 9 days, saw 6 deer, a 3 pointer and the rest does and fawns, 3 of the deer were run off by the neighbors while I was watching them. By far the worst gun season Ive had in my 14 yrs of hunting.
November 25, 2008 at 2:08 pm #44094Must be nice. If I remember correctly Mark Drury’s daughter’s first buck was a 160″ class. They have it pretty good I’d say.
November 21, 2008 at 7:40 pm #43870I just went to farm and fleet and they dont have much left at all, just the mini’s. I might have to pay the scheels premium to get some of the bigger body warmers.
November 18, 2008 at 2:53 am #43299until I saw where your from I thought for sure you were talking about the neighbor where I hunt. Opening weekend in sept he is banging horns together like crazy and one evening he climbed in the stand about a hour before dark and used his buck roar til dark…
November 14, 2008 at 11:20 pm #43045I havent seen much movement at all compared to previous years, Ive hunted for 15 days in a row now and Ive seen 5 little bucks, some were following does grunting but I havent seen any hard chasing, I’m not seeing much for deer period. Last year at this point I’d seen well over a dozen bucks and the rut seemed to be winding down about this time then. My best stand where I saw 10 bucks over 3 days last year I have seen 2 bucks this year in about a half dozen sits. I dont know what the deal is.
April 1, 2008 at 5:28 pm #35367Ive found 12 so far this year, 11 are freshies, some have been there a while they were pretty white, hard to believe some are still holding on. I found a dandy set last week that had blood on one of the bases so it was a recent drop.
March 6, 2008 at 2:29 am #34860NO, I wish this deer lived where I hunt. I found that one near my house in the city, I live near a couple hundred acres of woods that is in the city limits so no hunting allowed. The neighbors have been seeing a bigger one around so I hope to find those sheds when the snow starts melting.
January 19, 2008 at 6:36 pm #7023Thats funny, reminds me of a story a guy told to one of the other guys where I used to work. Apparently this guy shot a deer and it just stood there so the guy jumped on its back and rode it down the hill like a rodeo cowboy.
December 13, 2007 at 3:11 am #7504I agree 100% with gobbler, I feel more confident hunting my 30 acre chunk that I have to myself than the 300+ acres that there may be a couple others hunting. just because it has limited stand sites and I dont second guess where I should be. Although, Having trail cams at each property helps me decide where I should spend most of my time. This year should have paid off on that 30 acres but I blew my shot at a 150 class 10 point just before gun season
To answer the original question, the place where I hunt now I know the lady through my moms work, she only owned a few acres, so I asked her neighbor who has a small farm (32 acres) if I could hunt, turns out he likes to eat venison but doesnt hunt, so I shoot him a deer or 2 each year in exchange for letting me hunt, good deal eh?
So far I have not gone knocking on doors, I just happen to know people through work or school that have land, I havent stumbled across any land I would consider prime, but the chance at a nice buck is definatly possible.
September 26, 2007 at 2:18 am #611120I have caught a few SM in the 20″ range in the past years, only a handfull of 19″s this year though. I pretty much stick to the main lake and chippewa river sections. Ive caught them all times of the year on several different baits, jigs, tubes, jerkbaits, grubs, etc, and depths ranging from 1 to 15 feet, just depends on the day…
April 9, 2007 at 2:24 am #521413Mr Marble Eye,
Check over at Scheels, got 8′ worth of bfishn, should have what your looking for.March 28, 2007 at 1:05 am #554116I wish I would have had my camera yesterday, first bass of the year a nice 4+ lb smalljaw.
March 27, 2007 at 2:41 am #553707do you have the white chevy? I was out for a couple hours also, only had 2 bites, but one was a solid 4 1/2 lb smallie. Lots of ice floating down the main channel made it interesting running.
March 26, 2007 at 12:56 am #553214My 18′ champion is small compared to most that fish the same tournaments I do, seems like the majority is 19-20 footers with 200-225’s. But, for me my boat is more than adequate and the last time I checked my boat doesnt reel in the fish. Sometimes it’s nice to have a smaller boat, especially on the river
March 23, 2007 at 4:47 am #552377did you venture off the main channel on 5? What areas were opened up?
March 22, 2007 at 10:09 pm #552192I was talking about the part of beef slough just south of big lake, on the west side of the tracks. I just heard that the first tow went through alma last night, any word if it broke through pepin yet?
March 22, 2007 at 12:04 am #551740Anybody know anything on pools 4 or 5 yet? what about the big lake area and beef slough? Also peterson and robinson lakes? How long before the alma marina opens up?
May 19, 2006 at 12:56 am #447533So, I wonder how many bass boats will be in the tournament, considering most people who own one are advocates of C&R.
